And The Barr Just Keeps Getting Lower

May 8, 2020 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Yesterday Americans got one more example (if they needed one) of how the rule of law no longer exists in the United States. Well, at least for those associated with the Trump crime syndicate.

William Barr has given the admittedly guilty criminal, Michael Flynn, a “get out of jail free card.”

William Barr, who many have labeled Trump’s personal Roy Cohn, has turned the Department of Justice into the Department of Just-us.

We should not be surprised.

We all knew Barr was lying through his teeth when he said, at his confirmation hearing, he would never cave to political pressure from Trump or anyone else, insisting his age and experience freed him to act independently.

And yet some Democrats are stunned. Jerry Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, condemned Barr in a written statement: “The decision to drop the charges against General Flynn is outrageous. The evidence against General Flynn is overwhelming.”

“He pleaded guilty to lying to investigators,” continued Nadler. “And now a politicized and thoroughly corrupt Department of Justice is going to let the President’s crony simply walk away. Americans are right to be furious and worried about the continued erosion of our rule of law.” Nadler predictably called for a new inspector general’s investigation. Good luck with that!

Remember this is the same William Barr who lied to the American people about the contents of the Mueller Report; the same henchman who reversed prosecutors’ sentencing recommendations for convicted Trump confidant Roger Stone; the same toady who refused to investigate Trump’s extortion of Ukraine for political gain; and the same Attorney General who wants us to believe he was “appalled” by the “apparent suicide” of Jeffrey Epstein.

It is probably too late for Barr to be impeached for his unprecedented assaults on the rule of law.

At the very least, Barr needs to be disbarred for transforming the role of our nation’s top law enforcement officer into that of a corrupt consigliere for Trump’s personal interests.

Adam Schiff has been quoted as saying Barr has “weaponized” the Justice Department to go after Trump’s enemies. He could have added, “and to go light on Trump’s criminal associates.”

Let’s not let the coronavirus pandemic distract us from what Barr is doing to undermine the bedrock of American democracy … the rule of law. The man needs to be held accountable in whatever way possible.

Democrats, Republicans, and anyone who believes in the primacy of American justice, should be calling for Barr’s resignation … immediately.

Giuliani’s Latest Version Of Trump-Comey Conversation … “Never Happened”

August 14, 2018 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

On July 8, 2017, former FBI Director, James Comey, testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee, saying Donald Trump asked him to go lightly on former National Security advisor, Michael Flynn.

At a private meeting at the White House, Comey told the senators that Trump praised Flynn as a “good guy.” Comey, testifying under oath, said Trump repeated that Flynn hadn’t done anything wrong on his calls with the Russians, but had misled the Vice President. According to Comey, Trump then said, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”

Of course, if Trump asked Comey to quash the ongoing investigation into Flynn, that would most likely constitute obstruction of justice.

In an interview on CNN this Sunday, Trump’s mouthpiece, Rudy Giuliani, said, “There was no conversation about Michael Flynn.”

It appears Giuliani has gone full Trump.

Giuliani told ABC News on July 8 about the Trump-Comey conversation, saying, “What he said was, ‘Can you, can you give him a break?’” On July 30, Giuliani was even more explicit about that version of events during an interview with Fox News, saying, “He didn’t tell him, ‘Don’t investigate him, don’t prosecute him.’ He asked him to exercise his prosecutorial discretion because he was a good man with a great war record.”

If you thought Donald Trump was the only one who could change his own narrative in the face of video evidence to the contrary, you’d be wrong.

It’s safe to say Giuliani’s main objective as Trump’s TV attorney is to obfuscate and confuse … to muddy the waters, if you will.

Gene Robinson of the Washington Post has written, “There is madness in Rudolph W. Giuliani’s incoherence on behalf of President Trump, but there is also method. He’s following the Trump playbook: Confuse, distract, provoke and flood the zone with factoids and truthiness until nobody can be sure what’s real and what’s not.”

While the Giuliani strategy seems to be working, especially with Trump supporters, it will have no impact on Robert Mueller’s Trump-Russia investigation.

But Trump and Giuliani are betting they can sway public opinion enough to get 45 off the hook.

Giuliani gave the game away when he told CNN on May 27, “To a large extent…what we’re doing here, it is the public opinion, because eventually the decision here is going to be impeach or not impeach.”

It is obvious Giuliani doesn’t care about his reputation or looking like a legal hack.  As it stands, the former federal prosecutor has turned out to be one of the few effective Trump picks.

Trump: Flynn … Flynn Who?

December 1, 2017 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Today may be remembered as the day Trump went down for the count. Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations he had with the Russian ambassador (spy?) last December. Sources say Flynn is ready to finger his old boss.

While we have yet to hear from the Twitter-happy Trump about this bombshell development in the Mueller investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia, Ty Cobb, Trump’s attorney issued the following statement:

“Today, Michael Flynn, a former National Security Advisor at the White House for 25 days during the Trump Administration, and a former Obama administration official, entered a guilty plea to a single count of making a false statement to the FBI.

The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year. Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn. The conclusion of this phase of the Special Counsel’s work demonstrates again that the Special Counsel is moving with all deliberate speed and clears the way for a prompt and reasonable conclusion.”

Perhaps anticipating this day, Trump put out a statement in early May trying to distance himself from Flynn’s legal troubles. He blamed any problems with the retired three-star general on the Obama administration.  Trump tweeted Flynn was “given the highest security clearance by the Obama Administration – but the Fake News seldom likes talking about that.”

During a Fox News interview this past April, Trump blamed Obama for flaws in the Flynn vetting process. “So when he came into our administration, for a short period of time, he came in, he was already approved by the Obama administration and he had years left on that approval,” Trump said.

After Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, was indicted on charges stemming from Mueller’s investigation, he tried to downplay his connection with Manafort as well. Once again his attorney, Ty Cobb, issued a statement that emphasized the short amount of time Manafort acted as campaign manager.

“[Trump] likes and respects Mr. Manafort and appreciates the work he did for him during the three months he was with the campaign.”

Let’s see … Flynn, 25 days with the administration; Manafort only three months with the campaign? How could Trump possibly have had any real association with the two or know what they were up to with Russia?

Alls eyes are waiting for the King of Twitter to offer up some ridiculous and incredible statement.

As a famous bandleader used to say, “ And-a-one-and-a-two-and-a-three …”
