Trump-Cohen Tape … What Giuliani Is Engaged In Is Not “Spin”

July 25, 2018 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Political spin is defined by Encyclopedia Britannia as “the attempt to control or influence communication in order to deliver one’s preferred message” …  it refers to “the sophisticated selling of a specific message that is heavily biased in favor of one’s own position and that employs maximum management of the media with the intention of maintaining or exerting control over the situation, often implying deception or manipulation.”

What Trump’s attorney, Rudolph Giuliani, is blasting out over the airwaves is not spin but outright lies.

Now that the Michael Cohen tape of his discussion with Trump, concerning how to deal with paying former Playboy model, Karen McDougal, has gone public, Giuliani is telling anyone who cares to hear his take on the recording that “it’s powerful exculpatory evidence.”

Okay. Good spin, I’ll give him that.

But how Trump wanted to pay McDougal, cash or check, is a whole other issue.

According to Giuliani, in the recording, Trump is saying to his fixer, Cohen, “Don’t pay with cash.”

Yet a careful review of the tape shows that Giuliani has gone beyond spin and into snow job territory.

While the audio is somewhat muffled, Trump can be heard saying to “pay with cash,” and Cohen says, “no, no, no.”

Does this really matter in the big scheme of things? Probably not. Yet it’s another example of team Trump lying to the American people.

Yesterday at a Veterans of Foreign Wars gathering in Kansas City, Trump went completely Orwellian when he told his audience not to believe their own eyes and ears.

“Just remember, what you are seeing and what you are reading is not what’s happening,” said Trump.

For many Trump supporters who are either too lazy or brainwashed to actually listen to the Cohen recording, this is exactly what they’ll believe. Fake news.

July 4, 2018 – “E Pluribus Unum?”

July 3, 2018 By John DeProspo 7 Comments

As we celebrate the second Fourth of July under the Trump administration, it is hard to ignore how much we are divided as a country.

“E Pluribus Unum,” our nation’s motto, literally means “Out of many, one.” Donald Trump seems intent, on a daily basis, to make a mockery out of the sentiment our Founding Father’s held so sacred.

Donald Trump does not even hide his disdain for national unity; for the notion that America is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities; that we are, and have always been, a nation of immigrants.

To Donald Trump, he is the president of his base… a group of mostly white nationalists who make up a minority of the American population. When Trump speaks about our nation, it is always “us” (his supporters) against “them” (everyone else).

In a recent interview with Maria Bartiromo, Trump was asked, “As the commander-in-chief, as the president of this great country, what can you do to bring us together?”

Without hesitation Trump replied, “Our people are so incredible,” making it quite clear his reference was limited to the people who voted for him: “Do you know, there’s probably never been a base in the history of politics in this country like my base. I hope the other side realizes that they better just take it easy.”

In what seems so long ago, another president had a different take on the question of national unity.

At a speech at the University of Indonesia back in 2010, President Obama said, “In the United States, our motto is E pluribus unum — out of many, one. Bhinneka Tunggal Ika — unity in diversity…our nations show that hundreds of millions who hold different beliefs can be united in freedom under one flag.”

And yet, as a preview of what we are seeing today, Obama’s simple statement caused an uproar among tea party U.S. House members—including then-U.S. Representative Mike Pence—who called for Obama to issue a correction stating: “By misrepresenting things as foundational as the Declaration of Independence and our national motto, you are not only doing a disservice to the people you represent, you are casting aside an integral part of American society.”

Obama was right … we can’t let Trumpism change that.

This Fourth, as you feast on burgers and franks, try to remember we once had a president who understood the source of America’s greatness. We just might survive the Trump nightmare to have such a president once again.

Democrats Don’t Understand The “McConnell Rule”

June 28, 2018 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Now that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has announced his retirement, Democrats are insisting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell abide by the same rationale he used to thwart President Obama from naming his own replacement to the Court in 2016. Namely, the Senate will not consider a Supreme Court nominee during an election year.

This unprecedented move by the Senate leader has come to be known as the “McConnell Rule.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called on McConnell to play by his own rule now that a vacancy will soon be taking place on the high court because of Kennedy’s departure. After all, 2018 is also an election year.

To do otherwise, said Schumer, would be the “height of hypocrisy.”

What Schumer and the rest of his fellow Democrats don’t understand is that there is only one true McConnell rule. It’s called, “I win, you lose.” McConnell has proven time and again he will do whatever it takes to win.

Democrats think they can shame McConnell into doing the right thing? They believe they can convince the evil genius to play fairly?

Without wasting a moment after Kennedy’s announcement, McConnell declared, “The Senate stands ready to fulfill its constitutional role by offering advice and consent on President Trump’s nominee to fill this vacancy. We will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy’s successor this fall.”

Good luck Chuck!

Dems just don’t get it. They are dealing with pure ruthlessness. Trying to use the “fair play” card with McConnell is as useless as pushing water uphill with a rake.

The best Democrats can hope for is that enough moderate Republicans block any extreme right-wing jurist Donald Trump is sure to nominate.

If history is any guide, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

As the front page of the NY Daily News aptly stated, “We’re F*#%’D.”

Barack Obama was right … “Elections have consequences.”

Just What Kind Of Dad Is Donald Trump?

June 16, 2018 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Donald Trump is a “great father”… according to Donald Trump.

Now that Father’s Day is here, let’s look at what Trump’s own family has said about the man who claims to be the best dad on earth. Is Trump’s self-assessment an exaggeration … or another outright lie?

According to an article in Proudemocrat.com, what Trump’s family had to say about his parenting skills “isn’t exactly heartwarming.”

Trump’s first wife, Ivana, confirmed he has “never changed a diaper” and was too busy “making the business” to play with his kids.

On the Ray D’Arcy show last year she said that Trump “loved the kids but he would not really be the dad who would take them for a stroll … go and play soccer with them or do something like that. He was always on the phone making the business.”

Marla Maples, Trump’s second wife, has said that when it came to raising their daughter, Tiffany, Trump was generous with his money – but not his time.

Don Jr. has been quoted as saying “My father could be more understanding of the things he doesn’t … understand. You Know? If I want to go fishing rather than play golf, it’s always like, ‘Why would you go fishing all weekend? I don’t get it! It’s crazy!’”

Eric Trump has confessed Trump wasn’t exactly the best father figure. “Donnie’s always been my friend, a mentor,” Eric said of his older brother in 2006. “In a way, he raised me. My father, I love and appreciate, but he always worked 24 hours a day.”

Ivanka Trump, no doubt Daddy’s favorite, said in a 2004 interview with New York Magazine, she and her siblings “were sort of bred to be competitive.”

Tiffany, Trump’s younger daughter, has probably had the least to do with her father. In November 2016, Trump told Fox & Friends how proud he was of all his adult kids, but “to a lesser extent … Tiffany.”

Perhaps nothing explains Trump’s view of fatherhood better than this excerpt from a 2005 interview with Howard Stern. Trump said he “won’t do anything to take care of” his kids. “I’ll supply funds and she’ll take care of the kids. It’s not like I’m gonna be walking the kids down Central Park. Marla used to say, ‘I can’t believe you’re not walking Tiffany down the street, you know in a carriage. Right, I’m gonna be walking down Fifth Avenue with a baby in a carriage. It just didn’t work.’”

There you have it. Being a good father for the man currently occupying the White House is all about “supplying funds” to your kids.

Happy Father’s day to all the “real” dads out there.

Trump Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize … Seriously!

May 3, 2018 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Proving once again that satire is no longer possible in the Age of Trump, a group of House Republicans has formally nominated Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize because of his role in solving the North Korean nuclear problem.

The fact that the North Korean “nuclear problem” has not been “solved” did not seem to faze the 18 very conservative Congressional supporters who endorsed the idea.

Rep. Luke Messer, R-Ind., made the suggestion in a letter Wednesday sent to members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Granted the rules for nominating someone for a peace prize are relatively loose, but come on!

Trump is the same guy who just recently ordered American bombing in Syria.

Trump is the same guy who wants to back out of the Iran nuclear agreement.

Trump is the same guy who wants to keep Muslims out of the country.

Trump is the same guy who called Haiti and African countries “shitholes.”

Trump is the same guy who wants more American nuclear weapons.

If a lasting peace can be brought to the Korean peninsula and North Korea gives up it nuclear weapons, then yes, Trump may be worthy of having bumbled and stumbled his way into receiving the prestigious award.

But anyone who knows a thing or two about North Korean understands how remote is such a possibility.

“The United States’ diplomatic goal – the denuclearization of North Korea in the near future – is far beyond what is realistically achievable,” warns James Acton of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. In a worst-case scenario, according to Acton, a failed negotiation could even act as “prelude to war” as tensions would invariably escalate in the aftermath.

Not only is talk of Trump and Nobel Peace Prize in the same sentence way premature, it is also ludicrous.

Perhaps all this buzz of Trump receiving the Nobel Peace Prize has something to do with his predecessor receiving the prize his first year in office. Ya think?

Paul Ryan … Shoo-in For Father Of The Year

April 12, 2018 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

It is a rare thing for a man to give up power at the height of his career. Yet Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House, has done just that.

Yesterday, the 10-term congressman from Wisconsin called it quits. He will not be seeking reelection this November.

Ryan told a group of reporters he is stepping down from his position as top Republican in the House, one that puts him second in line to the presidency, to spend more time with his kids.

Women have been facing the push-pull of career versus family ever since they entered the work place. Ryan is that exceptional male who has undoubtedly felt that same internal conflict and has decided to put the needs of his family first.

What makes Ryan’s decision so praiseworthy is that he is leaving congress before fulfilling his lifelong dream of completely dismantling the safely net put in place by the New Deal and the Great Society.

Yes, he did get passed his big tax giveaway to millionaires and corporations, but that was always secondary to eliminating Medicare and Social Security, as we know them.

Ryan is setting a good example for other powerful men to stop and smell the roses. What good is power and wealth when they come at the expense of raising great, well-adjusted kids? I’m guessing Ryan didn’t want to be a “Trump” in that regard.

Sure, Ryan may look back with regret at all he gave up after checking one too many homework assignments or one too many car pools to soccer practice.

But Ryan must know, like so many women who have sacrificed their careers to be with their children, your kids are only young once. The pride and satisfaction of raising fine upstanding citizens cannot be overstated.

So Elizabeth (16), Charles (15) and Samuel (13), count yourselves among the lucky ones who will now have their dad always around as you wade through those awkward teenage years.

Many are comparing Ryan’s incredible decision to leave politics to that of Little Richard who quit rock & roll at the height of his popularity in the late 50’s, to attend Bible school.

Sir, the country could not be happier with your decision.

Evangelicals Don’t Care If Trump Knew Stormy “In The Biblical Sense”

March 26, 2018 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Evangelicals used to stand for something …“family values” and good old-fashioned “Christian morality.” Nowadays, not so much.

Their full-throttled support of the sexual deviant currently occupying the White House has taken care of all that. If anything, evangelicalism is today more aptly associated with good old-fashioned hypocrisy.

Evangelicals don’t care about Stormy Daniels, or Karen McDougal, or any other woman Donald Trump may have had an extramarital affair with.

Michael Avenatti, Stormy Daniels’ lawyer, recently revealed six other women claiming to have had sex with Donald Trump have contacted him.

Yet none of this seems to bother all those self-proclaimed pious conservative Christians who expressed righteous indignation over the dalliances of another White House inhabitant, one William Jefferson Clinton.

To be fair, some prominent evangelical leaders have admitted they are no longer tied to a specific set of doctrinal beliefs.

Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, has made it clear that American evangelicalism is no longer about doctrine, at least not as much as it is about politics.

Evangelical Christians, said Perkins in an interview with Politico, “were tired of being kicked around by Barack Obama and his leftists. And I think they are finally glad that there’s somebody on the playground that is willing to punch the bully.” Perkins added, “Look, Christianity is not all about being a welcome mat which people can just stomp their feet on.”

The jig is up folks. Evangelicals are all about power and revenge. They do not care who their champion is or what he’s done as long as he can lead them to their earthly Promised Land.

The irony, of course, is that Trump is probably the least religious person you’ll ever find.

Trump is a user of people. He is a user of women. He is a user of the self-pitying religious right who now feel more empowered to push their beliefs and Stone Age agenda on the rest of the country.

Even With White House Walls Closing In, It’s Business As Usual For Trump

March 3, 2018 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

It’s official. Donald Trump is running for reelection.

This past Tuesday, Trump announced his pick for 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale. On Saturday, Trump is scheduled to visit his golf resort, Mar-a-Lago, for some good old-fashioned fundraising … a luncheon with tickets ranging from $2,700 all the way to a VIP package that includes a meal and photo with Trump for those who bundle $50,000 in contributions.

So, despite FBI Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller breathing down his neck, Trump is planning his next four-year term and out raising the big bucks.

Donald Trump, the former casino magnate, must not be a betting man. If he were, he’d realize the odds of his reelection aren’t very promising.

The Ireland-based gambling website Paddy Power thinks it’s highly unlikely Trump lasts his first term in office without being impeached. The odds are currently 4-7 that Trump is impeached before Inauguration Day 2021. To put that in perspective, oddsmakers at Paddy Power think it’s nearly twice as likely Trump will be impeached as it is that he will serve four years in office.

But Trump is a New Yorker. And what are New Yorkers famous for?

Chutzpah.

For you non-New Yorkers, chutzpah is a Yiddish term meaning extreme self-confidence or, as Leo Rosten in The Joys of Yiddish defines it: “gall, brazen nerve, effrontery, incredible ‘guts’.”

One thing’s for sure, the man who doesn’t like to read, will never see the writing on the wall. It’s damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

The man whose ego is consistently stroked by Fox News believes he is the greatest president of all time. Why wouldn’t he run for, and expect to win, reelection? And the Russia thing? It’s a hoax, Sean said so.

That polls show he is the least popular first-year president in modern U.S. history doesn’t register with Trump. It’s all fake news, right?

Oh, one of the side effects of chutzpah? Severe delusions … as in the kid who is on trial for murdering his parents but begs the judge for mercy because he is now an orphan!

Will Enough Finally Be Enough This Time?

February 25, 2018 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

It’s so easy to be cynical, especially when it comes to gun safety legislation.

If the deaths of innocent six and seven-year-olds couldn’t move the needle on enacting common sense gun regulations, nothing will. At least that was the mantra up until the Parkland Florida mass shooting.

Call me a crazy optimist, but I sense something different this time around. There is a sense of outrage and disgust that, I believe, will last long after the latest gun tragedy is no longer headline news.

In a new CNN/SSRS poll taken in the week after the horrific massacre at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, nearly three quarters of respondents said they favored stricter gun laws. CNN reports that the mind-boggling results suggest that support for more gun control in America is at its highest level since 1993.

CNN goes on to say:

Overall, 70% now say they back stricter gun laws, up from 52% who said so in an October poll not long after a mass shooting in Las Vegas killed 58 people. Just 27% oppose stricter laws.  Bumps in support for tighter laws following mass shootings have rarely lasted, but they have also rarely been as large as the shift seen in this poll.

What is different about the latest mass shooting and prior massacres is they didn’t have the survivors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School!

These fearless, and articulate, kids are not going to let their ordeal be swept under the rug by the National Rifle Association and its apologists. The gun group that usually plays offense after similar tragedies is suddenly finding itself on defense.

Americans of all political persuasions are pushing companies to cut ties with the powerful gun lobby. Gun-reform activists are targeting not weapons makers, but banks, rental car agencies, airlines, insurers and other companies with ties to the NRA.

And the new tactic is working!

“Americans have had it,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a group that calls for gun law reform. “This feels like a different energy level,” she added.

The battle to defeat the NRA will be difficult and long, but it feels to me … and to many others … we may have finally turned the corner towards enacting some common sense gun regulations.

There actually may come a day when an “A” from the NRA will no longer be seen as a badge of honor by politicians, but one of shame.

For A Politician, An “A” From The NRA Needs To Be Seen As The “Kiss Of Death”

February 16, 2018 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Another brutal, senseless mass shooting at an American school. In other words, welcome to Wednesday.

Before we once again fall into the predictable cycle of anger and despair, let’s not let it happen. Before we think there is nothing that can be done to curb gun violence in this country, let’s think again. Before we give up on politicians coming up with sensible gun safety legislation, let’s remember, we, the voters, hold the ultimate power in our great democracy.

The answer to Congress passing common sense gun legislation is as simple as giving our votes to only those politicians who are committed to voting for gun safety laws. We need to become one–issue voters much like conservative Christians and abortion.

Who are such politicians?

Thanks to the NRA and its rating system of all politicians, the answer is staring us right in the face. Do not vote for any politician with an “A” or “B” rating; give thought to any politician with a “C” rating; and vote for any politician with a “D” or “F” rating.

An “A” from the NRA needs to be seen as disqualification from holding public office, not as a badge of honor. An “A” from the NRA needs to be associated with “a” as in “accomplice” to death and violence. A high mark from the NRA needs to be viewed as a low grade in human decency.

The NRA has a website where you can look up a politician’s rating … but you have to pay for it! You may have to do some legwork to find out a politician’s NRA score.

The Washington Post put out an article today that sheds light on the NRA’s grading system and includes some information on the performance (shame) level of U.S. Senators.

It is way past time to throw out the greedy cowards occupying our halls of power.

We, the people, have had enough. Mr. “Bought-and-paid-for-politician-in-the-pocket-of-the-NRA,” your time has come. My God have mercy on your pathetic, wretched rotten soul.
