Trump Makes Good On Campaign Promise To Run Country Like His Business

May 13, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

We recently learned just how bad Donald Trump is as a businessman. The New York Times has reported Trump lost a staggering $1 billion over a span of ten years (1985-1994). According to the Times, “Mr. Trump appears to have lost more money than nearly any other individual American taxpayer.” But didn’t Trump promise he would run the country like his business?

Here are some examples of how Trump is a man of his word:

  1. Trump’s “tax cuts” will increase the deficit by at least $1 trillion over a 10-year period (Joint Committee on Taxation)
  2. Trump’s trade battles cost the U.S. economy $7.8 billion in lost gross domestic product in 2018 (National Bureau of Economic Research)
  3. Under Trump’s tariffs, the U.S. lost 20,000 solar energy jobs (Forbes)
  4. Trump’s trade war with China could slash almost 1 million jobs from U.S. economy (Trade Partnership Worldwide)
  5. Because of Trump’s trade policies, more farmers are filing for bankruptcy (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
  6. As a direct result of Trump’s trade wars, Wisconsin’s milk farmers are facing extinction (New York Times)

Figures … of all the broken promises (new and better healthcare, draining the swamp, massive infrastructure project, etc.) this one, on how he would run the country (into the ground), Trump has kept!

Dems … Enough With The “Mister Nice Guy” Routine Already!

May 9, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

When will Democrats learn how to deal with Republicans? When will they stop bringing knives to gunfights? When will they fight fire with fire?

We are in the middle of a constitutional crisis. We have a lawless president, and administration, that keeps giving the bird to our Constitution and system of government. And what do Dems do? Play nicy nice. We have cabinet members thumbing their noses at lawful subpoenas and Dems just keep writing cordial letters and asking for compliance.

Yes, issuing contempt citations is all fine and good … but who will enforce them?  Our compromised Justice Department?

Former Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich) made a great suggestion recently, arguing against fruitless efforts to get this administration to enforce contempt citations … jail the lawbreakers! While not used since 1935, Congress has the constitutional authority (inherent contempt power) to detain and imprison a person found in contempt until that person complies with the congressional demand or that Congress comes to an end.

“To protect its constitutional authority and carry out its constitutional responsibility to the American people, it should not hesitate to use its inherent contempt power if needed,” said Levin.

The Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin agrees with Levin. She argues for the Dems to start employing their “lock them up” power.

“One can imagine the chaos that might ensue from an effort to put … Cabinet officials behind bars, but it does seem time for the House to take some measure(s) at least as dramatic as Trump and his Republican sycophants’ blatant, repeated violations of the rule of law,” writes Rubin in yesterday’s Post.

Rubin goes on to give Dems a list of actions they should consider in dealing with the criminal syndicate now running this country:

“Pursue crushing civil fines against recalcitrant witnesses, impeach Mnuchin and Barr, seek sanctions to punish lawyers for ethics violations and, yes, if need be, try to lock them up. Perhaps if Democrats start wielding their power, some Republicans (just a few) will recognize the gravity of the situation they have created and head off the administration before a true constitutional calamity ensues.”

Jennifer Rubin, a conservative columnist, is spot on. It’s past time for Dems to grow a pair and steal a page from the Republicans’ book of hardball.

“Lock em’ up! Lock em’ up! Lock em’ up!

The Fate of American Democracy May Hinge On One Person … John Roberts

May 5, 2019 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

When Richard Nixon refused to comply with the Senate Watergate committee’s subpoena to turn over his White House tapes, the standoff resulted in litigation which made its way to the Supreme Court.

In an 8-0 decision (Justice Rehnquist recused himself), the Court ruled against Nixon and directed him to turn over the tapes to Congress.

Much like Nixon, the Trump Administration is refusing to comply with a lawful congressional subpoena for the full, unredacted Mueller report (and its supporting documents).

How would the current conservative Supreme Court rule on Trump’s clear defiance of established law?

There is little doubt this Court would be divided. No unanimous decision here, folks, as in United States v. Nixon.

You can bet on a 5-4 decision, either way.

Since Justice Anthony Kennedy retired from the Court, Chief Justice John Roberts has become the de facto “swing vote.” With four solid conservatives on the bench, now that Trump has been able to get Gorsuch and Kavanaugh to join the other two right-wing ideologues (Thomas and Alito), how would Roberts vote?

If Roberts joins his conservative colleagues, you can pretty much forget about the rule of law, and the Constitution for that matter, in this country. We will have a kneecapped congress unable to fulfill its oversight responsibilities, and we’ll have entered a new era of unchecked, unrestrained executive powers.

If Roberts sides with the four liberals on the Court, Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan, we will remain a nation that honors the Constitution and the separation of powers. The decision would serve as a strong rebuke to a lawless president and administration.

So what would Roberts do if some form of United States v. Trump makes its way to his court?

If you remember, much to the dismay of conservatives, Roberts was the deciding vote which upheld Obamacare (Affordable Care Act.)

Roberts is what I would label a principled conservative jurist who actually cares about the Court’s reputation and how history will judge him and his court.

As Michael O’Donnell writes in The Atlantic, “Roberts is the most interesting judicial conservative in living memory because he is both ideologically outspoken and willing to break with ideology in a moment of great political consequence. His response to the constitutional crisis that awaits will define not just his legacy, but the Supreme Court’s as well.”

While he has sided with his conservative colleagues in 87.5 percent of 5–4 decisions, I’m betting there is a better than 50-50 chance Roberts will do the right thing and tell Trump and his cabal of corrupt cohorts they are not above the law.

Attorney General Needs To Be DisBarred

May 2, 2019 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

After yesterday’s shameful performance in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and after today’s refusal to appear before the House Judiciary Committee, there are calls from many Democrats for William Barr’s resignation or impeachment.

While such demands are justified (the man flat-out lied to the American people and to Congress about the Mueller report) neither of these avenues will get rid of Barr.

William Barr will not resign. After all, he is doing exactly what he was hired to do … be Trump’s “Roy Cohn.” Said Trump during an interview on Fox Business, “He did a fantastic job today, I’m told. I got to see some of it. He did a fantastic job.”

Impeachment would almost certainly be a dead end.  The same rules apply for impeaching an attorney general as for a president. The House starts the proceedings; the Senate votes to remove. The only difference is that the trial in the Senate would be presided over by the Vice President instead of the Chief Justice.

While many legal scholars agree that Barr’s knowing misrepresentation of the Mueller report’s findings and his lying to Congress rise to the level of impeachable offenses, many believe the Republican-controlled Senate would never vote to remove him.  Harvard constitutional law professor, Laurence Tribe, doesn’t believe the process will ever get started.  Said Tribe, “While Barr’s behavior ‘might in theory’ warrant calls for removal, it ‘seems exceedingly unlikely’.”

A far better and more effective way of getting rid of the man who has no business being the people’s attorney is through disbarment.

While the Attorney General need not be a licensed lawyer to hold the position, necessity requires it. Two main duties of the Attorney General are to: 1. Represent the United States in all legal matters and 2. Furnish advice and opinions, formal and informal, on legal matters to the President and the Cabinet and to the heads of the executive departments and agencies of the government, as provided by law.

In order to represent the United States in legal matters and/or to provide legal advice, the Attorney General must be qualified to do so. In the U.S., in order to provide legal advice, you need to be a licensed attorney.

Needtoimpeach.com has started an online petition calling for Barr’s disbarment:

Attorney General William Barr knowingly misled the public and Congress about the Mueller investigation’s findings, in direct violation of Rule 4.1 of the Virginia State Bar. Barr’s conduct warrants disbarment.

This seems to be the most practical way of ridding our government of this Trump sycophant and legal hack.

Add Windmills To The List Of Things Trump Hates

April 30, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

There are many things Donald Trump hates: Mueller’s probe, the media, health food, Hillary Clinton, and, yes, even Meryl Streep.

Add windmills to the list.

Trump has publicly stated he hates windmills because:

1. The noise from windmills may cause cancer.

2. Windmills cause a drop in property values.

3. If wind powers our electricity, TVs will go off when the wind stops blowing.

But the number one reason Trump hates windmills is because of the effect they have on his iconic floppy coif! (Hey, the man is vain … and do you have any idea how long it takes to glue that piece into place?)

Conway Slams “King Of Branding” With New Nickname: “Deranged Donald”

April 27, 2019 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

George Conway, husband of one of Donald Trump’s most ardent defenders in the media, Kellyanne Conway (I know, it’s hard to figure out how this marriage works!), has hit the man currently occupying the White House with a new sobriquet: “Deranged Donald.”

Will the name stick?

Probably not, just like none of the following nicknames have permanently stuck to the Teflon Don.

Here is my list of the top 10 Trump nicknames:

Adolph Twitler

Benedict Donald

Cadet Bonespurs

Commander in Cheat

Don The Con

F**kface Von Clownstick

Hair Furor

Prima Donald

The Lyin King

Trumplethinskin

Do you have a Trump nickname not on this list? Feel free to share it in comments.

Trump Kneecaps Rule Of Law

April 25, 2019 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

When it comes to complying with legitimate congressional demands, Donald Trump has one word … “Fugetaboutit!”

Trump has directed his underlings to refuse the House Democrats’ lawful requests for his tax returns and has ordered former and present members of his staff to defy congressional subpoenas for testimony before House oversight committees.

This is in line with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s findings that Trump has obstructed justice and has directed others to do the same.

Many political commentators are accusing Trump of besmirching the Presidency and denigrating the rule of law.

But does this really come as a surprise? Trump did swear on a bible to “faithfully execute the Office of the President and … the Constitution.”

Could “Something Old, Something New” Be The Winning Formula For Dems In 2020?

April 16, 2019 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

As we get set for the first Democratic primary debate in June, it’s as good a time as any to start thinking about who would make the best presidential nominee and which “couple” would represent the most formidable ticket.

My belief is that after what will be four years of total havoc and chaos in Washington D.C., the country needs a stabilizing force at the head of its government. It is not a time to experiment with a political lightweight or unknown. What we need is an experienced elder statesman who can restore honor and dignity to the once revered Office of the President.

This is why I believe Bernie Sanders, or Joe Biden, would be the right choice for Democrats.

This is the something old part.

As for a vice presidential candidate, the country could use something totally out of the ordinary.

This is the something new part.

While a female VP pick would be something new in the sense that a woman has never served as second in command (the unsuccessful Walter Mondale chose Geraldine Ferraro to be his running mate in 1984) I’m thinking of something more radical. Instead of the first female vice president, I’m thinking more of the first openly gay vice president.

South Bend, Indiana, mayor, Pete Buttigieg, fits the bill perfectly.

The 37-year-old is doing quite well for himself. Before “officially” announcing his bid for the presidency, he raised $7 million. After declaring he was running for the White House this past Sunday, he raised an additional $1 million … in just four hours!

Yes, a good part of the country is still homophobic. But the “fear of gays” is starting to melt almost as fast as the polar ice caps.

As of 2019, all 50 states have been served by openly LGBT elected politicians in some capacity; 46 states have elected openly LGBT politicians to one or both houses of their state legislature; there has been one openly bisexual state governor (Kate Brown).

Oh, by the way, if you listen the Rhodes scholar Buttigieg speak, you too will be won over by his intelligence, poise and clear vision for the future.

Sanders and Buttigieg. Biden and Buttigieg. It doesn’t matter. This is the Democrats’ best chance to regain the now sullied White House.

One last thought. It would be very important for Sanders or Biden to announce they would be a one-term president. President Buttigieg in 2024? Count me in!

Addendum: According to a recent Fox News poll, in a matchup between Trump and Biden, Biden wins by 7 points, Sanders wins by 3 points. Both Harris and Warren lose by 2 points.

Trump High On Daughter Ivanka

April 12, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

In an interview with The Atlantic, Donald Trump couldn’t help but gush over his favorite daughter Ivanka.

The proud papa said he had considered nominating her to lead the World Bank.

Trump also considered her for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

“She’s a natural diplomat,” said Trump.

As for the future, Trump thinks the sky’s the limit for Ivanka.

“If she ever wanted to run for president, I think she’d be very, very hard to beat,” Trump added.

Trump praised his daughter for possessing “a great calmness.” Of course, he added that’s “usually a genetic thing.”

Surprisingly, Trump admitted he considered naming his son Barron to head the Navy. Said Trump, “He watches a ton of Popeye cartoons, you know.”

Of course this last statement is not true. Right?

Weatherman Has Faith Book On Climate Will Change Hearts And Minds

April 8, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Paul Douglas, a well-known Minnesota meteorologist, believes in the science of climate change and has written a book on the subject. He is also an Evangelical.

The book, “Caring for Creation: An Evangelical’s Guide to Climate Change and a Healthy Environment,” hit the bookstores this month. It is co-authored by the Rev. Mitch Hescox, president of the Evangelical Environmental Network.

“I figured if people didn’t want to hear from scientists, maybe they’d listen to a minister and a meteorologist,” said Douglas.

Douglas’s argument is that climate change is irrefutable and it is a Christian obligation to care for the planet and all that God has created.

Some of the book’s solutions for combating climate change focus on renewable energy such as wind and solar, which Douglas describes as “cheaper, clean, homegrown American energy” that can lead to “energy freedom.”

Will the book’s pious message resonate with skeptical Evangelicals who view climate change, a.k.a global warming, as a hoax to grow big government?

For hardcore Evangelicals who support Donald Trump’s view that climate change is a myth concocted by the Chinese to give them a competitive manufacturing edge, I’m giving the effort, though commendable, a snowball’s chance in hell.
