Is there anything more enjoyable to Republicans than to “own the libs”? Oh, how they love to mock, infuriate or just get under the skin of those snooty liberals with their awesome, uncompromising conservatism!
To “own” someone is to dominate and humiliate them, and the “libs,” as described by Rolling Stone magazine, can loosely be defined as “anyone to the left of Sean Hannity.”
“Owning the libs” became a mantra of conservatism long before Trump came along. But since Trump’s ascension to the White House, to “own the libs” is less an identifiable act or set of policy goals than an ethos … a way of life; a civic religion, if you will.
Unfortunately for those who refuse to get vaccinated (predominantly Republicans of the red state variety), with the arrival of the coronavirus, “owning the libs” has taken a deadly turn.
I’m sure you’ve seen videos of those anti-vaxxers hooked up to respirators proudly claiming they do not regret not getting their vaccine shot. Heck it’s all about personal freedom, isn’t it, they tell you.
So now the “if liberals are for it, I’m against” line of thinking (I use the word loosely) has resulted in some Republicans actually accepting death over ever admitting they were wrong?
God help those poor, lost souls!
Interestingly, Urbandictionary.com defines “owning the libs” as: To inflict significant harm upon oneself, or significantly benefit the libs, out of a misguided attempt at spite.
Perhaps Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”
If Emerson were around in today’s Covid-19 world, he might have added, ”and it could kill you.”

This may sound cruel but let nature (Darwinism) take its course.
John DeProspo says
Weeding out the weak, the infirm and the stupid has always been nature’s way.

Since before I was old enough to vote, I’ve always been opposed to the idea of “this American political party is bad.” I’ve always believed that each party had something substantial to offer. Even when I disagreed with a political party’s policy or even most of its policies, I respected that party.
But that was before Donald Trump was selected by the Republican Party as its presidential nominee. That was before Donald Trump was elected president with the support of the Republican Party. That was before four years of Trump continuing to receive support from the Republican Party. That was before I saw the anti-vaccine, anti-science, anti-logic, anti-non-Hispanic White voters, anti-humanitarian beliefs and actions of the Republican Party.
The modern day Republican Party is bad. It needs to be fixed or flushed.
John DeProspo says
I’ll go with “flushed!”

Actually the Republican Party aligned itself with the corporate world and against the average American during the Reagan administration. All the weird religious, anti science anti women and anti minority stuff only happens because of the need to expand their constituency beyond the ultra wealthy to win elections.
John DeProspo says
Yes. St. Reagan lead Republicans to where they find themselves (along with the rest of us) today.

They’ve certainly gotten the better of this liberal. Of course…………..I’m still alive.

Ha!
