O’Donnell: “51% Of The Senate Defies 75% Of The People”

February 1, 2020 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Last night on MSNBC’s The Last Word, Lawrence O’Donnell talked about how it’s possible the Senate could defy the will of the people to hear witnesses at Trump’s impeachment trial. According to the latest Quinnipiac poll, 75% of Americans favored the Senate allowing witnesses.

“When you’re watching the United States Senate on days like today, it’s always important to remember you’re not watching democracy in action,” said O’Donnell. “The Senate is now, always has been, and always will be an anti-democratic institution because the Senate does not represent people, the House represents people, that’s why it’s called the People’s House. The U.S. Senate represents land.”

“And because people are not evenly distributed over our land,” continued O’Donnell,” the 760,000 people of North Dakota get two United State senators and the 39 million people of California get two United States senators.”

“California gets 53 members in the House of Representatives and North Dakota gets one. And that is fair,” O’Donnell offered as an example of what democratic representation looks like.

O’Donnell took issue with the common refrain that yesterday’s Senate vote to block witnesses killed our democracy.

“American democracy didn’t die today. American democracy once again revealed its most serious structural flaw … the United States Senate.”

O’Donnell implored Democratic voters to concentrate on winning the United States Senate just as much as winning the presidency “and making our government more responsive to the will of the people … what a true democracy is supposed to represent.”

It should be noted that up until 1913, Senators were elected by state legislatures. The 17th amendment to the Constitution changed all that by allowing direct votes by the people.

While revamping the Senate is a fantasy, wouldn’t it be nice if that other undemocratic and outdated institution, the Electoral College, were also reformed in favor of a direct, popular vote?

Trump Calls For Investigation Of Impeachment Vote

December 20, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Reprint from moronmajority.com

Alleging foul play, Donald Trump is asking for an investigation of the electronic voting system used in the House of Representatives.

White House sources say Trump believes the only way he could have lost the House vote is for hacking to have occurred. In fact, these same sources say Trump was “shellshocked” when he learned the impeachment vote went against him.

“All my top people told me Nancy didn’t have the votes to impeach,” Trump tweeted today. “This is 100% VOTER FRAUD!”

“Why doesn’t the House take votes like the Senate?” questioned Trump. “Very fishy.”

It should be noted that, unlike the Senate where votes are recorded by roll call, electronic voting is unique to the House due to the fact it is four times larger than the Senate.

One aide, who asked for anonymity, said that when asked what proof he had for his allegation, Trump snapped, “I don’t need proof. I have Barr!”

It has been confirmed that Trump’s Attorney General, William Barr, will be opening an investigation into the alleged hacking of the House voting system. He is expected to hire Kaspersky Lab, a cyber security firm headquartered in Moscow, to handle the probe.

Trump And The Will Of The People

December 19, 2019 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

If you watched any of the House impeachment hearings, you undoubtedly heard this popular Republican talking point … the Democrats, through their hatred of Donald Trump, were trying to undo the “will of the people.” Of course, that argument is total nonsense as the “will of the people” was to elect Hillary Clinton president.

Donald Trump was only able to secure the presidency through the arcane system of the electoral college. As far as “the people” were concerned, they voted for Clinton over Trump by nearly 3 million votes.

The House of Representatives is often described as “The People’s House.” And yesterday the House voted out two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. One for abuse of power and the other for obstruction of Congress.

Yes, the people, through their elected representatives, voted to indict the man who has so debased, and continues to debase, the Oval Office. This is the true “will of the people.” The action now moves to the Senate for the trial of Donald J. Trump.

Democrats regained control of the House in the 2018 midterm elections for many reasons. One of the main reasons was to get us to the exact point where we find ourselves today … on the doorstep of removing Trump from office.

The Senate is often referred to as “the world’s greatest deliberative body.” That glowing phrase is now being called into question with Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, having already telegraphed the fix is in.

Speaking to Sean Hannity of Fox News, McConnell flat out stated there was “zero chance” Trump would be removed from office, and promised “total coordination” with the White House and Trump’s defense team.

“The case is so darn weak coming over from the House,” he said. “We all know how it’s going to end.”

It remains to be seen what type of trial, if any, the Senate will hold. But don’t hold your breath for anything that remotely resembles fairness.

After yesterday’s historic vote in the House, Donald Trump can truthfully say he got more votes than Clinton … well, yes, Bill Clinton.

When the House voted to impeach William Jefferson Clinton on charges of obstruction, the vote was 221-212. Trump outdid Clinton by securing a 229-198 vote on his obstruction charge.

Trump Threatens To Veto Any Articles Of Impeachment Approved By The House

October 31, 2019 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Reprint from moronmajority.com

It is becoming ever more clear the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives will vote out articles of impeachment against Donald Trump to send to the Senate for trial.

After today’s vote in the House formalizing the procedures of the impeachment inquiry, which passed mostly along party lines (232-196), Donald Trump tweeted the following:

Today the conflicted Democrat House voted against me 232-196. This pathetic display is an unconstitutional attack against your duly elected president that will amount to nothing. I will veto any articles of impeachment that come out of the House. And Little Nancy is too dumb to do the math. She does not have the two-thirds vote to override my veto

It appears White House staff members are too intimidated by their boss to explain to him how the Constitutional impeachment process works.

Democrats’ Big Win Reveals Stark Reality … We Are As Divided As Ever

November 8, 2018 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Democrats won big on election night. They achieved their primary goal of retaking the House. Finally America might have a check on Donald Trump’s total disregard for norms, customs and the rule of law itself.

The much-anticipated “blue wave” did materialize. Democrats flipped over 30 House seats, took seven gubernatorial races (and counting), and made significant gains in down ballot races—winning over 260 state legislative seats with more to come.

But many Democrats are not celebrating their big night. Perhaps it’s because the “blue wave” came with a harsh red undertow.

Three red-state senators lost their races, giving Republicans greater control of the Senate. Two charismatic Democratic candidates – Beta O’Rourke in Texas and Andrew Gillum in Florida, lost their election bids, though narrowly.

What the midterms clearly revealed is that we are a divided nation mostly separated along urban-rural lines.

Defeated Claire MaCaskill of Missouri perhaps said it best: “The further you get from metropolitan areas, the more powerful Donald Trump is and the more allegiance there is to whatever he says or does.”

As Robert L. Borosage of The Nation writes, “Republicans are increasingly the party of rural, white, non-college-educated males, and aging and evangelical voters.” This so-called “Trump base” was susceptible to “Trump’s manic, unhinged, dishonest, and scurrilous campaigning…No doubt his blend of hate and fear helped build Republican turnout.”

But change may be in the air. Democrats made dramatic advances in formerly Republican suburbs, and in the Midwest, while continuing to gain in the Southwest.

Many Progressive ballot initiatives across the country fared well.  The new Democratic House is expected to include 100 women.

Trump incredibly tweeted Tuesday’s election results were a “Big Victory” for him!

The truth is Donald Trump is a con man and more Americans are not falling for the sting.

As Borosage aptly put it, “The 2018 election exposed once more how divided the country is—but it also showed the tide is running against Trump’s hateful brand of politics and the party that he continues to deform.”

State Of The Union?… Broken

January 30, 2018 By John DeProspo 5 Comments

-“All the King’s horses and all the King’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again”

Tonight, Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address. No doubt we will hear how great the country is doing under his strong leadership. The official theme of Trump’s monologue will be “building a safe, strong, and proud America.”

The address is sure to be filled with many half-truths and outright lies. Trump will unquestionably take credit for a booming economy (stock market) that had its origins under the Obama administration. He will falsely claim this is all due to his tax cuts and deregulatory agenda.

But no matter what fiction Trump is willing to peddle, the majority of Americans won’t be buying the snake oil. They know better. They can see.

They can see a country divided like never before (at least not since the Vietnam War).

They can see hate crimes on the rise.

They can see racism displayed openly.

They can see a dysfunctional healthcare system.

They can see an unrelenting onslaught on immigrants.

They can see the looting of the treasury to benefit millionaires and corporations.

They can see an assault on the Constitution and the rule of law.

They can see a political party defending and supporting an incompetent and, mostly likely, corrupt president.

They can see the open rejection of political norms and institutions.

They can see a steady and continuing attack on the free press.

Many Americans are hoping the midterm elections will put an end to our national nightmare when it is believed Democrats will regain control of the House.

But even if Democrats flip the House and begin impeachment proceedings, it is the Senate that votes to expel a president. The odds that two-thirds of senators will vote for conviction are best described as slim.

One thing is for sure, however. The Trump regime will eventually come to an end. Unfortunately, it will take years, perhaps decades, to undo the damage done by Trump, and his band of enablers, to that great country Reagan once called “ a beacon of hope, a light unto the nations.”

Congressional Republicans Embark On Path To Self-Destruction

December 20, 2017 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

The Republican-controlled House and Senate just passed a tax bill that hurts everyone except millionaires, billionaires and corporations. Why would they do that? Why would they vote for a bill that is strongly opposed by a majority of Americans? Don’t they realize the mid-term elections are on the horizon? Don’t they understand a riled up electorate will surely kick them out of office?

To understand this paradox, it helps to recall the tale of the scorpion and the frog.

One day, a scorpion looked around at the mountain where he lived and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through the forests and hills. He climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until he reached a river.

The river was wide and swift, and the scorpion stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn’t see any way across. So he ran upriver and then checked downriver, all the while thinking that he might have to turn back.

Suddenly, he saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other side of the river. He decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream.

“Hellooo Mr. Frog!” called the scorpion across the water, “Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?”

“Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?” asked the frog hesitantly.

“Because,” the scorpion replied, “If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!”

Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. “What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!”

“This is true,” agreed the scorpion, “But then I wouldn’t be able to get to the other side of the river!”

“Alright then…how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?” said the frog.

“Ahh…,” crooned the scorpion, “Because you see, once you’ve taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!”

So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog’s back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog’s soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.

Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog’s back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.

“You fool!” croaked the frog, “Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?”

The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drowning frog’s back.

“I could not help myself. It is my nature.“

Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

Congressional Republicans may have committed political suicide but they could not help themselves. Passing tax cuts for their mega-rich, powerful donors is in their nature.
