It didn’t take long for The Donald to get booed. And booed heavily. The first question out of the gate showed Trump to be who he is…. a political opportunist out for himself. The candidates were asked to raise their hand if they would not pledge their support to whoever the Republican nominee turns out to be. Trump’s hand was the only one raised.
Trump would only disavow a third party candidacy if the Republican nominee is, well, Trump!
Trump did not help himself with the female vote when he wouldn’t apologize for the way he has referred to (disparaged) women in the past. To make matters worse, he dissed Megyn Kelly who asked him the question!
Will any of this diminish Trump’s support? Probably not. There is a certain core of conservative Republican voters who will stick with the man no matter what. The problem is Trump needed to increase his support. He failed miserably.
Which candidates helped their cause? The consensus seems to be they all fairly held their own. Many analysts believed Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Mike Huckabee did well enough to see a bump in their poll numbers.
John Kasich came across as the most “moderate” candidate when he spoke of his support for gay rights. How badly this will hurt him remains to be seen.
Stay tuned.
