Mitch McConnell Ditches John Roberts In Favor Of New Presiding Judge

January 19, 2020 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Reprint from moronmajority.com

In a last-minute move that surprised no one, Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, has relieved Chief Justice John Roberts of his role as presiding judge at the Trump impeachment trial in favor of Captain Kangaroo.

McConnell’s desperate maneuver has confirmed what many had feared … he has turned the solemn Congressional responsibility of conducting a fair impeachment trial into a Kangaroo court.

But in a totally unexpected turn that has stunned McConnell, Judge Kangaroo has stated that “a trial without witnesses or documents is a sham trial … a fake trial. My court will not countenance such a clear disregard of its legal and ethical obligations.”

So now, look for the Democrats to get their wish list of potential witnesses … John Bolton, Mick Mulvaney, Lev Parnas, Stormy Daniels, the two Michaels … Cohen and Moore and Chrissy Teigen.

Whether Bolton Testifies Or Not Really Doesn’t Matter

January 17, 2020 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

The Senate impeachment trial of Donald John Trump is scheduled to start next Tuesday under a cloud of uncertainty … will it be a real trial or a sham? Will there be witnesses? Will documents be produced?

Much is being made about the possibe testimony of John Bolton, Trump’s former national security advisor. Will he or won’t he testify? If he does, will he testify truthfully?

While it is still possible that NO witnesses will be called at Trump’s trial, a few Republican senators have expressed an interest in hearing from Bolton. Most notable among the reasonably-sounding senators is Utah’s Mitt Romney.

After Romney stated that he would be open to hearing from witnesses, in general, he was asked specifically if that included Bolton.

“Including John Bolton, yes,” said Romney. “He’s someone who I would like to hear from, and presumably I get the chance to vote for that.”

This intrigue over Bolton’s testimony is grossly puffed up, however.

It won’t matter one way or another!

Even if Bolton testifies he knew about Trump’s attempted shakedown of Ukrainian President Zelensky and tried to warn him against it, it will not sway enough Republican senators (67) to break ranks and vote to oust Trump.

Even if Bolton testifies he knew it was an illegal act, one that threatened our national security, Trump will be acquitted.

The “trial” is fixed and the outcome certain. Remember, Trump is the guy who boasted he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and not lose support. It turns out he wasn’t just talking about voters but also Republican politicians. Trump has made it abundantly clear over the past three years he is less of a president and more of a cult leader.

Oh yes, there may be a few Republicans who put country ahead of party but not enough to remove Trump from office.

The best Democrats can hope for is that Trump will be weakened and thrown out of office by the voters in November … and that all those vulnerable, spineless Republican senators up for reelection are similarly shown the door.

As Senate Trial Nears, Trump Set To Call Three Character Witnesses

January 14, 2020 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Reprint from moronmajority.com

We learned today from Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, that Trump’s impeachment trial may start as early as next Tuesday.

Word has it Donald Trump’s legal team is scrambling to prepare his defense. At the suggestion of Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, three character witnesses will be called by Trump’s legal team to vouch for his good reputation and moral character: Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un and Recep Erdogan.

Putin, it is being reported, is prepared to say Trump is the model of honesty and probity. In the past, Putin has called Trump, “Greatest U.S.A. president.”

Trump’s love affair with the Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, is well documented. It is expected Kim will repeat his description of Trump as “a most wonderful, handsome and loving dear leader.”

Turkey president Erdogan is also a big fan of Donald Trump. He called Trump, “Allah’s gift to Turkey” after the impulsive commander-in-chief abandoned our allies, the Kurds, in Syria.

Yet some are already questioning the Giuliani-inspired tactic. They point out the three men are obviously beholden to Trump for various favors afforded them in the past. And, oh yes, they are all despots!

Nonetheless, the three strongmen are held in such high esteem by nearly all the Republican senators who will act as jurors at Trump’s impeachment trial that it seems well worth the effort, according to one of Trump’s most trusted advisors, son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Graham to Pelosi … We Can Hold Sham Trial Without Your Stinkin’ Articles of Impeachment

January 5, 2020 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Ever since the House voted to impeach Trump on December 18, Nancy Pelosi has refused to send the two impeachment articles to the Senate for a vote. She has wanted just one simple thing from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell … an assurance of a fair trial.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has apparently had enough of Pelosi’s “political stunt.” He has given her until sundown to get out of town.

Graham’s ultimatum to Pelosi is this … if she does not deliver impeachment articles against Trump to the Senate by the end of the week, the Senate should “take matters in our own hands.”

“What I would do, if she continues to refuse to send the articles as required by the Constitution, I would work with Senator McConnell to change the rules of the Senate so we could start the trial without her, if necessary,” Graham proposed.

Now isn’t that just peachy? So simple … so Republican!

You have to hand it to GOPers, they are masters at the the art of political cheating. If they don’t like rules, they change them. If they don’t like laws, they ignore them!

This is what actually came out of Graham’s mouth:

“Well, we’re not going to let Nancy Pelosi use the rules of the Senate to her advantage. This is dangerous to the presidency as an institution. They impeached the president, but the speaker of the House is holding the articles back, trying to extort from the majority leader of the Senate a trial to her liking. They’re trying to hold these articles over the head of the president.”

So Nancy Pelosi is using the current rules of the Senate to extort a promise of a fair trial? What gall, what brazenness!

Unfortunately for Graham, it’s unlikely Republican senators would vote for such a radical move.

According to Rachael Bade of the Washington Post, “Senate rules suggest such a move would be difficult, if not impossible. It would take 60 votes to pass a resolution on impeachment outside a trial and 67 votes to change the impeachment rules. That threshold would require Democratic support, since McConnell has only 53 Republicans — and Democrats would be loath to undercut Pelosi.”

But with Graham, McConnell and all the other Republican sycophants in the Senate, is anything really beyond the realm of possibility?

A D.C. Christmas Poem

December 21, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the House

Not a representative was stirring, having gone home to a spouse

The votes had been taken and counted with care

To impeach “the imposter,” the pretend billionaire

They returned to their districts to explain what they’d done

Said Nancy to members, “no gloating, no fun”

While Democrats performed their mandated duty

Republicans trashed the Dems, acting all snooty

They defended their leader with passion and glee

Facts be damned for the Reps from Tennessee

They asked, “So what if he asked Zelensky a favor?”

That certainly didn’t rise to impeachable behavior!

His protectors insisted no “quid pro quo”

Even as Trump asked, “Do us a favor, though”

It was a “perfect call” they in unison said

While visions of McConnell danced in their heads

The “Grim Reaper” would save them, of this they all knew

It didn’t matter what high crimes and misdemeanors the Dems did pursue

The fix in the Senate was made oh so clear

Not only by old Mitch but Miss Lindsey, oh dear!

So now we must wait for the start of 2020

To hold a Senate trial, or maybe not any

One thing’s for certain as we look to next year

The ride will be bumpier than we can imagine, I fear

If there’s one hope for all of us Dems

It’s that some patriotic Republican senators will in fact Trump condemn

And even though he might remain in his office

A majority of the Senate may denounce Trump as lawless.

So do not fear, Dems, for having done what was right

Your conscience is clear

“Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night!”

Trump Calls For Investigation Of Impeachment Vote

December 20, 2019 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Reprint from moronmajority.com

Alleging foul play, Donald Trump is asking for an investigation of the electronic voting system used in the House of Representatives.

White House sources say Trump believes the only way he could have lost the House vote is for hacking to have occurred. In fact, these same sources say Trump was “shellshocked” when he learned the impeachment vote went against him.

“All my top people told me Nancy didn’t have the votes to impeach,” Trump tweeted today. “This is 100% VOTER FRAUD!”

“Why doesn’t the House take votes like the Senate?” questioned Trump. “Very fishy.”

It should be noted that, unlike the Senate where votes are recorded by roll call, electronic voting is unique to the House due to the fact it is four times larger than the Senate.

One aide, who asked for anonymity, said that when asked what proof he had for his allegation, Trump snapped, “I don’t need proof. I have Barr!”

It has been confirmed that Trump’s Attorney General, William Barr, will be opening an investigation into the alleged hacking of the House voting system. He is expected to hire Kaspersky Lab, a cyber security firm headquartered in Moscow, to handle the probe.

Trump And The Will Of The People

December 19, 2019 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

If you watched any of the House impeachment hearings, you undoubtedly heard this popular Republican talking point … the Democrats, through their hatred of Donald Trump, were trying to undo the “will of the people.” Of course, that argument is total nonsense as the “will of the people” was to elect Hillary Clinton president.

Donald Trump was only able to secure the presidency through the arcane system of the electoral college. As far as “the people” were concerned, they voted for Clinton over Trump by nearly 3 million votes.

The House of Representatives is often described as “The People’s House.” And yesterday the House voted out two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. One for abuse of power and the other for obstruction of Congress.

Yes, the people, through their elected representatives, voted to indict the man who has so debased, and continues to debase, the Oval Office. This is the true “will of the people.” The action now moves to the Senate for the trial of Donald J. Trump.

Democrats regained control of the House in the 2018 midterm elections for many reasons. One of the main reasons was to get us to the exact point where we find ourselves today … on the doorstep of removing Trump from office.

The Senate is often referred to as “the world’s greatest deliberative body.” That glowing phrase is now being called into question with Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, having already telegraphed the fix is in.

Speaking to Sean Hannity of Fox News, McConnell flat out stated there was “zero chance” Trump would be removed from office, and promised “total coordination” with the White House and Trump’s defense team.

“The case is so darn weak coming over from the House,” he said. “We all know how it’s going to end.”

It remains to be seen what type of trial, if any, the Senate will hold. But don’t hold your breath for anything that remotely resembles fairness.

After yesterday’s historic vote in the House, Donald Trump can truthfully say he got more votes than Clinton … well, yes, Bill Clinton.

When the House voted to impeach William Jefferson Clinton on charges of obstruction, the vote was 221-212. Trump outdid Clinton by securing a 229-198 vote on his obstruction charge.

There are 250 Congressional Republicans … Is There One Patriot Among Them?

November 24, 2019 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Last week’s impeachment hearings were devastating for Trump. Witness after witness testified to his scheme to extort the Ukrainian president to do his political bidding by “investigating” a company named Burisma and “the 2016 election.”

We all know now, as some of the witnesses made clear, Burisma is codeword for the Bidens and “the 2016 election” means the debunked conspiracy theory that it was Ukraine, no Russia, that meddled in our 2016 elections.

And yet not one single Republican member of Congress (53 in the Senate; 197 in the House) has come out in support of Trump’s impeachment.

The closest we’ve come are a few timid souls who have stated that while what Trump did was wrong, it does not rise to the level of an impeachable offense.

The most notable Republican to hold this view is Rep. Will Hurd, a so-called moderate from Texas who is not running for reelection.

Said Hurd:

“An impeachable offense should be compelling, overwhelmingly clear and unambiguous, and it is not something to be rushed or taken lightly. I have not heard evidence proving the president committed bribery or extortion. I also reject the notion that holding this view means supporting all of the foreign policy choices we have been hearing about over these last few weeks.”

With someone like Hurd, who many called one of the most likely Republicans to break ranks to vote for impeachment, holding firm, the prospect of any Republican doing what their oath of office compels them to do is very unlikely.

Just look at the lengths to which some Republicans have gone to defend Trump and his conspiracy theory about “the 2016 election.”

When Chris Wallace of Fox News today asked Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana, “Who do you believe was responsible for the hacking of the DNC and Clinton campaign computers, their emails – was it Russia or Ukraine?” Kennedy gave the absurd and delusional answer, “I don’t know. Nor do you. Nor do any of us.”

The wagons have been circled. For Republicans, it’s defend Trump no matter the costs … to our country, to our Constitution, and to our dignity.

What’s so alarming is this lockstep support for Trump just might work. In a recent poll of independents, after the House hearings, support for impeachment has actually declined

Trump Threatens To Veto Any Articles Of Impeachment Approved By The House

October 31, 2019 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Reprint from moronmajority.com

It is becoming ever more clear the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives will vote out articles of impeachment against Donald Trump to send to the Senate for trial.

After today’s vote in the House formalizing the procedures of the impeachment inquiry, which passed mostly along party lines (232-196), Donald Trump tweeted the following:

Today the conflicted Democrat House voted against me 232-196. This pathetic display is an unconstitutional attack against your duly elected president that will amount to nothing. I will veto any articles of impeachment that come out of the House. And Little Nancy is too dumb to do the math. She does not have the two-thirds vote to override my veto

It appears White House staff members are too intimidated by their boss to explain to him how the Constitutional impeachment process works.

Donald Trump Asks Interesting Question About Presidential Impeachment

October 29, 2019 By John DeProspo 9 Comments

Article courtesy of guest contributor, Alden Loveshade

Donald Trump asked on Twitter: “Are you allowed to impeach a president for gross incompetence?”

Thank you for asking, Mr. Trump.  I for one really appreciate that you are concerned about this issue. I must apologize, however, for not responding much sooner as you posted this way back on  June 4, 2014.

Fortunately, this is an excellent time for you and other Americans to see how this process works. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has initiated a formal impeachment inquiry against an American president.

But what is impeachment of the president? This is covered by Articles I and II of the U.S. Constitution. Article I states the House of Representatives can bring charges against a sitting president and the Senate has the sole power to try impeachments.

In practice, as this means overturning the “will of the people,” impeachment is reserved for very serious offenses such as Article II’s “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” This could include something like betrayal of the oath of office, betrayal of national security, or betrayal of the integrity of national elections.

Of course it’s hard to imagine any American president betraying their oath of office, the national security, or the integrity of national elections. But it’s good to know you and I, and all Americans, can be protected from such a president!

Did you know two, or three, presidents (people disagree on this) were impeached before you posted your tweet? Andrew Johnson, who became president after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, was the first.  The second who clearly was impeached was Bill Clinton. There’s some debate as to whether Richard Nixon was impeached as the process had begun but was not completed when he resigned. No U.S. president has been removed from office after impeachment–at the time of your tweet.

But this does not answer your question: can the president of the United States be impeached for gross incompetence?

The answer is “probably not.”

But I’m glad that you want to understand how American government works. Impeachment is specifically a trial for presidential crime(s) or misconduct, not ineptitude. That’s usually left for the voters to decide.

I appreciate that you, an American citizen, want to learn about how American laws and the Constitution work. While I understand your desire to see that a president who’s grossly incompetent is removed from office, the initiation of impeachment proceedings usually requires more than mere ineptness … perhaps something along the line of extorting a foreign government to dig up, or manufacture, dirt on your political rival for your personal, political benefit.
