GOP In Turmoil – Dissension Among The Cranks

October 31, 2015 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

pirate600

All hell has broken loose between the Republican presidential campaigns and the Republican National Committee (RNC). A mutiny is afoot! It appears after this week’s presidential debate hosted by CNBC – a disorganized disaster widely panned by political observers – the candidates want to take control of the debate process going forward.

To a man (and woman), each candidate complained about the tough questions they were asked and the apparent bias of the CNBC moderators.

Sparked by Iowa front-runner Ben Carson and second-tier candidate, Bobby Jindal, a meeting will take place this Sunday in Washington D.C. among representatives of the various campaigns. Think “The Godfather” and the meeting of the “Five Families.” Most, if not all, campaigns will be represented at the meeting.

It appears there will be one notable player missing from the Sunday meeting, RNC chairman Reince Priebus. The campaign reps want to be left alone to plot how they will alter the party’s debate process without the entity responsible for scheduling and co-sponsoring each of the officially sanctioned debates!

So it will be the cranky children conducting their own meeting without any adult supervision.

Good luck with that!

While all the candidates may not like how some of the debates have been conducted so far, each campaign will come to the big meeting with it’s own set of wants and gripes. Some candidates have complained about unequal speaking time. Others have griped about how polling is used to determine who qualifies for the prime-time and undercard debates. Some have insisted on opening and closing statements.

You thought the last debate was a free-for-all?

There is one simple way to make the debates better and more meaningful. No, it is not to take Ted Cruz” suggestion of having the next debate moderated by Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. It is for the top-tier candidates to tell the wannabes within their ranks to exit stage door right, pronto … for the good of the party, of course. But that sensible idea might not go over well with New Jersey’s favorite bully,  Gov. Chris Christie. “If some unlucky accident were to befall Gov. Christie,” said campaign manager Luca Brasi, ” I am going to blame some people at that meeting.”

Facts? Lies? … No Problem With Republican Voters

October 30, 2015 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

megyn_kelly4

I occasionally will watch Fox News. You know, to see how the Republican propaganda machine will spin the day’s news (OK, I like to gaze upon Fox’s foxy Megyn Kelly!).

Last night Megyn had a group of about 25-30 Republican voters she quizzed on their take of the third Republican presidential debate. The most interesting segment of her show came towards the end when she discussed a few of the “untruths” spouted by some of the candidates.

Marco Rubio was asked about his poor handling of his personal finances:

MODERATOR: Senator Rubio, you yourself have said that you’ve had issues. You have a lack of bookkeeping skills. You accidentally inter-mingled campaign money with your personal money. You faced foreclosure on a second home that you bought. And just last year, you liquidated a $68,000 retirement fund. That’s something that cost you thousands of dollars in taxes and penalties. In terms of all of that, it raises the question whether you have the maturity and wisdom to lead this $17 trillion economy. What do you say?

RUBIO: Well, you just – you just listed a litany of discredited attacks from Democrats and my political opponents, and I’m not gonna waste 60 seconds detailing them all.

Megyn told her panel, after some fact checking, it was determined that everything the moderator said about Rubio’s poor financial acumen was true.

So not only is Rubio a poor manager of his personal finances … he’s a bald-faced liar!

Megyn then asked her Republican panel members if any of this mattered to them. I believe two people raised their hands.

News outlets have a field day fact checking statements made by politicians after debates. It is very clear that facts, or lies, do not matter so much to your average Republican voter. How else could one explain the level of support for Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson (or the entire Republican field for that matter!).

Donald Trump Defended By Fellow Republicans

October 29, 2015 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

donald_trump_is_a_clown___add_your_own_caption__by_veggie1232-d51vd2aaaaa

It was just a matter of time. CNBC moderator John Harwood, at last night’s Republican presidential debate, asked Donald Trump the $64,000 question. “Mr. Trump,” asked the fearless journalist, “just what makes you think a clown like you should be running for president of the United States?”

The question stunned the Republican presidential front-runner but he soon gained his bearings. “John that is such a ridiculous question. I’m not going to answer it. It’s degrading, demeaning, insulting, biased,” said the billionaire candidate. “I mean, really? This is the first question the liberal media wants to ask me?”

Sensing an opportunity, Jeb Bush seemingly came to Trump’s defense. “John,” said Bush,” you know full well Donald meets all the qualifications required to run for president. Just where in the constitution does it say a buffoon can’t seek the presidency? You and your network should be ashamed of yourselves.”

It was at that point Texas Sen. Ted Cruz decided to join in on the media bashing. “How about talking about the substantive issues?” Cruz asked. “Nobody believes the moderator will vote in the Republican primary. It shouldn’t be about tearing into each other.”

Not to be outdone, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio launched his own assault on the “mainstream media.” Citing Hillary Clinton’s performance before the House Benghazi panel last week, Rubio said, “She has her super PAC helping her out,” referring to the media’s positive coverage of her performance.

Realizing he needed to start throwing his weight around, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie jumped on the bandwagon. Christie smartly seized his moment to express his disdain for the debate moderators when  a question was asked about the legality of online fantasy football. ““We have ISIS and al Qaeda attacking us,” asked a combative Christie,  “and we’re talking about fantasy football?”

With all the outrage expressed at the media by his fellow Republican candidates, Trump never did answer Harwood’s question.

Republican National Committee chairman, Reince Priebus, offered his own criticism following the debate. “The performance by the CNBC moderators was extremely disappointing and did a disservice to their network, our candidates, and voters.”

An anonymous source from within the RNC later revealed an embarrassing truth … it was Reince Priebus himself who cajoled Harwood to ask Trump the clown question. The Republican establishment can abide almost any “wacko bird” as their 2016 standard bearer … but not a clown.

Republican Debate … Big Government Bad, Elect Me!

October 28, 2015 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

ap_575169401118_wide-16a2d78005bf93d5ba473ee100d1b20fd8d65d78-s800-c85

It appears that in preparation for tonight’s third Republican presidential debate, each candidate read from the Ronald Reagan play book: if you want to score points, attack the government. If you remember, Saint Reagan famously said, “Government is not the solution to our problem, government IS the problem.”

Geez! Why would any of those ten Republican candidates want to be the head of our big bad government? To make it less effective? To shut it down? To kill it from the inside? To shrink it in size so it “can be drowned in a bathtub?”

This whole “government is bad” meme is getting old. But the political consultants must believe it’s a winner with Republican voters. Frankly, I would have more respect for any candidate who openly said he or she just wants to privatize all government functions except for providing a national defense.

Of course the American voter is upset with their government’s performance over the last eight years. Republicans have done everything within their power during Obama’s presidency to gum up the works of government; to make it dysfunctional, thereby proving big bad government is worthless.

Did any individual candidate stand out? I don’t think so but look for supporters of each candidate to claim their guy (or gal) smoked the field.

Tonight’s debate was a big moment for the presidential hopes of Jeb Bush; perhaps more so than anyone else on the debate stage. I do not believe he helped his cause one bit.

I do not know which candidate “won” the debate but I can tell you who was the loser: the American public. As Mike Huckabee observed at the end of the debate, “This is just a big game, and we’re the players.”

The GOP Battle Of The Brands

October 28, 2015 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush listens to a question from the audience during a town hall meeting campaign stop at the Medallion Opera House in Gorham, New Hampshire July 23, 2015. REUTERS/Brian Snyder TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY - RTX1LKI3

At a Houston gathering earlier this week, attended by Jeb Bush’s richest donors, the Bush brain trust huddled together to salvage the Bush family name and Jeb’s flagging presidential hopes. As has become clear to everyone in the Bush camp, Jeb, as a political candidate, is just not meeting the expectations of the Bush brand.

Both former presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, attended the pow-wow organized to help breath life into Jeb’s once thriving presidential bid. But what all the Bushes and mega donors do not seem to understand… the brand is toxic. No amount of money spent on advertising will make a skunk smell like a rose.

What is so odd about trying to resuscitate the Bush brand is that at the start of his campaign, Jeb did all he could to run away from the family name. But that wise strategy didn’t last long. Before you could blink an eye, Jeb was praising his brother W. for his service as president, especially on his foreign policy. Not only did he claim on a debate stage that W. “kept us safe,” but also later doubled and tripled down on the absurd comment.

The Bush brand has come to be associated with the 9/11 attack, the Iraq invasion, Hurricane Katrina and the largest financial meltdown since the Great Depression. While it is true voters have a short memory, all the slick ads in the world will not dispel the disastrous associations with the Bush name.

On the other end of the Republican presidential spectrum, you have the front-runner, Donald Trump, and his own ubiquitous brand. But unlike the negative connotations of the Bush brand, the Trump name is associated with success, excitement, sincerity and being a winner. It is easy to see why Republican voters are shunning the Bush brand for that of Trump’s.

The candidate that once talked about being “his own man” has now fully embraced the family brand. Why Jeb and the campaign intelligentsia have done such a complete reversal from the original, sound campaign strategy is a mystery to all. It seems like a sign of desperation; a Hail Mary pass. It is abundantly clear to all but the group gathered in Houston that Jeb will not secure the Republican presidential nomination as long as he is wearing the same brand as one of the worst presidents in modern history … the Bush brand.

The Envelope, Please. And The Nominee Is….

October 27, 2015 By John DeProspo 8 Comments

Below is the most recent compilation of all the national Republican presidential polls, as tracked by HuffPost. Donald Trump is comfortably in first place, followed by Ben Carson. As has been the case for months, Trump and Carson, both non-politicians, are the only two candidates in double figures.

The establishment favorite, Jeb Bush, is in third place but at a dismal 7.3%.

poll

If we agree that none of those candidates polling under 5% have any real shot at becoming the GOP’s nominee, that leaves us with only five candidates: Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.

Under this very likely scenario, the Republican presidential pick will emerge from among this group of five. But who will end up with the prize? Let’s look at the candidates more closely to see if we can predict the eventual champ.

Donald Trump – The celebrity billionaire who came from out of nowhere to rock the Republican establishment is still luxuriating in his fifteen minutes of fame. The man has a loyal, solid backing that will stay with him no matter what stupid things he says or does (some may say that is the basis for his appeal). While his poll numbers are tanking in Iowa, he is still the establishment’s worst nightmare. Will the Party allow this outsider to come out on top? Not if they have any say. They will do everything in their power to dethrone the Donald.

Ben Carson – When you listen to what the affable retired neurosurgeon says, it is clear the man is less politically sophisticated than even Trump. His main support comes from the religious right. But while he may be a hit with Iowa Evangelicals, that won’t be enough to secure the nomination for the fundamentalist doctor.

Jeb Bush – The man with all that early establishment support, and money, is turning out to be a dud. Much of this is due to the fact that he is a terrible campaigner. But the primary reason why his poll numbers have languished in the basement for so long is obvious … he’s a Bush. Most Republican voters have made it clear they do not want another Bush in the White House. Still, I would not give up on Jeb just yet. He is, after all, the man the Party wants and, if history is any guide, they usually get their way. But this time around, it doesn’t feel like “business as usual.” It is somewhat ironical Jeb is seen as “too moderate” for today’s Republican base.

Marco Rubio – The young Senator from Florida is still a little too wet behind the ears for a serious run at the nomination. He is a Washington insider trying to sell himself as an outsider. No matter how much he tries to distance himself from the Beltway, it won’t work. We’ve reached a moment when anti-establishment is in.

Ted Cruz – No one in the media seems to be talking about Cruz’ chances much. Perhaps the most far right candidate in the group, Tea Bagger types hold him in high esteem. He is an effective speaker and knows how to stir up a crowd. Grassroots Republicans just love him. In favorability polls, Cruz always finishes near the top. He is a sitting Senator but his supporters think of him as an outsider. Cruz’s ideology fits in well with where the Republican Party is today. In addition, he is well-liked by Evangelicals. Yes, the adults in the Party hate him. But if it’s either Trump or Carson, look for the Party establishment to “hold its nose” and strike a deal with the renegade Cruz.

I hate to admit this, but right now my pick would be for Cruz to secure the nomination, as ridiculous as that may sound.

The Appeal Of The Good Dr. Carson

October 26, 2015 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

ap_ben_carson_debate_jc_150819_16x9_992

The latest polling of likely Iowa GOP caucus-goers shows presidential candidate, Ben Carson, leading the national front-runner, Donald Trump, for the first time. What could explain the appeal of this black man in an enclave (99%) of white conservative Republicans? My theory for his success is based on three factors:

1.The man is deeply religious.

Dr. Ben Carson is as fundamentalist a Christian as you’ll find. He is a Seventh-day Adventist; a sect that shares many similarities with Evangelicalism. This helps to explain the significant support he is getting from the large, Evangelical Republican base. (The Appeal Of “Mr. Excitement”)

The doctor is a staunch creationist who has labeled evolution “a myth,” the Big Bang theory “a fallacy” and the fossil record “dubious.” He has admitted God, by giving him a tap on the shoulder, directed he run for the presidency.

2. The man is your basic Uncle Tom.

Like fellow Republican Clarence Thomas, Carson is a man who benefited from social programs engineered by Democrats yet now despises those very programs. Conservatives just love this! There has never been an Uncle Tom they didn’t like. They delight when a black man, such as the successful Dr. Carson, criticizes Democrat-voting blacks as “slaves” on a plantation, too simple-minded to warrant freedom.

Ben Carson and his ilk, whose success and opportunities have come in large measure from standing on the shoulders of those selfless ancestors who sacrificed so much for future generations of blacks, are the classic examples of Uncle Toms.

3. The man is appealing to white racists.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but it does explain part of Carson’s appeal among some white Republicans. Because their hatred for Barack Obama opened them up to the charge of racism, some white Carson supporters take comfort in the fact that they can support this black man. The thinking goes like this, “I’m not a racist. I can support a black man. I just can’t support a black-Kenyan-Muslim-communist like Obama.”

The soft-spoken retired neurosurgeon seems like a nice man. But the more you listen to what he says and actually believes, you see just another run-of-the-mill , self-hating black Republican extremist.

Marsha And The Batty Bunch

October 25, 2015 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-CA) speaks during BP's Cheif Executive, Tony Hayward's, hearing. June 17, 2010.

Here we go again! House Speaker John Boehner has announced the formation of another House Select Committee.  This one will “focus on the grisly practices of big abortion providers,” (wink, wink, Planned Parenthood). You have to hand it to House Republicans; they sure know how to waste time and money.

Pandering to their base through the use of taxpayer money, House Republicans are setting themselves up for another debacle akin to their Benghazi probe. It appears Jindal’s “party of stupid” just doesn’t learn. (The Party Of Stupid Just Can’t Help Itself)

Having had three other House committees investigate “abortion providers,” Boehner explained, “At my request, three House committees have been investigating the abortion business, but we still don’t have the full truth.” You have to give Boehner some credit. This new Select Committee was setup after only three prior investigations, unlike the Benghazi Select Committee that was setup after seven prior inquisitions.

The House committee will be lead by none other than Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Tennessee Republican and fellow graduate of Batsh*t University along with Michelle Bachmann. It should be noted that she and her other seven committee appointees have 100 percent ratings from the National Right to Life Committee.

Like its Benghazi predecessor, Democrats have called the new committee just another overly politicized panel that wastes taxpayer dollars. Their hope is that this new exercise in futility will yield the same negative results for Republicans as the Hillary witch-hunt, otherwise known as the Benghazi investigation.

I cannot think of a better way to show the American public that Republicans are not engaged in a war on woman than to go after a health service provider that is more popular than the National Rifle Association, the Supreme Court, both political parties, every presidential candidate and President Barack Obama! (NBC News/ Wall Street Journal).

Pandering to an ever-shrinking base is no way to win elections.

Jeb Slashes Payroll As Presidential Hope Dims

October 24, 2015 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

jeb-bush-logo-hed-2015

Jeb Bush just cut his campaign payroll by 40 percent in order to spend more money on ads in the early primary states. According to Bush, this will allow his campaign to operate more “lean and mean” going forward. When asked if the changes signaled trouble for his presidential bid, he said, “It means I have the ability to adapt.”

Campaign officials have said they will be directing more resources into early voting states such as Iowa, South Carolina and, most importantly, New Hampshire. “We are moving our resources into the states to ensure that voters in primary states and caucus states are introduced to his record and vision of the future, “ Bush spokeswoman Kristy Campbell said.

Jeb and company may want to rethink their new campaign strategy. His campaign recently spent $5 million on ads in New Hampshire and his poll numbers increased by a paltry .03%. At that rate, Bush may need a few of Donald Trump’s billions to see any meaningful upward tick.

The Republican establishment is getting desperate. No one figured Donald Trump and Ben Carson would have the staying power that they’ve had. According to the most current New Hampshire poll (Bloomberg), Bush is in third place (10%) behind Trump (24%) and Carson (17%).

What Bush’s backers are refusing to see (or admit) is that Republican primary voters do not need to be “introduced” to Jeb and his “vision of the future.” They simply do not want him as their candidate.

With all the early money behind him, Jeb has proven himself to be a poor candidate (excuse the pun). It has been one continuous string of gaffes for the bumbling candidate. But most importantly, he is being weighed down by an anchor around his neck that cannot be removed. It is his family name.

It is only a matter of time before Jeb’s generous donors see the writing on the wall. Oh, how Mama Bush was right! (What’s Wrong With Jeb!)

Lincoln Mercifully Pulls Plug On Moribund Campaign

October 23, 2015 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

images

In just a matter of one week, the field of Democratic presidential hopefuls has been reduced by 40%. Oh, if only the Republicans would be so kind to the American public!

Lincoln Chafee, after conferring with his campaign staff members today, all three, announced the end of his quixotic run for the Democratic presidential nomination. He did express regrets to his hundreds of supporters and thanked them all (individually) for sticking by him so long.

This surprising news comes less than one week after fellow presidential hopeful, Jim Webb, decided to call it quits. While Chafee’s poll numbers hovered around zero, Webb’s support was in the neighborhood of 2%, very respectable for a man who never really ran a campaign.

With Biden announcing he would not seek the Democratic nomination, only two and one half candidates are left standing: Clinton, Sanders and O’Malley.

Democratic National Committee chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, couldn’t be happier.

“Unlike the dysfunctional Republican Party, with its truckload of candidates, we have just the right size, three; barely enough to fit in a Pope car, a Fiat 500,” said an excited chairwoman.

The pressure will build on the remaining half-candidate in the race, Martin O’Malley.

“I know my poll numbers are currently low, but people are just starting to know me. I expect to improve dramatically on my 3%,” said a confident O’Malley. Speculation has it O’Malley is positioning himself as a possible VP pick for Clinton or Sanders.

Because the Democratic field has been reduced so drastically, the next scheduled Democratic debate will be aired by CBS from Clinton’s Chappaqua three-car garage.

“I thought it would present a nice, homey look and make an important point,” said Wasserman Schultz.
