Come November, Trump May Be Gone, But What Happens To His Loyalists?

August 17, 2016 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

Angry-Trump-supporters

It is becoming more apparent by the day, Donald Trump will not be the 45th president of the United States. How can I be so sure? The easy answer is to just look at the electoral map. Trump currently trails Clinton in all 11 states identified by pollsters as Electoral College battlegrounds. A few of those states, such as Virginia and Colorado, already seem beyond Trump’s reach.

But beyond the brutal reality of the electoral map, which points more and more to a Clinton landslide, Trump will not be our nation’s next commander in chief because he does not want the job. Since securing his party’s nomination, Trump has shown no desire to build the type of coalition needed to win a general election.

Whether consciously or not, Trump is doing an excellent job at self-sabotage. He is stuck in permanent primary campaign mode. By appealing to a base of angry white, working class males, Trump just continues to preach to the choir.

But what happens to Trump’s loyal band of mostly lower-middle class white voters from the Rust Belt and South once he is gone? Where will all that highly combustible anger and fear we’ve seen on the nightly news, and at Trump rallies, go once the base is left without a viable political outlet?

A true political leader would take his army of dedicated disciples and continue to lead the movement.

Donald Trump is not a political leader.

This year’s Republican presidential candidate is nothing more than a two-bit con man, the P.T. Barnum of 21st century American politics; a gifted impresario able to spot a sucker a mile away.

Trump, at the most generous best, is a mediocre political agnostic. He has no core political philosophy or set of beliefs. The art of discussing, or crafting, policy is neither his forte, nor his passion.

Following what will most certainly be a humiliating loss in November, Trump will abandon his loyal followers and go back to a life of ease, luxury and golf. He’s more Gordon Gekko than Che Guevera.

Perhaps a new leader for this large group of angry, white disaffected voters will emerge? Perhaps a new political party will be formed to organize this posse?

The fear is that, like some “Bernie or Bust” supporters who turned against their leader, calling him a fake and a fraud once he endorsed his former opponent, Trump’s well-armed “Second Amendment” stalwarts may turn into an unregulated militia that won’t take lightly being deceived once again.

Top 10 Reasons Trump Won’t Show His Tax Returns

August 16, 2016 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

1452214820131

Trump absolutely, categorically and unequivocally will not show his tax returns. Many political pundits are speculating the Trump camp has determined not releasing the returns will harm his campaign less than if he reveals the documents.

Here are the top 10 reasons why Donald Trump will not make public his tax returns:

  1. They would confirm he is worth less than he claims. Many financial experts believe Trump’s stated net worth ($10 billion) is even more inflated than his ego.
  2. They would show his close ties with Vladimir Putin. Apparently they are co-owners of a Russian dating site: ComradeMatch.com.
  3. They would reveal his lack of business smarts. Trump is believed to have lost money from a large investment in a chain of Florida alligator petting zoos.
  4. They would confirm he pays little, to no, taxes. It is rumored Trump pays less in taxes than his Mar-a-Lago cleaning lady, Inez Hernandez.
  5. They would show multiple bank accounts in the Bahamas. Most of Trump’s cash is believed to be sheltered in a Bahamian repository, The Royal Trust M. E. Bank.
  6. They would show little charitable giving. About the only confirmed largesse is to the RCGLVF (Retired Call Girls of Las Vegas Fund).
  7. They would show embarrassing, and perhaps, illegal political contributions. Trump is said to be the largest personal donor to the Louie Gohmert Re-election Committee.
  8. They would show questionable write-offs. It has long been rumored Trump deducts the cost of his “hair” maintenance.
  9. They would show he is asset rich but income poor. Sources say Trump’s main income stream is his monthly Social Security check.
  10. His longtime accountants, H & R Block, have advised him not to release his returns.

One can see how any one of the first nine reasons for Trump not releasing his returns could spell doom for the Republican presidential candidate.

If Prevaricating Were An Olympic Sport, Trump Wins Gold, Hands Down

August 15, 2016 By John DeProspo 5 Comments

tom-falsedonald-trump

In the good old days, presidential candidates were mostly truthful except for the occasional falsehood. Today, with candidate Donald Trump, it’s the inverse. Fact checkers have shown that only 9% of what comes out of Trump’s mouth is true or mostly true. In other words, a whopping 91% of what Trump says is half true, mostly false, false, or “pants on fire.”

Below is a link to Politifact’s list of false Trump statements:

All false statements involving Donald Trump

Below is a link to Politifact’s list of mostly false Trump statements:

All mostly false statements involving Donlad Trump

Why is a man whose default mode of speaking is to prevericate so popular with the Republican base?

Perhaps Sarah Jones, writing for Politicususa.com, said it best:

“They don’t care that Donald Trump lies; they love him because his lies soothe them. His lies appease them. His lies make them feel justified and righteous. His lies make them feel good about who they are. The voters are the children who do not want to be grown ups and the grown ups in the party have indulged them and fed them candy to keep from having to parent, and now they are stuck with a monster of a child.”

Donald J. Trump – Candidate Of Mass Destruction

August 14, 2016 By John DeProspo 3 Comments

trump_nuke_gop_ft

It seems at every turn, Donald Trump is sabotaging whatever chance he has of winning the presidency. Instead of pivoting towards the general election after clinching his party’s nomination, he remains stuck in the campaign style that brought him to the dance. Going against his own staff’s advice and the hopes of the Republican powers that be, Trump just keeps doubling down on his divisive rhetoric, committing one unforced error after another.

Since becoming his party’s presidential nominee, Trump has belittled the Muslim parents of a fallen soldier; suggested his “Second Amendment” people would prevent a President Clinton from appointing liberal Supreme Court justices; and, most recently, made the absurd claim President Obama is the actual founder of ISIS.

It is no wonder why more and more members of his own party are abandoning ship. The man just can’t find the resolve, or the desire, to change his ways.

“He can’t simply continue to preach to the choir and think he’s going to put together a coalition that will win the White House,” said Ryan Williams, a party strategist and former aide to 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney. “He’s essentially guaranteeing that he will lose by refusing to clean up his mistakes and stop committing future ones.”

Some are calling Trump the candidate of self-destruction.

However, there are still those who believe Trump, even with his hateful form of campaigning, can win the White House. Hillary Clinton’s high negatives give the self-proclaimed billionaire a puncher’s chance.

Which raises the scary thought of a thin-skinned, erratic and vindictive Donald Trump as the nation’s commander in chief.

“I think anyone who listens to what Donald Trump has to say on foreign policy should be concerned, “said John Noonan, a former nuclear missile officer (and former adviser to Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush). “This is not the first time that he has talked about nuclear weapons in a reckless manner. Remember, he was interested in maybe having Japan or South Korea leave the U.S. nuclear umbrella and develop nuclear weapons of their own. That is contrary to decades’ worth of nuclear weapons policy and is, frankly, a terrible and dangerous idea.”

While many Americans have no problem with Trump being the candidate of self-destruction, they are terrified with Trump as the man with the nuclear launch keys. They rightly fear Trump as the candidate of mass destruction.

Chelsea And Ivanka Meet For Lunch

August 13, 2016 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

chelsea_clinton_and_ivanka_trump_split-h_2016

Despite the animus between their parents, Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump have remained good friends. They recently met for lunch at the renowned Trump Tower Bar and Grill.

Ivanka: “Hey Chelse, glad you could make it. It’s been a while.”

Chelsea: “Always love coming to this place.”

Ivanka: “I’m having Chef Henri make us fabulous arugula salads with shrimp!”

Chelsea: “Ivanka, you know how we said we would always remain friends no matter happens in the presidential race? I have to be honest with you … I wish you could get your father to stop calling Mom, “Crooked Hillary.”

Ivanka: “Oh Chelse, you know my father isn’t being serious. He’s just being sarcastic! He’s having some fun. You know we Trumps are winners and we’ll do whatever it takes to win.”

Chelsea: “Well I don’t like it. Just like I don’t like him talking about “Second Amendment” people coming after Mom.”

Ivanka: “Chelsea, you’re being too sensitive. He’s just doing what he thinks he needs to do to stir up his base. Speaking of things that need to change, I would hope your mother stops calling my father a sexist, racist bigot.”

Chelsea: “Well …”

Ivanka: “Well what?”

Chelsea: “ She’s just saying what many people believe. You know members of his own party are calling him the same thing.”

Ivanka: “Well I don’t like it. My dad is the most tolerant, generous man I know.”

Chelsea: “ Of course you are going to feel that way. You’re his daughter.”

Ivanka: “So you think my dad is a sexist, racist bigot?”

Chelsea: “Well …”

Ivanka: “That’s it. I’ve had it. Our friendship is officially over. I’m leaving!”

Chelsea: ”But what about Chef Henri and the fabulous arugula salads?”

So ended the strained friendship between two powerful daughters of two powerful families. The two might not speak again until 2024 when they meet in the year’s first presidential debate.

For Some Republicans, It’s Country Over Party

August 12, 2016 By John DeProspo 1 Comment

Unknown

The GOP is undoubtedly in meltdown mode. Many Republicans are refusing to support their party’s presidential nominee, while others are officially abandoning the Party of Lincoln.

Like other Americans of conscience, Chris Ladd, Texas Republican and founder of the website goplifer.com, is leaving his political party of thirty years. Below is his letter of resignation as a York Township Republican committeeman:

“The Iraq War, the financial meltdown, the utter failure of supply-side theory, climate denial, and our strange pursuit of theocratic legislation have all been troubling. Yet it seemed that America’s party of commerce, trade, and pragmatism might still have time to sober up.

Remaining engaged in the party implied a contribution to that renaissance, an investment in hope. Donald Trump has put an end to that hope.

From his fairy-tale wall to his schoolyard bullying and his flirtation with violent racists, Donald Trump offers America a singular narrative – a tale of cowards. Fearful people, convinced of our inadequacy, trembling before a world alight with imaginary threats, crave a demagogue. Neither party has ever elevated to this level a more toxic figure, one that calls forth the darkest elements of our national character.

With three decades invested in the Republican Party, there is a powerful temptation to shrug and soldier on. Despite the bold rhetoric, we all know Trump will lose. Why throw away a great personal investment over one bad nominee? Trump is not merely a poor candidate, but an indictment of our character. Preserving a party is not a morally defensible goal if that party has lost its legitimacy.”

“Fast-forward to our present leadership and the nature of our dilemma is clear. I watched Paul Ryan speak at Donald Trump’s convention the way a young child watches his father march off to prison. Thousands of Republican figures that loathe Donald Trump, understand the danger he represents, and privately hope he loses, are publicly declaring their support for him. In Illinois our local and state GOP organizations, faced with a choice, have decided on complicity.

Our leaders’ compromise preserves their personal capital at our collective cost. Their refusal to dissent robs all Republicans of moral cover. Evasion and cowardice has prevailed over conscience. We are now, and shall indefinitely remain, the Party of Donald Trump.

I will not contribute my name, my work, or my character to an utterly indefensible cause. No sensible adult demands moral purity from a political party, but conscience is meaningless without constraints. A party willing to lend its collective capital to Donald Trump has entered a compromise beyond any credible threshold of legitimacy. There is no redemption in being one of the “good Nazis.”

I hereby resign my position as a York Township Republican committeeman. My thirty-year tenure as a Republican is over.”

Trump Cologne… The Sweet Smell Of Success?

August 11, 2016 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Donald-Trump-Cologne-Success

As you might except from a master salesman who deals in illusion and delusion, Donald Trump’s fragrance line is called “Success.” For about $30, you can buy a bottle of this scented water with the Trump label.

Trump, up until his recent foray into presidential politics, has been very protective of his brand. His entire life has been spent associating the Trump name with luxury, style and, well, success. How else could he take an ordinary product and double or triple its normal price? With the Trump imprimatur, that’s how!

If you haven’t noticed, the Trump brand has been taking a beating lately.

People normally attracted to the Trump label are shunning or boycotting many of the huckster’s products from hotel rooms, casino trips, items from his clothing line, food products or anything else affiliated with Trump.

According to data provided by Hipmunk, an online travel reservations company, occupancy at Trump’s hotels is down almost across the board, sometimes by as much as 75% compared to this time last year.

Of course, Hipmunk is just one of a bunch of online travel booking websites, but a survey of 2,000 Americans conducted in late May by the branding company Skift found that almost 57% of Americans were less likely to stay in a Trump hotel now that the company’s namesake is on the campaign trail.

A large chunk of Donald Trump’s net worth (whatever it actually is) is attributed to his brand. In fact, Trump has evaluated his brand’s worth at $3.3 billion. As things stand, Trump may need a serious talk with his accountants.

How much lower will Trump allow his cherished brand to fall? Might not a prudent man find a graceful way to exit the race? Ah, but there’s the rub… no one would ever describe Trump as a prudent man!

A crushing defeat in November to Hillary Clinton would not only seriously wound Trump’s huge ego but also devalue his brand to chump change.

Trump might even be forced to relabel his cologne. Instead of “Eau de Toilette” he may have to go with “Toilet Water.”

Trump Continues to Employ His Trusty Shovel

August 10, 2016 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Just when you think Trump couldn’t get any lower, out pops his golden shovel and the Republican presidential nominee just digs a deeper hole for himself.

No one knows what rock bottom is for the real estate tycoon, turned TV celebrity, turned cult leader, but suggesting his gun-loving, “Second Amendment” enthusiasts resort to gun violence in order to stop a President Clinton from appointing liberal judges has to be pretty close.

Of course, Trump’s rabid group of followers is defending him and blaming the media for deliberately misrepresenting his words in order to stir up a controversy where none exists.

Here are Donald Trump’s exact words:

“Hillary wants to abolish — essentially abolish the Second Amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know,” Trump said.

This is not the first time Trump has spoken about “Second Amendment” rights or remedies.

At an Arizona rally this past April, Trump told a cheering crowd, “We’re going to win with our Second Amendment. We’re gonna win big league with our Second Amendment!”

If you believe many Trump supporters are nothing more than textbook cultists hanging on to his every word, be worried … be very worried.

Trump may have once just been a bombastic buffoon and a great source of entertainment, but he has now clearly evolved into a national security threat. Realizing this, some responsible members of his own party are  determined to stop him at all costs.

By alienating moderate Republicans, independents, women, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Muslims, the disabled, and veterans, there is no way Trump could ever win a general election.

So what could he possibly be thinking?

The one conclusion many have drawn from Trump’s dangerous and erratic behavior is that he is building up his base for a media empire to be created once he is crushed at the polls come November.

Of course, Trump will claim the system was rigged against him and that he’s still a winner. And his cultists will believe it.

Trexit … Trump Will Not Risk Damaging His Brand Any Further

August 8, 2016 By John DeProspo 7 Comments

2cec

The steady drip of defections is only getting worse for Donald Trump. Today, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins became the latest Republican to distance herself from her party’s presidential nominee. She will not be voting for the man who she believes hijacked her beloved party.

Like rats on the sinking Titanic, Republicans at all levels of government are running away from a man who looks more and more like a sure loser.

With many polls showing Hillary Clinton leading Trump by double digits, the question now becomes: how long before Trump finds an excuse to abandon the race?

For a man who thought entering the Republican presidential primary was a great way to promote his brand, he sure has made a mess of things!

The name that up until recently was synonymous with success, luxury and fearlessness is now better known for racism, sexism and crudeness.

A landslide loss to Clinton would only be adding insult to injury for the Trump brand. The master salesman could never abide such a defeat.

The only question is how low in the polls does Trump have to sink, and how many more prominent Republicans have to give him the heave-ho, before Trump employs his exit strategy?

My guess is that Trump will be bailing sooner rather than later. He not only has his brand to think about but also his pride (or fragile ego, as some might say).

One thing Trump cherishes above all else is being a winner, or as any con man would say, being perceived a winner. As his situation becomes more and more precarious, Trump will find a way to save face. He certainly does not want be the GOP’s next Barry Goldwater!

It will be interesting to watch the master trickster work his way out of the self-made steel box he finds himself in. Perhaps a consultation with David Copperfield may be in order?

“Why do we care what the polls have to say? What do the Polish people know about American politics anyway!” -George W. Bush

August 7, 2016 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Too many people get stressed out by polling data.

Polls at this stage of the presidential election are just about useless. Some have Hillary up but a lot, some by a little. Some polls even have Trump in the lead.

It is best to heed the wise words of our nation’s 43rd president:

“Why do we care what the polls have to say? What do the Polish people know about American politics anyway!”
