Could Trump Make His Intentions Any Clearer?

October 13, 2016 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

maxresdefault

Sorry, folks, but I must indulge in a little of that Trumpian “I told you so.” You see, I told you so!

As readers of this page know, it has been my belief all along that Trump’s “run” for the presidency has been a complete charade. A con job from the ultimate con man. Trump never wanted to trade his gilded Fifth Avenue penthouse for the relatively spartan White House.

While many analysts thought Trump would surely pivot from his “primary election mode” to a “general election mode” once he secured his party’s nomination, I kept saying “no way Jose.” And to the utter consternation of the Republican establishment, the pivot never came. The nastiness Trump exhibited during the primary only increased once Trump became the Republican Party’s presidential nominee.

The irrefutable proof of this came last week during the second presidential debate. With sinking poll numbers everywhere, Chef Trump skipped over the Caesar salad appetizer and went straight to a giant serving of red meat. Trump promised his hungry base the first thing he would do if elected president would be to jail Hillary. Oh how those “lock her up” supporters savored every bite!

Now that even the slightest pretence of winning the presidency is done with, Trump has promised to go nuclear against all his enemies. He has declared war not only on Hillary and Bill Clinton, but also on the media and his own party. He has told House Speaker Paul Ryan to go “f” himself after he stated he would no longer defend or campaign for the Republican presidential nominee.

Kamikaze Trump recently tweeted, “It is so nice that the shackles have been taken off me and I can now fight for America the way I want to,” instigating a full scale civil war within the Republican Party… less than four weeks before the election.

This will get really ugly, folks.

Trump’s game plan is now abundantly clear. Far from trying to broaden his appeal, he will be solidifying his hold on a large segment of Americans who think he is the second coming of Christ.

Look for Trump, and his campaign guru, former Breitbart boss Stephen Bannon, to stoke more hatred among the ready-made audience for his next business venture. Could it be a Trump cable empire to rival Fox News? Or an online right wing media outlet in the mold of Huffington Post? Or might he even have the discipline to form a third party for his rabid base (unlikely)?

The only question remaining is will Trump merely lose to Clinton or get annihilated?

Either way, it won’t matter to Trump. He wins. The system is rigged against him, right? His angry base will no doubt buy this lie as they have bought every kind of flimflam snake oil he has peddled.

Whatever the end game, Trump will come out of this political debacle smelling like a rose with a few extra dollars in his pocket. For The Donald, it has always been about making money off the misfortune of others having the bad sense of trusting him. That he has caused serious harm to our people, our nation and it’s political institutions, well that’s just the cost of doing business. It has worked great for Fox News and all those other conservative media outlets!

For Trump, it is not about party over country but himself over all else.

Does Trump Have The “Midas Touch” … Or The “Sadim Touch?”

October 11, 2016 By John DeProspo 3 Comments

41633b14-9e42-11e3-b646-001c23dcdfb5_02

In Greek mythology, everything King Midas touched turned into gold. We call this the “Midas Touch.” But there is another kind of magical power which is the opposite of this great feat … it’s called the “Sadim Touch,” where everything that’s touched turns into #!#! … well, you get the idea.

For the curious, Sadim is the reverse spelling of Midas.

Donald Trump has sold himself as the man with the ability to be successful at whatever he attempts. Making money just darn comes naturally to the man! Whatever he touches, we are told, turns out benefitting all involved. Most of Trump’s avid supporters believe he is the candidate with the “Midas Touch” who will bring prosperity (winning) to a great many struggling Americans.

But a close look at Trump’s business record shows his touch is anything but golden.

Trump has the “Sadim Touch.”

Take Trump’s four business bankruptcies. All involved casinos where the rule is “the house never loses.” Or how about these business busts: Trump Steaks; Trump Airlines; Trump Vodka; Trump Mortgage; Trump Magazine; Trump University; Trump The Game; GoTrump.com.

We just recently learned Trump took a nearly one billion dollar loss in 1995. This is the “Sadim Touch” on steroids!

While everything Trump touches seems to turn to #!#!, he, nevertheless, usually does well for himself. His secret? OPM. Always use other people’s money. Never put your own greenbacks at risk.

It looks as if Trump’s greatest reverse-Midas touch is about to unfold before our eyes.

Donald Trump is on track to accomplish what Democrats for decades have been unable to do … bury the GOP.

There is a civil war brewing within the Republican ranks. Members are turning against one another. With each day comes a new GOP politician renouncing his or her party’s presidential nominee. Even the highest elected Republican official, House Speaker Paul Ryan, has said he can no longer defend Trump and has green-lighted his party members to do whatever they think is best for their political futures.

It’s every man and woman for themselves!

The Republican game plan now is to try to hold their majorities in the Senate and in the House. The White House, they painfully realize, is a lost cause.

The GOP elites rolled the dice with Trump and are now stuck with an unelectable candidate. What becomes of the Republican Party is anybody’s guess. It is certainly not the concern of one Donald J. Trump.

We do not know Trump’s end game but it is abundantly clear by now that it is not to win the general election. Trump is doing all he can to shore up his base by continuing to feed them red meat (Jail Hillary!). Trump knows he needs them stoked for his next venture. Could we see a Trump media empire? Or a Trump third party?

While Trump has worked his “Sadim Touch” on the Grand Old Party, you can bet he will come out of this latest disaster smelling like a rose. One way or another, he will make money for himself.

For all the man with the “Sadim Touch” has done, and continues to do, for Democrats, they will forever be grateful.

Trump’s Lewd Remarks … Is Anyone Really Surprised?

October 8, 2016 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

https-blueprint-api-production-s3-amazonaws-com-uploads-card-image-239685-c2ec013522b143878c844c5be35ebd97

Yesterday, the nation was hit with a tidal wave … Donald Trump’s 2005 audio of vulgar, sexist comments made during a taping of Access Hollywood. The Republican presidential candidate boasted to the show’s host, Billy Bush, he could do anything he wants to women because he is a star. He could even “grab them by the p_ _ _y” with impunity.

As shocking as the tape turned out to be, is any one really surprised?

Trump has demonstrated his disdain and disrespect for woman throughout his adult life. To Trump, women are mere objects that exist to satisfy his personal pleasure. And they must meet his high standards of beauty! If a woman is not a “10,” he’s not interested. He simply tosses those “losers” into the garbage heap of “dogs, fat pigs and slobs.”

No, no one who has paid any attention to Trump’s history of treating women is surprised.

Republican establishment types are outraged over the latest development. Some good Christian Republicans, like Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz, are unendorsing Trump.

“I’m out,” said Chaffetz on Fox News. “I can no longer in good conscience endorse this person for president. It is some of the most abhorrent and offensive comments that you can possibly imagine.”

Chaffetz is not the first, nor will he be the last, Republican to jump ship.

The Hollywood Access video is forcing the hands of many Republicans who have tired to straddle the fence … criticizing Trump’s rhetoric on one hand, while promising to vote for their party’s nominee on the other.

Tomorrow night we will be treated to “must see TV.” The second presidential debate will be held at Washington University in St. Louis. There is little doubt Trump’s “sex” audio will be a topic of discussion. How Trump handles the situation may be the difference between a simple loss in November and a landslide victory for Clinton.

The dye is set. Trump is done. He will not be able to talk or bully his way out of this predicament. Any other candidate with an ounce of self-respect would skip the debate or drop out of the race. But, hey, we’re talking about Trump here!

Many voters, especially the undecided, are finally seeing Trump for what he is: the most crass, sexist and racist candidate to earn the nomination of a major party in American history.

Round Two For Trump… Second Verse Same As The First?

October 7, 2016 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

image

The second presidential debate will be held this Sunday at Washington University in St. Louis.

While Trump and his surrogates tried to spin his first debate encounter with Hillary Clinton as a win, the consensus among analysts was that he got his clock cleaned. Not only did his poll numbers sink nationally, but he lost ground in many of the key battleground states he needs to win to get to the 270 electoral votes necessary to reach the White House.

Trump’s handlers are spreading the line that he will be a more prepared, polished debater this time around. Advice on how he can turn things around is popping up everywhere.

“Look and act calm,” advised Jo-Renee Formicola, a political science professor at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. “Be a gentleman. Smile.”

Republican pollster Frank Luntz believes that during the town-hall debate, Trump “needs to empathize and sympathize with the voters and forget that Clinton is standing next to him.”

There is a decent chance we may be treated to a more presidential performance by Trump in round two (well, at least temporarily!). Maybe Trump can replicate the smooth performance his running mate, Mike Pence, gave during the vice presidential debate earlier this week?

But Trump has shown that against a seasoned debater like Hillary Clinton, he will undoubtedly revert to form once she starts getting under his thin skin. Look for Trump to go “off script” and make some wild statements or crazy accusations against Clinton … the kind that will send some of his campaign staff packing!

Beyond the misplaced optimism of Trump’s people, some political observers are clearly delusional.

“He’s proven to be a quick study during the campaign and reports of Trump’s debate obituary could be greatly exaggerated,” said Aaron Kall, director of debate at the University of Michigan.

Kall noted that President Obama got negative reviews after his first debate against Mitt Romney in 2012, but then rallied in a town hall debate to change the trajectory of the race.

There is only one small problem with this Romney/Obama analogy.

In a memorable vice presidential debate between Lloyd Bentsen and Dan Quayle, the Democratic nominee told his opponent, after he had likened himself to JFK, “Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.”

It is safe to say, Donald Trump is no Barack Obama.

The second verse could be worse than the first.

This Time, VP Debate May be Worth The Watch

October 3, 2016 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

lloyd-bentsen-dan-quayle-vice-presidential-debate-oct-5-1988-8x6

The one, and only, vice presidential debate will be held tomorrow at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.

While vice presidential debates are normally as exciting as watching paint dry on a wall and as useless as an ejection seat in a helicopter, this debate between Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine could prove the exception to the rule.

Historically, vice presidential debates don’t move the needle much. A review of voter preferences before and after the eight vice presidential debates held between 1976 and 2008 “reveals that past vice presidential showdowns have had almost no influence,” a Gallup analysis found.

But it is safe to say there is nothing normal about this year’s presidential contest.

If for no other reason, it will be fun to watch the deeply religious Mike Pence defend someone being labeled the most vile, despicable and morally bereft candidate ever to seek the White House.

Mike Pence, if you recall, is the Indiana governor who signed one of the nation’s most odious anti-LGBT bills into law. All in the name of “religious freedom,” of course!

If we’re lucky, we may be treated to Lloyd Bentsen moment.

For all those too young to remember, Lloyd Bentsen was Michael Dukakis’s running mate in 1988. During the vice presidential debate with George H. W. Bush’s VP pick, Dan Quayle, Bentsen delivered one of the most memorable zingers of all time.

The young, unseasoned Dan Quayle foolishly likened his political experience to that of John F. Kennedy in one of his answers.

Not skipping a beat, Bentsen brilliantly retorted,” “I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.”

Proving that vice presidential debates do not amount to a hill of beans, even Bentsen’s winning performance against the dim-witted Quayle could not help Dukakis win the election.

If the Clinton campaign has any sense, it will advise Kaine to speak as little as possible. Let Pence try to defend the indefensible.

Eric Trump Praises His Dad For Not Acting Like A Dirtbag … For Once

September 29, 2016 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

ap_eric_trump_160317_12x5_1600

Eric Trump lauded his father for having the “courage” not to get into the gutter during last Monday’s first presidential debate.

Some kids will never forget when their dad taught them to throw a baseball or catch a football but at age 32, Eric Trump will “always remember” when is father so bravely refrained from mentioning former President Bill Clinton’s infidelity during the presidential debate.

Said Trump’s third child, “I mean, he very well could’ve looked down — and he said it when he came off the debate stage, ‘I wasn’t gonna respond to that question because I saw Chelsea [Clinton] in the front row and I just wasn’t gonna go there out of respect for her.’ That was a big moment for me and probably will actually become … something I’ll always remember.”

What made the moment so memorable to Trump’s last child with Ivana Trump was the shear fortitude it must have taken for his father to break character and not to be his usual disrespectful self.

The young Trump said he thought it took “a lot of courage in so many regards” for his father to take “the high road” instead of retaliating against Hillary Clinton when she attacked him for his past poor treatment of women. “I’m really proud of him for doing that,” said Trump’s second son.

I wonder if all that praise will go out the window after the second presidential debate.

Donald Trump has threatened to change tactics for the upcoming debates. The Republican presidential candidate told Fox News Tuesday morning he “may hit her harder” at the next debate, though he didn’t provide specifics.

In December, Trump told TODAY that Bill Clinton’s infidelity would be “fair game” for him to bring up if the Clinton family accused him of being awful to women.

“There was certainly a lot of abuse of women,” Trump said of Bill Clinton’s time in office. “You look at whether it’s Monica Lewinsky or Paula Jones or many of them. That certainly will be fair game. Certainly if they play the woman’s card with respect to me, that will be fair game.”

While Eric Trump may be proud of his father for temporarily taking the high road, this whole issue of marital infidelity is one that Trump himself is very familiar with.

Perhaps it wasn’t “courage” that prevented Trump from attacking Hillary for her husband’s cheating (as if that has any bearing on her ability to be an effective leader) but knowing the well-prepared Hillary would have been ready to hit him back with all his many well-publicized “indiscretions.”

Donald Trump Too Smart To Pay Taxes À La Leona Helmsley?

September 28, 2016 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

leona_0

In what was arguably the most surreal moment during Monday night’s first presidential debate, Donald Trump, in effect, admitted to not paying taxes.

The well-prepared Hillary Clinton knew the moderator, Lester Holt, would bring up the issue of Trump’s returns and she was ready to pounce.

After Trump repeated his stock answer that he cannot release his returns while under IRS audit, Clinton said, “… maybe he doesn’t want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he’s paid nothing in federal taxes, because the only years that anybody’s ever seen were a couple of years when he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license, and they showed he didn’t pay any federal income tax.”

At that point, Trump just couldn’t help being Trump. He had to get a word in edgewise.

“That makes me smart,” interjected the Republican presidential candidate.

But he wasn’t finished.

Clinton went on to add, “So if he’s paid zero, that means zero for troops, zero for vets, zero for schools or health. And I think probably he’s not all that enthusiastic about having the rest of our country see what the real reasons are, because it must be something really important, even terrible, that he’s trying to hide.”

Clinton speculated, “and maybe because you haven’t paid any federal income tax for a lot of years.”

Trump, well-known for doubling down on his blunders, reinforced the belief he does not pay taxes by implying such a civic duty is a waste.

“It would be squandered, too, believe me,” said the purported billionaire.

Donald Trump brings to mind another flamboyant New York real estate developer who years ago was convicted of tax evasion, Leona Helmsley. Known as the “Queen of Mean,” she was notorious for stiffing her employees and contractors. A woman of immense wealth, she took pleasure in “nickeling and diming” just about anyone, from her housemaid to major construction companies. But her greatest joy, of course, was stiffing the U.S. Treasury Department. She will forever be remembered as having bragged, “Only little people pay taxes.”

Leona Helmsley was convicted and received a 16 year sentence. However, she was required to serve only 19 months in prison and two months under house arrest.

Why the media hasn’t made Trump’s admission of possible tax evasion a bigger story is hard to understand. In a normal world, a politician who refuses to release his tax returns and brags about being too smart to pay taxes would be the target of a criminal investigation and not be one step away from becoming the chief executive of the land.

Monday Night Football … Or First Presidential Debate?

September 22, 2016 By John DeProspo 5 Comments

monday-night-footballtrumpclinton3

This coming Monday, September 26, the first presidential debate will take place at Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York. Americans will get to see the Democrat, Hillary Clinton, go mano a mano against the Republican, Donald Trump.

Well, that is what everyone was expecting until debate moderator, Lester Holt, announced the three debate topics he will be covering during the 90-minute event: (1) America’s Direction, (2) Achieving Prosperity and (3) Securing America.

Seriously? Could you come up with more vague or esoteric topics?

Why not just give the candidates paper and pen and ask for an essay on how they spent their summer vacation!

Each one of the subject areas leaves so much room for BS and allows the candidates to just offer up talking points that the event might just turn into one giant snooze fest.

This is made even more likely by having the mild-mannered moderator, Lester Holt, running the show. Don’t expect him to be tough on the candidates. It’s just not his style. Perhaps this was the price NBC had to pay to make Trump happy. It is a well-known fact Trump and Holt have been friends for years.

The Commission on Presidential Debates, a bipartisan organization that manages the events, has clearly dropped the ball, not only by picking the milquetoast Holt, but by not having a better debate format.

I’m afraid if you want two adversaries going at it with all they’ve got, you will have to opt for Monday Night Football on ESPN. If you want drama and excitement, the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints present a compelling matchup.

The Issue Of Trump’s Tax Returns Needs To Be Front And Center In Presidential Debates

September 20, 2016 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

President Richard Nixon gestures sternly during a press conference in Washington in 1973. (AP Photo)

Richard Nixon’s infamous 1973 quote, “People have got to know whether or not their president is a crook” applies equally as well to today’s presidential politics.

In next week’s first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, if moderator, Lester Holt, does not press Trump on his hidden tax returns, Clinton needs to be ready to jump all over the issue.

Taking a page from the Republican playbook, where every Hillary question is just an opportunity to bring up “Benghazi” and “emails,” Clinton needs to insert the words ”Trump’s tax returns” into as many answers as she can.

Clinton needs to paint Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns as a disqualifying act for office.

Every Democratic and Republican candidate for president has released his or her personal tax returns since 1976. Trump’s own running mate Mike Pence has made 10 years of his tax returns public.

Hillary and Bill Clinton have continuously released their tax returns since 1977.

The issue of Trump’s returns is not even a partisan topic! Sixty-two percent of Republican voters want to see Trump release his tax returns, according to a Quinnipiac University poll in August (91% of Democrats and 66% of Independents say the same thing).

Without releasing his tax returns, Trump is showing his disdain for the American voter. He leaves too many questions unanswered about his wealth, his tax rate, his charitable donations and where he gets his funding for his real estate deals.

While the media has allowed Trump to keep insisting he cannot release his returns while being audited by the IRS, this is simply not true. The law does not prevent anyone from releasing their tax returns while under audit. In any event, Trump’s campaign confirmed to CNN that the GOP candidate is not under audit for 2008 or earlier. Trump could release those returns. But so far, he has not.

Hillary needs to remind the American voter of Nixon’s statement. She needs to inform the general public that, yes, even Tricky Dick released his tax returns while under IRS audit.

There’s nothing preventing Trump from releasing his tax returns right now. Not the IRS, not the law, not even precedent. The American people have a right to know if one of the two major presidential candidates is an actual crook, and not a bogus one like “Crooked Hillary.”

Why It’s Almost Impossible To Fact Check Donald Trump

September 13, 2016 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

2765541278_a18fe5606a_b-282avmz

As I reported on this site not too long ago, Fact Checkers have shown that only 9% of what comes out of Trump’s mouth is true or mostly true. (If Prevaricating Were An Olympic Sport, Trump Wins Gold, Hands Down)

With numbers like that it is easy to see why the media is having a hard time calling out Trump on his my “equivocations and prevarications.” It’s like the game Whack-a- Mole … as soon as one lie is beaten back, three more pop up.

I actually took pity on poor Matt Lauer as he “moderated” the first ever Commander-in-Chief forum last week. Lauer got a lot of heat from almost every corner of the media world for not fact checking Trump. But with lies coming at a fast and furious pace, Lauer never had a chance.

Matt Lauer’s performance raises a fundamental question: is it the responsibility of the moderator to fact check a candidate?

Chris Wallace of Fox News will be moderating the third and final debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. He believes it is not the moderator’s place to call out a candidate on what he himself knows to be a lie.

“That’s not my job,“ said Wallace. “I do not believe that it’s my job to be a truth squad. It’s up to the other person to catch them on that.”

As much as I hate to say this, Wallace is right. In a debate setting, the moderator’s job is not to call out a candidate’s lying. It is his or her job to be a neutral referee: one who decides which questions to ask, makes sure candidates don’t go over their time, and keeps the conversation moving. That’s it.

The responsibility for correcting blatant falsehoods falls on the other candidate. If he or she fails to recognize the lie in real-time, the faux pas is not necessarily fatal. The odds are great that their campaign, professional fact-checkers, and reporters will catch the fabrication and blast it out on social media in the blink of an eye.

Matt Lauer’s questioning of Trump came not as part of a debate but as a set of separate interviews with the two presidential candidates. As such, there was no opposing party to fact check the lying candidate. That was Lauer’s job. In the forum setting, Lauer was the adversary and he failed in that role.

I believe any other moderator in Lauer’s position would have failed in the same way, especially in a time-sensitive format where each candidate had only 30 minutes of questioning.  Safe to say, during his presidential run, Trump has gotten the better of many a seasoned interviewer.

Have you ever played Whack-a-Mole?
