Election 2020 … Perfect Storm, In Reverse, For Trump?

October 27, 2020 By John DeProspo 5 Comments

Against the odds, Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016.

Many likened Trump’s improbable win to that of drawing an inside straight in poker. Yes, Lady Luck was on Trump’s side in 2016 … just like that fickle mistress of chance appears to be against him in 2020.

In 2016, a number of unlikely, and unusual, events led to Trump’s odds-defying victory over Hillary Clinton.

First you had Trump running against a flawed, and damaged, opponent. The Republican effort to run the former secretary of state into the ground, through bogus investigations, paid off. It was House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, who gave away the game when he famously blurted out, “Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping.”

Then there was the James Comey factor. Just days prior to the 2016 election, the FBI Director wrote a letter to Congress in which he stated the FBI had newly “learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation” into the private email server that Clinton used as secretary of state. This was after Comey cleared Clinton of any wrongdoing just a few months before. The Comey revelation upended the news cycle at a critical juncture in the presidential race and soon halved Clinton’s lead in the polls.

There was, of course, the concerted effort by the Russians to affect the outcome of the election in favor of Trump.

Throw in your usual Republican voter suppression and you had the perfect storm that swept Trump into power.

In 2020, you still have Republican efforts to suppress the votes of those unlikely to vote their way … but with a twist. This time around, the strategy seems to be backfiring as determined Democrats are doing everything within their power to make their voices heard … including waiting in voting lines for up to 11 hours.

Then there is the once in a lifetime pandemic and it’s total mishandling by the Trump administration, with over 225,000 Americans dead, and counting.

There is the resultant tanking of the economy, with millions of Americans unemployed and numerous businesses lost. Trump’s strong suit … severely damaged.

Add into the mix Trump’s failed response to multiple instances of police brutality and the systematic racism it laid bare.

Today we are seeing young people so concerned about their future, and the environment, that they are doing the unthinkable … heading to the polls in record numbers.

Trump, no doubt, is in a heap of trouble. Can he still win reelection? Yes, but he will need to draw a royal flush this time around.

By all appearances, Luck will not be a lady to Trump in 2020. It seems she is blowing on some other guy’s dice.

Joe, It’s Not Too Late … Agree To More Debates!

October 16, 2020 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Reprint from moronmajority.com

Conventional political wisdom has it that the frontrunner in an election wants fewer debates, while the underdog always wants more. So, this summer, when the Trump campaign floated the idea of more debates (over and above the three already agreed to), Biden did the predictable thing … he rejected the offer.

But, as we all know, there is nothing conventional when it comes to Donald Trump.

As the first presidential debate showed, Trump is his own worst enemy. Many commentators described that first debate as “the worst ever,” thanks mainly to Trump’s obnoxious antics.

And now we’ve had a town hall where Trump, once again, did little to improve his standing among voters … thanks, in part, to the skillful moderating by Savannah Guthrie.

Another tidbit of political wisdom is that, while debates may draw viewers, they rarely change minds.

But with Trump, we may have that rare exception!

Many pundits agree that Trump was the clear loser in both “debates.” They believe he not only failed to improve his electoral chances, but he was so off-putting that he actually may have hurt his odds of winning reelection.

So, go ahead Joe, agree to more “debates” … as many as Trump wants! You’re free tomorrow night, right?

More of Trump’s objectionable shtick can only sway more undecided voters to your camp, Joe, and may even peel off some soft Republican support.

Just one caveat, Mr. Vice President. Any debates you agree to, insist that they are moderated by Savannah Guthrie!

Has Herschel Walker Turned on Trump And Republican Party?

October 12, 2020 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

After carrying the ball for Donald Trump at the 2020 Republican National Convention, Herschel Walker seems to have fumbled.

The 58-year-old former football star recently shared a video clip with the caption: “People let’s educate ourselves on this election…the freedom of America is at stake!”

Herschel goes on to say, “I just want people to know, truth is what is going to set you free. So vote truth. Not your opinion. And not just what you feel or what you think. Vote the truth.”

Granted, Walker does not tell you who to vote for. But is it possible he wants you to cast your ballot for Trump, a man who has made over 20,000 false or misleading statements over the last four years?

Or is it possible the very religious Walker has finally seen the light and crossed over into the end zone of true moral clarity?

Nah, pitifully, Walker who is one of the stronger running backs in college and NFL history, is still nothing more than a Republican cheerleader.

President Urges All Americans To Wear Masks

October 4, 2020 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Now that Donald Trump has been infected with the coronavirus, and is spending his days at Walter Reed Medical Center, the president is asking Americans to do their part in saving lives by wearing masks.

“We can save 100,000 lives in the next 100 days, according to the head of the CDC, if everyone wears a mask in public,” said the president on Thursday. “Be patriotic. It’s not about being a tough guy, it’s about doing your part.”

No … those are not the words of Donald Trump, the current president, but of Joe Biden, the soon-to-be president.

Instead of taking the opportunity to stress the importance of wearing masks, Trump recorded a four-minute video, from the hospital, focusing on his favorite topic, himself. “I feel much better now,” Trump said.

He then went on to say how ready he is to get back on the campaign trail.

“I have to be back, because we still have to make America great again,” said Trump. “We’ve done an awfully good job of that, but we still have steps to go, and we have to finish that job, and I’ll be back. I think I’ll be back soon, and I look forward to finishing up the campaign the way it was started, and the way we’ve been doing, and the kind of numbers that we’ve been doing.”

Referring to how great a job he’s been doing in fighting the virus, Trump said, “We’ve been so proud of it, but this was something that happened, and it’s happened to millions of people all over the world, and I’m fighting for them. Not just in the US. I’m fighting for them all over the world.”

But, at what could not have been a more opportune moment, Trump couldn’t do the one thing his own director of the CDC, Robert Redfield, did last month at a congressional hearing … stress the importance of wearing masks.

Asked about the significance of mask wearing, Redfield replied, “I’m not gonna comment directly about the president, but I am going to comment as the CDC director that face masks, these face masks, are the most important powerful public health tool we have.”

“They are our best defense,” Redfield added. “I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against COVID than when I take a COVID vaccine.”

Is anyone surprised Trump didn’t seize the moment to actually do something that could make a difference in saving lives? God forbid!  What would his supporters think … now that he has it, he’s gone soft?

The next president, who will be sworn in on January 20, 2021, will not feel the need to play Macho Man.

No More Debates … Even If They Help Biden

October 1, 2020 By John DeProspo 1 Comment

If you’re a Trump believer, your man won the first presidential debate against Vice President Joe Biden, hands down.

“I really enjoyed last night’s debate with Sleepy Joe … the verdict is in and they say that we, all of us, won big last night,” Trump told a crowd during a rally in Duluth, Minnesota yesterday.

Of course, if you look at the actual polling, it is the complete opposite.

According to a CNN poll of debate watchers conducted by SSRS, six in 10 debate watchers said former Vice President Joe Biden did the best job in Tuesday’s debate, and just 28% say Donald Trump did.

A CNBC/Change Research poll conducted Tuesday and Wednesday found 53% of likely voters nationwide said Biden did a better job in the debate, compared with 29% for Trump.

So, two more scheduled presidential debates should only help Biden, right? Yes.

But would two more exhibitions of what some have called a “national disgrace” and “an embarrassment,” be good for the country? No.

As conservative columnist, George Will, writes in the Washington Post, “The national interest — actually, national security — demands that the other two scheduled mortifications, fraudulently advertised as presidential debates, should be canceled: When a nation makes itself pathetic, the response of enemy nations is not sympathy.”

Yes, more of what we saw on display Tuesday would not only dishearten most Americans, it would also demoralize our friends and allies, while emboldening our enemies.

The bottom line is that the first presidential debate did nothing to change the hearts and minds of voters.

According to the previously mentioned CNBC/Change Research poll, just 2% of respondents said the debate changed their vote, versus 98% who said it didn’t.

So why would we need what would, no doubt, only be the continuation of a fiasco?

Some are suggesting we go ahead with the debates but that they will need to be “fine-tuned.”

Seriously? You cannot fine-tune the mind of a petulant man-child that is Donald Trump.

We’ve heard this phrase many times during the Trump MisAdministration … “enough is enough.”

Yes. No more useless “debates.” Period.
