Marianne Williamson Proves Why We All Need To Do Our Due Diligence

December 10, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Reprint from moronmajority.com

About one month ago, I wrote a satirical piece, “Trump Pardons Charles Manson.” I also reposted the article on Dailykos.com.

What was intended as a lighthearted jab at Trump’s expansive, and seemingly indiscriminate, use of his pardoning power has morphed into a major brouhaha and latest embarrassment for presidential candidate Marianne Williamson.

Not realizing the story was satire, Williamson tweeted:

“There is something deeply sinister about Trump pardoning Charles Manson, even posthumously. Dog whistles of the very worst possible kind…”

Williamson later apologized for the mistake and said that she was “glad to have been wrong,” but then deleted both the original tweet and the apology.

If only the self-help guru had done a simple Google search she would have discovered the story was in jest. Scopes.com correctly labeled the article as “satire.”

Williamson should have read the disclaimer on moronmajority.com, which reads, “This site is devoted to satire. If you believe any of the stuff you read here, don’t look now, but you probably belong to the group this site is named for.”

Let this be a teachable moment for one and all. If a story sounds preposterous … totally batsh*t crazy … it is probably fake news or well done satire.

Then again, in the age of Trump, where windmills cause cancer, can we say anything is utterly ludicrous?

Like Congress, Supremes Fall In Line

June 26, 2018 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Donald Trump is a wannabe dictator, we all know that. And he has been aided and abetted in his pursuit of absolute power by a feckless and subservient Congress.

Now we have the United States Supreme Court falling in line.

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court has upheld Trump’s Muslim travel ban. The basic rationale? Trump, as president, has the constitutional power to decide issues of national security. So when Trump said he was proposing his travel ban against mostly Muslim countries to protect the homeland, that was good enough for the five conservative members of the Court.

It didn’t matter that lower courts had struck down each and every iteration of Trump’s travel ban, the first of which was issued in January 2017. It didn’t concern the Supremes that each lower court found that the initial order, and each new version since, exceeded the president’s authority granted by Congress and was motivated by Trump’s prejudice against Muslims.

If Trump said it wasn’t about religion but national security, then that was just fine for the deferential justices. All evidence to the contrary be damned! It doesn’t matter that the man occupying the White House is a pathological liar.

We are living through dangerous times. It is obvious our two other supposed co-equal branches of government … legislative and judicial … are not going to challenge Trump’s power grab.

The only way to begin getting out of this mess is to flip Congress in November.

Of course today’s decision wound not have been possible but for Mitch McConnell’s unprecedented move to block President Obama from nominating a replacement on the Court after the unexpected death of Antonin Scalia.

Here’s a thought. What happens when Trump declares that, as president, it is his responsibility to protect all life, both born and unborn? What happens when il Duce proclaims all abortions illegal?

I’m afraid to think what this conservative court, thanks to the illegal seat occupied by Neil Gorsuch, will decide.

Republicans Pull Off Greatest Tax Heist In U.S. History … All In Plain View

December 2, 2017 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Today, fifty-one Republican senators voted, in the dark of night, to repay their wealthy benefactors by approving a “tax cut bill” that enriches the country’s millionaires and billionaires at the expense of everyone else.

In a rational universe, those fifty-one senators would have in effect signed their own death warrants. But we do not live in a world ruled by reason.

Here is a list of the fifty-one U.S. Senators who voted to take from the have-nots to give to the have-it-alls:

Lamar Alexander, Tenn

John Barrasso, Wyo.

John Boozman, Ark.
Richard M. Burr, N.C.
Thad Cochran, Miss.
John Cornyn, Tex.
Steve Daines, Mont.
Michael B. Enzi, Wyo.
Jeff Flake, Ariz.
Lindsey Graham, S.C.
Charles E. Grassley, Iowa
Orrin G. Hatch, Utah
James M. Inhofe, Okla.
Johnny Isakson, Ga.
Ron Johnson, Wis.
James Lankford, Okla.
John McCain, Ariz.
Mitch McConnell, Ky.
Rand Paul, Ky.
David Perdue, Ga.
Rob Portman, Ohio
Pat Roberts, Kan.
Michael Rounds, S.D.
Tim Scott, S.C.
Richard C. Shelby, Ala.
Luther Strange, Ala.
John Thune, S.D.
Thom Tillis, N.C.
Patrick J. Toomey, Pa.
Roger Wicker, Miss.
Todd Young, Ind.
Roy Blunt, Mo.
Shelley Moore Capito, W.Va.
Bill Cassidy, La.
Tom Cotton, Ark.
Michael D. Crapo, Idaho
Ted Cruz, Tex.
Joni Ernst, Iowa
Cory Gardner, Colo.
Dean Heller, Nev.
John Hoeven, N.D.
Mike Lee, Utah
Jerry Moran, Kan.
Lisa Murkowski, Alaska
Jim Risch, Idaho
Marco Rubio, Fla.
Ben Sasse, Neb.
Dan Sullivan, Alaska
Susan Collins, Me.
Deb Fischer, Neb.
John Kennedy, La.

The reality is that few of these senators, if any, will pay a political price. Their supporters won’t know how badly the falsely advertised “middle class tax cut” bill actually hurts them … if not immediately, then in the near future.

It’s unfortunate that the best news of the day (Flynn pleading guilty and flipping on Trump) is immediately followed by the Republican “reverse-Robin Hood” tax scam.

Trump: Flynn … Flynn Who?

December 1, 2017 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Today may be remembered as the day Trump went down for the count. Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations he had with the Russian ambassador (spy?) last December. Sources say Flynn is ready to finger his old boss.

While we have yet to hear from the Twitter-happy Trump about this bombshell development in the Mueller investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia, Ty Cobb, Trump’s attorney issued the following statement:

“Today, Michael Flynn, a former National Security Advisor at the White House for 25 days during the Trump Administration, and a former Obama administration official, entered a guilty plea to a single count of making a false statement to the FBI.

The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year. Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn. The conclusion of this phase of the Special Counsel’s work demonstrates again that the Special Counsel is moving with all deliberate speed and clears the way for a prompt and reasonable conclusion.”

Perhaps anticipating this day, Trump put out a statement in early May trying to distance himself from Flynn’s legal troubles. He blamed any problems with the retired three-star general on the Obama administration.  Trump tweeted Flynn was “given the highest security clearance by the Obama Administration – but the Fake News seldom likes talking about that.”

During a Fox News interview this past April, Trump blamed Obama for flaws in the Flynn vetting process. “So when he came into our administration, for a short period of time, he came in, he was already approved by the Obama administration and he had years left on that approval,” Trump said.

After Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, was indicted on charges stemming from Mueller’s investigation, he tried to downplay his connection with Manafort as well. Once again his attorney, Ty Cobb, issued a statement that emphasized the short amount of time Manafort acted as campaign manager.

“[Trump] likes and respects Mr. Manafort and appreciates the work he did for him during the three months he was with the campaign.”

Let’s see … Flynn, 25 days with the administration; Manafort only three months with the campaign? How could Trump possibly have had any real association with the two or know what they were up to with Russia?

Alls eyes are waiting for the King of Twitter to offer up some ridiculous and incredible statement.

As a famous bandleader used to say, “ And-a-one-and-a-two-and-a-three …”

Flounder’s Legacy … Laughter Is The Best Therapy

June 18, 2017 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

At a time when the news cycle is dominated by the continuing trainwreck otherwise known as the Trump presidency, it is with great sadness, but much deserved respect, that we carve a little space for the news of actor Stephen Furst’s passing.

The 63-year-old actor died on Friday from complications of diabetes.

Furst, of course, is best known for his career-defining role as Kent Dorfman in National Lampoon’s Animal House. The overweight “loser, ” and “real zero” was nicknamed “Flounder” by fellow Delta fraternity brother, John “Bluto” Blutarsky, played by John Belushi.

It seemed the lovable Flounder could do nothing right. When his brother Fred lent him his brand new Lincoln for the weekend, he was talked into letting a few of his older Delta House brothers use the car for a “road trip.” After the car is predictably wrecked, Delta’s loverboy and president, Eric “Otter” Stratton, played by Tim Matheson, tells Dorfman the cold honest truth. “You fu-ked up, you trusted us.”

It is at that point, when Flounder begins sobbing over what to tell Fred, that brother Bluto offers-up one of the most memorable lines in the entire movie. Shoving a six-pack into Flounder’s stomach, Bluto utters the immortal words: “My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.”

Perhaps one of the more repeated lines from the film is how Faber College’s Dean Wormer referred to Dorfman after informing him of his failing grades.

“Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son,” said Wormer, who went on to inform Flounder and a few of his fluncking Delta brothers that if they didn’t leave campus “Monday morning,”  the local draft board would be informed of their eligibility for military service. It was at that point Flounder threw up in front of Dean Wormer. No, as brother Donald “Boon” Schoenstein, played by Peter Reigert, reminded Dorfman … “you threw up on Dean Wormer.”

As Animal House aficionados know, neither Dorfman nor any of his screwball Delta brothers are expelled from Faber. We learn Flounder goes on to become a sensitivity trainer later in life.

In announcing his death, Furst’s family wrote:

To truly honor him, do not cry for the loss of Stephen Furst. But rather, enjoy memories of all the times he made you snicker, laugh, or even snort to your own embarrassment. He intensely believed that laugher is the best therapy, and he would want us to practice that now.

With all that is going on in our politics these days, laughter is needed more than ever.

R.I.P. Flounder.

VP Candidates Remind Women Roe v. Wade Is Very Much At Stake

October 4, 2016 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

694940094001_5156226527001_insult-driven-campaigns-pence-kaine-on-tone-of-2016-race

Tonight’s one and only debate between Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine will be talked about for a day or two … and then forgotten. There were no memorable zingers historians will quote years from now.

The best that can be said is that for most of the debate, over an array of issues, each candidate held his own. There were no outrageous gaffes from either candidate that could reflect badly on the person at the top of the ticket.

But towards the end of the debate, when each man of faith was asked how he juggles his religious beliefs and public service, viewers were treated to a stark difference between the two men.

Tim Kaine replied, “For me the hardest struggle in my faith life was the Catholic Church as against the death penalty.” Kaine went on to say when he ran for governor of Virginia, a capital punishment state, he promised to uphold the law and he did.

“It is really, really important that those of us who have deep faith lives don’t feel like we can just substitute our own views for everybody else in society,” said Kaine.

Mike Pence never answered the question asked him. But he did talk about his strong pro-life position.

“For me the sanctity of life proceeds out of the belief, that ancient principle, when God says before you were formed in the womb, I knew you,” said Pence. “My faith informs my life. I try and spend a little time on my knees each day.”

“But it all for me begins with cherishing the dignity, the worth, the value of every human life,” Pence added.

“It is not the role of the public servant to mandate that (their religious views) for everybody else,” Kaine replied. “We respect Roe v. Wade. Governor Pence wants to repeal Roe v. Wade.”

Putting it as simply as possible, Kaine said, “ That is the fundamental difference between a Clinton/Kaine ticket and a Trump/Pence ticket that wants to punish women who make that choice.”

Referring to abortion, Kaine asked Pence, “ Why don’t you trust women to make this choice for themselves?”

Pence did not answer that question either.

For a Trump campaign that is having a difficult time attracting more female voters, this exchange on abortion rights surely won’t help them. Women will be reminded that Roe v. Wade could be just one conservative Supreme Court justice away from being overturned.

Donald Trump’s favorite Supreme Court Justice? Clarence Thomas.

Trump Runs Out Of Gas During Home Stretch

September 26, 2016 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

rt_gty_clinton_trump2_cf_160923_1_12x5_1600

Donald Trump has attempted to make Hillary Clinton’s lack of stamina a major campaign issue. She’s weak, she’s sick, she’s doesn’t have the fortitude or endurance to be president of the United States.

Like a good long distance runner, Hillary laid back during the start and middle of the debate, then shifted into a gear even some Democrats doubted she possessed.

“I don’t believe Hillary has the stamina,” Trump claimed, as he once again sipped on his glass of water, a la Rubio.

As if anticipating Trump’s charge, Clinton replied, “ Well, as soon as he travels to 112 countries and negotiates a peace deal, a cease fire, a release of dissidents, an opening of new opportunities in nations around the world or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee, he can talk to me about stamina.”

The debate audience, breaking a major ground rule, erupted into applause.

There can be very little doubt that as the debate wore on, Clinton got stronger while Trump seemed to fade. It didn’t help Trump that the last debate topic was on national security, perhaps his weakest subject.

As he rambled on about NATO, Japan and North Korea, his answers became more disjointed and incoherent. After a great start, where Trump more or less held his own, he just couldn’t fake his way through complicated, thorny national security issues.

Of course, Trump supporters will claim their man won the debate while Hillary supporters will give her the thumbs up.

It’s unlikely many minds were changed after the 90-minute debate.

But among the roughly 10% of so-called “undecided voters,” many pundits are expecting to see a slight movement towards the “steady at the helm” Clinton.

Kudos to NBC’s Lester Holt. He did an admirable job moderating the debate and handling Trump’s many interjections. He simply let Trump be Trump.

One down, and two to go.

Obama Takes Down Trump, Passionately Embraces Hillary … Literally!

July 27, 2016 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

dncWednesday_2111469677990

On a night filled with raw, raucous enthusiasm and star power, the Democrats ended the third night of their national convention on a high note – President Obama’s speech in support of Hillary Clinton.

In typical Obama fashion, he commanded the room. The crowd of delegates at the Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, cheered and hollered as the President made his case for why his former Secretary of State needs to be our nation’s 45th president.

Perhaps the line of the night came when Obama said, “I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman, not me, not Bill, more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as President of the United States of America.”

In an obvious appeal to disappointed Bernie Sanders’ supporters, the president reminded them, “That even when you’re 100 percent right, getting things done requires compromise.”

The President didn’t hold back on his criticism of Republicans and their presidential nominee, Donald Trump.

Talking about the Republican National Convention, Obama said, “ … what we heard in Cleveland last week wasn’t particularly Republican – and it sure wasn’t conservative. What we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other, and turn away from the rest of the world. There were no serious solutions to pressing problems – just the fanning of resentment, and blame, and anger, and hate.”

The President spoke after a well-received speech from Sen. Tim Kaine, Hillary’s vice presidential pick, who followed Vice President Joe Biden’s rousing oratory.

But the highlight of the night? No, it did not have anything to do with speechmaking.

After President Obama ended his speech, Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance onto the stage. What followed was a truly amazing moment… the two hugged each other very closely and when she pulled away, Hillary looked into Obama’s eyes with what can only be described as googly eyes. They then continued their close embrace, with Hillary resting her head on Obama’s chest.

What we say on that stage was what Obama had been talking about – American greatness. That the two former rivals, in pursuit of the common good, could morph into soulmates was inspirational.

Eyes can talk. What Hillary’s seemed to be expressing was how deeply thankful she was for the President’s complete and unqualified support.

Bill Tries To Humanize Hill

July 26, 2016 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

635788889791246165-GettyImages-476991206

In a speech many observers are calling ”controversial,” Bill Clinton began his keynote speech in support of his wife’s candidacy by telling the story of their courtship years. “In the spring of 1971, I met a girl,” Clinton said. The reason some political analysts thought it was a risky move was because of the very good chance it might stir up some of the love story’s many rocky moments – Bill’s numerous betrayals and infidelities.

Nevertheless, the former president, in a long-winded narrative, went on to tell the story of Bill and Hill. He spoke of how they met at Yale Law School; how he couldn’t work up the nerve to ask her out; how he proposed marriage three times before she finally succumbed; how he bought a small house in Arkansas, which Hillary had had her eye on, that finally helped seal the deal.

Of course, Bill went on to talk about all the great things Hillary accomplished after law school and beyond. He talked about how she devoted herself to the public good and became the champion of ordinary people. He dwelled on her tenacity, her smarts, her organizational skills and her accomplishmensts. He said of his wife, “She’s the best darn change maker I’ve ever met in my entire life.”

While some political analysts, including Rachel Maddow, thought the start of Bill’s speech was odd and atypical for the gifted speaker, fellow MSNBC analyst, Joy Reid, thought it was perfect. It was Reid’s contention that Bill was targeting a specific demographic that tends to vote Republican – white, married women. The strategy was to humanize Hillary in the eyes of this voting group. What better way than to learn about the early years of perhaps the most famous and talked about couple in political history?

Bill Clinton ended his speech by pointing out how Republicans have portrayed Hillary as “a cartoon” and not a real person.

“They’re running against a cartoon. Cartoons are two-dimensional, they’re easy to absorb. Life in the real world is complicated and real change is hard, and a lot of people even think it’s boring,” said Bill Clinton. Not for Hillary the “change maker,” of course.

Bill Clinton is not only a master communicator but also a great political strategist.

Will Bill’s gambit of trying to humanize Hillary with their “love story”resonate among undecided voters or even some Hillary haters? This remains to be seen and won’t be known until after the convention and the start of targeted polling.

My bet is that the next possible “First Gentleman” got it right. We’re all suckers for love stories.

The Ineptitude In Cleveland Only Gets Worse

July 20, 2016 By John DeProspo 5 Comments

Ted-Cruz-800x430

What Republicans have proven over the first three days of their national convention is that they are adept at ineptness.

From not utilizing the right speakers for primetime speaking slots, to getting caught red handed plagiarizing other peoples words, the Republican National Convention has devolved into the “Amateur Hour.”

Tonight’s fiasco, however, takes the cake (well, at least for now).

Convention organizers allowed Ted Cruz to address the delegates. The RNC was not required to offer Donald Trump’s biggest primary opponent an opportunity to speak. But heck, they were short on speakers, why not?

Ted Cruz has yet to endorse Donald Trump for president. He has not encouraged his many supporters to get behind the Republican Party’s nominee. And after tonight’s speech, that is still the case.

Ted Cruz told convention delegates to “vote your conscience,” or in political parlance, vote for the candidate you prefer, not the one you’re pledged to support through the nominating system.

The convention delegates didn’t take kindly to Cruz’s advice. Shouts of “endorse … endorse” could be heard coming from the loud Republican crowd even over a chorus of boos. Yet Cruz stood his ground. No endorsement was offered.

Why Ted Cruz would be allowed to speak at the convention without a guarantee he would endorse the Republican presidential nominee is the question everyone is asking. The answer, however, may be as simple as “pure, unadulterated ineptitude.”

Instead of talking about the great speech given by the vice presidential nominee, Mike Pence, today’s news cycle will be devoted to stories of Ted Cruz’s selfishness and disloyalty to his party.

Cruz is probably one of the most hated, distrusted, and devious Republicans you will ever find. A man who only thinks in terms of his own political future. Former House Speaker, John Boehner, has called Cruz “Lucifer in the flesh” and a “miserable son of a bitch.”

Well, the evil one pulled a fast one on the RNC. It was payback time for all the nasty things Trump has said about Cruz and his wife. What better way to humiliate the man who saddled him with the nickname, “Lyin’ Ted?”

Thanks to the generosity of a disorganized political convention, tonight’s “political sabotage” will no doubt be referred to as Cruz’s first speech in his bid to becoming the 2020 Republican presidential nominee.
