Breaking Good – “Bernie-Mentum” Is Real

August 12, 2015 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

hillary-sanders

In a stunning turn of events, New Hampshire Democratic voters are “feeling the Bern.” In the latest Franklin Pierce University/Boston Herald poll, Bernie Sanders has now done what took Barack Obama longer to do eight years ago — surpass Hillary Clinton in a key primary state.

Sanders leads Clinton 44-37 percent among likely Democratic primary voters, the first time the heavily favored Clinton has trailed in the 2016 primary campaign, according to the poll of 442 New Hampshirites.

In a FPU/BH poll taken five months ago, Hillary had a 37-point lead over Sanders, 44/7. That’s a 44-point swing in just five months, putting a severe dent in Hillary’s aura of invincibility. What should be particularly troubling to the Clinton camp is that these results come after Hillary has tried to beef up her progressive bone fides by tracking further to the left.

Can the presidential nomination be snatched again from the heir apparent by a present day, geriatric Obama? Will the Bern just burn out? After all, he is 73 years old.

The dramatic news coming out of New Hampshire should give heart to the other Democratic presidential contenders, especially former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. It may even give Joe Biden the impetus (excuse) to enter the race.

As the election (I use the term loosely) of George W. Bush proved, in politics, anything is possible. Stay tuned.

Carly On The Rise

August 12, 2015 By John DeProspo 1 Comment

Of all Republican presidential candidates relegated to last week’s pre-debate debate (otherwise known as the “kid’s table” or “happy hour”) Carly Fiorina impressed the adults in the Party the most. In a recent Suffolk University poll of Iowa Republicans, more than 82 percent of poll respondents said that of the seven second-tier debate participants, Fiorina impressed them the most; nearly 93 percent of the Iowans polled by Suffolk said that Fiorina should be invited in the future to debate at the “adult table” against top-tier Republicans.

There are two ways of looking at Fiorina’s success. One, she was working against a weak field (Jim Gilmore, Bobby Jindal, really?) Two, she really was impressive and looked presidential… at least as presidential as the underwhelming other ten candidates that made it to the prime-time debate.

I’m going with number one, with a slight twist. Most Republican voters simply don’t know much about her. They believe she was a successful female executive at a large tech company and that’s it.

As more ink is devoted to the Carly Fiorina story, more voters will come to know her the way many Californians already do; as the lousy CEO of one of Silicon Valley’s marquee corporations, Hewlett-Packard, and as the losing candidate against Sen. Barbara Boxer in 2010.

Fiorina’s calling card is her business experience. She touts her rise to the top from a lowly secretary at a small real estate company to the leadership of one of the most beloved corporations.

But after a rocket-like ascent, she was fired from HP in early 2005 amid tumult with her board of directors. All in all, under her leadership, HP’s stock price fell a whooping 54 percent, making it one of the worst performing high-tech firms during that time. She did leave with a severance package estimated at $40 million, which speaks well for her negotiating skills, or those of her lawyers!

Carly Fiorina recently spoke out against government-mandated paid maternity leave. That should ingratiate her to all those secretaries who haven’t quite yet made it to the top like her.

When you peel away the Fiorina layers, you will find just another package of conventional Republican orthodoxy, wrapped around a questionable presidential resume.

Trump Tries Making Nice With Kelly

August 11, 2015 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

DONALD-TRUMP-MEGYN-KELLY-BLOOD-COMMENTS-618

In an effort to minimize the damage from his confrontation with Megyn Kelly during the first Republican presidential debate, Donald Trump has agreed to an exclusive interview with the Fox News host. According to reliable sources, Trump wanted to layout his plan for stimulating the economy and creating new jobs.

While the interview was recorded and has not yet aired, a secret transcript of the interview has surfaced (see below.)

***********

Kelly; “Thank you for giving me this exclusive interview. I know you and many of your supporters thought I was attacking you by asking that war against women question.”

Trump: “Oh, the one where you asked whether someone who calls women ‘fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals” has the temperament to be elected president? That one?”

Kelly: ”Yes. But everyone at Fox, including Roger, thought it was a fair question.”

Trump: “Well tell that fat slob of a boss of yours I didn’t appreciate the stupid question.”

Kelly: “OK. Do you at least want to apologize to me for saying that I had, and I quote, ‘blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever?’

Trump: “Darling, you don’t really know me, do you? I always speak the truth so I don’t apologize, I clarify. What I meant was that I thought you had a subconjunctival hemorrhage, you know, a broken blood vessel in your eye.”

Kelly: “Yeah, and what about that ‘blood coming out of her wherever’ part? You implied I was menstruating.”

Trump; “Well, were you on the rag or not? You still haven’t proved me wrong. You know what, before we continue with this important and groundbreaking exclusive, I think you should apologize to me.”

Kelly: “Apologize to you? You’ve got some nerve! Yes, I was trying to bring out the fact that you have a long history of misogyny. You have a mouth not even fit for the gutter. You’re a user and abuser of women!”

Trump: “OK, Calm down, babe. It was fun. But I’m outta here. Looks like you still have blood coming out of your wherever. Maybe another time.”

Ten Memorable Quotes From GOP Presidential Debate

August 10, 2015 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

With approximately 24 million viewers, Fox’s first prime-time Republican presidential debate became the most-watched cable news program ever. In fact, it is now the highest non-sports cable program of all time! While many thought Donald Trump was the winner of the debate, the real winner was Fox News.

Below is a list of ten memorable quotes culled from both the prime-time, and kid’s table, debates.

Huckabee: “It’s time that we … protect children instead of rip up their body parts and sell them like they’re parts of a Buick.”

Trump: “If I’m the nominee, I will pledge I will not run as an independent.”

Graham: “If we don’t stop them over there, they are coming here, as sure as I stand here in front of you.”

Walker: “It’s only by the blood of Jesus Christ that I’ve been redeemed from my sins.”

Christie: “If you think it’s bad now, you should have seen it when I got there.”

Rubio: “If this election is a resume competition, then Hillary is going to be the next president.”

Jindal: “Give Bernie Sanders credit. At least he’s honest enough to call himself a socialist.”

Bush: “They called me Veto Corleone … because I vetoed 2500 separate line-items in the budget.”

Cruz: “Chris I believe the American people are looking for a nominee to speak the truth.”

Carson: “I’m the only one to separate Siamese twins.”

The next Republican presidential debate will air on September 16, hosted by CNN. Will Donald Trump still be leading the pack? Will he even be a candidate by then? If Trump is still in it, should be another night of entertainment.

The Curtain Has Been Pulled On Fox News

August 9, 2015 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

a-ailes

I’ve often wondered, is there such a thing as a national Republican Party? If so, who is its leader? Certainly it is not that milquetoast Reince Priebus, head of the Republican National Committee (RNC), nor is it the dullard Mitch McConnell, Republican leader of the Senate, nor “the Tan Man,” John Boehner, speaker of the House.

For years I’ve been convinced Fox News was just the propaganda instrument of the Republican Party; a mouthpiece for disinformation and the promotion of Republican candidates and causes. After this week’s Republican presidential debate, it is clear to me Fox News is the Republican Party. And its leader is Fox News chairman, Roger Ailes. He is the Republican heavyweight. He is the man who calls the shots.

It was Ailes’ decision to limit the Republican presidential debate to the top ten candidates, of the seventeen running, as determined by an average of the top five national polls. When a stink was made about how this would adversely affect the excluded seven candidates, Fox News (Ailes) reluctantly decided to hold a pre-debate debate. A non prime-time kid’s table, if you will, for the unfortunate losers.

The problem was, except for the few candidates at the top of the polls, the poll numbers for the candidates at the lower end of the spectrum were all within the polls’ statistical margin of error! The pollsters all told Fox their polls were being improperly used: that there was no statistical difference between #10 Kaisch (2.8%) and #11 Perry (2.0%). The weakling Chairman Priebus, knowing the field of seventeen candidates needed whittling down, didn’t intercede and left it to Ailes to do the dirty work.

Despite what its name implies, Fox News is not, nor it has ever been, a legitimate news network. Ailes, himself, has admitted his beloved Fox News is really an entertainment medium. He sees his competition as TNT, USA and ESPN, not other news outlets.

Of course, gullible Fox News viewers think they are getting real news … you know, news that’s fair and balanced.

I guess after 17 years, a project begun by right-wing propagandist Rupert Murdoch, with the assistance of Republican media strategist Roger Ailes, it would only be natural for the enterprise to assume its earned status as Republican kingmaker.

Trump’s Secret Weapon Revealed

August 8, 2015 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

trump-hair

Funny thing about Trump… the more outrageous his statements, the more his supporters love him. The more offensive his language, the more his poll numbers rise. The more mainstream Republicans and the media criticize him, the more popular he gets.

For anyone else, calling Mexican immigrants “criminals, drug dealers and rapists” would be the end of a political career. For your average politician to say John McCain is “ not a war hero… because he was captured,” would cause a major backlash. For any other public figure to suggest Megyn Kelly of Fox News is a “bimbo,” would have women taking to the streets.

What is it about Trump? Do the laws of politics/nature not apply to him?

Finally, a team of forensic scientists has uncovered Trump’s secret weapon … his head of golden flax! Scientists have determined the “thing” on top of Trump’s head is actually a “Teflon shield,” repelling any criticism leveled his way. “He’s a modern day Samson, if you will,” observed Dr. Vincent Boombatz, “ his strength, and protection, comes from the hair.”

Now that scientists have uncovered Trump’s defense mechanism, it seems so clear in hindsight. Think about it …has Trump’s coif been seen anywhere else in the natural world? Some experts speculate it is some type of “bionic weave.”

John Gotti, an infamous New York gangster who worked his way up the criminal ladder to become head of the Gambino crime family, was euphemistically known as the “Teflon Don.” No matter how many charges were brought against him by law enforcement, nothing stuck.

The American public may today be looking at the “Teflon Don-ald.”

Fox News Ambush Backfires

August 7, 2015 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Anyone watching the Fox Republican presidential debate last night could see Fox’s agenda from the very first question. The candidates were asked which ones would not make a pledge to support whoever became the Republican nominee. Of course, only one hand went up … Trump’s. The geniuses at Fox knew this. Trump is the only Republican candidate to raise the issue of a third party candidacy.

Fox’s goal from the get go was to make Trump look foolish. But the idea to make him look like the selfish, egotistical, non-team player that he is, unfortunately for Fox and the RNC, backfired. Even non-Trump loyalists thought Trump was unfairly targeted. And while the debate audience booed him lustily, the viewing audience felt only sympathy. In fact, most polls following the debate showed Trump as the winner by large margins.

Here is an unedited thread from an article that appeared today on AOL:

gopisbest 2 hours ago

Trump proved tonight he is HIS OWN MAN, and the USA just got the chance of a lifetime to have a strong president who owes no one. Honest government. He deserves a landslide win.

Go Donald.
We have lost the United States, we need to reclaim it. Never back down.

I’m was staunch conservative republican and really like watching Fox news but after last night when that ******* **** Megan Kelly and that Liberal Chris Wallace deliberately went after Trump to shame him, embarrass and tried to dishonor him I will not be watching fox no more for the exception of Hannity and O’reilly. If I was Trump I would tell fox news and the republican party to **** off!

hkosrofian 2 hours ago

To start him off with the QUESTION THEY DID, IS DISGRACEFUL ,WITH THE ONLY PURPOSE TO SET THE TONE AND TRY TO PUT HIM IN THE WORST POSSIBLE LIGHT, SHAME ON FOX, AS I SAID THE MAIN STREAM MEDIA PICKS THE PRESIDENT AND THATS WHAT THERE TRYING TO DO…..

Trump must keep speaking his mind, we are sick of the media & the politically correct politicians we have in office. Lets get Trump he is not a PC guy and that’s what this country needs

sgt2b Chet1 hour ago

Yep, try running the country as a business for once, sure can’t hurt us anymore than we already have.

MARTY Chet40 minutes ago

The only way to reclaim our countrys greatness is to have a radical change, and the only one to do that is Trump. As the oath taken by many citizens, includeing the military, it mentions ” enemies both foreign and domestic ” . Our government is infested with DOMESTIC ENEMIES !

If Fox’s stunt turned off some of their viewers, great! If Fox’s ambush of Trump garners him more support, hooray!

Republican Presidential Debate – Trump Is Trump

August 6, 2015 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

It didn’t take long for The Donald to get booed. And booed heavily. The first question out of the gate showed Trump to be who he is…. a political opportunist out for himself. The candidates were asked to raise their hand if they would not pledge their support to whoever the Republican nominee turns out to be. Trump’s hand was the only one raised.

Trump would only disavow a third party candidacy if the Republican nominee is, well, Trump!

Trump did not help himself with the female vote when he wouldn’t apologize for the way he has referred to (disparaged) women in the past. To make matters worse, he dissed Megyn Kelly who asked him the question!

Will any of this diminish Trump’s support? Probably not. There is a certain core of conservative Republican voters who will stick with the man no matter what. The problem is Trump needed to increase his support. He failed miserably.

Which candidates helped their cause? The consensus seems to be they all fairly held their own. Many analysts believed Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Mike Huckabee did well enough to see a bump in their poll numbers.

John Kasich came across as the most “moderate” candidate when he spoke of his support for gay rights. How badly this will hurt him remains to be seen.

Stay tuned.

The Genius Of Bill Clinton

August 6, 2015 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

images-2

Adding fuel to the belief that Donald Trump’s candidacy is a secret Democratic plot, the Washington Post has reported that Trump conducted a secret conversation with Bill Clinton just days before announcing his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. No one knows for sure what the two men talked about, but if you’re a Republican conspiracy theorist, it probably went something like this:

Trump: “Hey Bill, what’s up dude?

Clinton: “Oh, the usual. Making a few million here, a few there. You know how it is.”

Trump: “Listen, I need a little advice. You know how I’m always threatening to run for president, right? Well, a strange thing is happening. I’m being told by my pollsters I got a good chance of  attracting a following this time around. What do you think?”

Clinton: “Wow, that’s messed up! But I got to tell you there might be gold here. If your pollsters are right, you might really be able to shake things up with that weak excuse of Republican candidates.”

Trump: “So true. Cruz, Huckabee, Perry, Fiorina … all losers. Give me a break!”

Clinton: ”You want my advice? Go with it! Should be good for a few laughs. It certainly will help Hill. How about this, you go total Tea Bag batshit on them? You know, say the things all those losers like Bush and Walker are thinking but are afraid to say. Stuff the low information, Fox News base will just eat up.”

Trump: “Yeah, I could put those weasels on the spot. They either attack me and piss off their base or let me slide and piss off everybody else. What do you think I should make my signature campaign issue?”

Clinton: “Well, the base has strong feelings on Mexican immigration. How about this… in your speech announcing your candidacy, you say Mexico is sending us their drug dealers, criminals and rapists?”

Trump: “There’s a reason why people call you the greatest political strategist alive. But isn’t that a little over the top?”

Clinton: “No way. In fact, I predict your poll numbers will jump with a comment like that!”

Trump: “Ok. I’m in for real this time. Should be fun for however long it lasts … a few weeks, a month?”

Clinton: “Great! I’ll tell Hill. She will just pee her pantsuit!”

Trump: “Funny Bill. Now is our tee time Sunday 8:30 or 9:30?”

Stand By Your Man – Palin Defends Trump

August 5, 2015 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

images-1

Sarah Palin, in a spirited defense of her political soulmate, Donald Trump, has stated that Trump’s rise to the top of national polls for Republican presidential nominee is no fluke. In an article written for the conservative Breitbart news site, Palin called the multi-billionaire “a man of the people.”

“No one understands the average Joe like Donald. That is why he has become the hero of so many people,” observed Palin. “He speaks their language. He tells it like it is. He feels their frustration with the political wimps that have run the Republican Party for so long.”

Donald Trump is tapping into “major populist grievances,” according to Palin. His candidacy is “a shot in the arm for ordinary Americans fed up with the predictable poll-tested blather of squishy milquetoast career politicians.” Palin predicted that Trump would continue to appeal to “ordinary Americans” despite what she described as a bludgeon of attacks from Republican elites, pundits and the media.

Some political observers have suggested Palin’s defense of Trump is motivated by her desire to solidify a spot in a Trump administration. Trump has indicated that the former Republican vice presidential candidate and Tea Party favorite would be a great fit for a high level cabinet job. Insiders have revealed Palin would be on a fast track to becoming our next Secretary of State or Attorney General.

“I’ll be rooting for Donald all the way this Thursday,” an excited Palin said about the upcoming Republican presidential debate. “A word salad or two might come out of his mouth but that won’t make a difference to Joe Six-Pack. It certainly hasn’t hurt me!”

We truly live in a strange political time. That Palin could label as “a man of the people” a multi-billionaire who rides around in limos, flies in his own jet, pals around with the rich and famous, without seeing the irony, is rich.
