“This man is a loser”

November 9, 2022 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Have Republicans finally come to the realize the emperor has no clothes?

Sure looks that way after last night’s poor showing by Trump-backed candidates!

“If you want the Republican Party to thrive, we’ve got to just finally speak out and say, ‘This man is a loser’,” said former Trump White House communications director, Alyssa Farah Griffin.

Former Trump White House deputy press secretary, Sarah Matthews, said what many Republicans are reluctantly acknowledging, “I think last night was the biggest indicator that Donald Trump should not be the Republican nominee in 2024.”  She went on to say what was obvious to many political observers, including Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell, “He cost Republicans winnable seats by boosting poor quality candidates.”

Republican strategist, Scott Jennings, tweeted, “How could you look at these results tonight and conclude Trump has any chance of winning a national election in 2024?”

Trump has teased for a long time that he will announce another run for the White House. At a rally in Ohio, just before the midterm elections, Trump said he will make a “very big announcement” on November 15 which many believe will be the announcement of his presidential run.

So will he or won’t he following yesterday’s humiliation at the polls, coupled with his rival’s, Ron DeSantis, blowout victory for governor of Florida?

I’m not a betting man but I believe Trump won’t run. Does he really want to risk being a two-time loser? But you never know. A narcissist is going to do what a narcissist is going to do. Has Trump ever been guided by sound advice … political, legal or otherwise?

One thing’s for sure. Republicans who were told by Trump they’d be sick and tired of winning, are starting to get sick and tired of losing … bigly!

Dems Need To Make Midterms Single-Issue Election

February 8, 2022 By John DeProspo 3 Comments

Forget about “Build Back Better.” Leave that and all other policy proposals for another day.

If Democrats want to be successful in the upcoming midterm elections (hold the House and gain seats in the Senate) they need to emphasize one thing and one thing only … they are the party that is standing up for our system of government and the Constitution. Heck, you could say they are the one major political party fighting to protect democracy itself.

In a resolution formally censuring GOP Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, the Republican National Committee last week described the events surrounding the January 6, 2021 insurrection as “legitimate political discourse.”

How incredible and messed-up is that! The official arm of the Republican Party has made a choice. They are siding with the traitors and insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol and tried to stop the electoral college certification of Joe Biden as the newly-elected president.  They’ve gone all-in with Donald Trump and his Big Lie.

What an amazing gift for the Democratic Party!

Going into the midterms, Democrats need to keep their message simple because the choice really is simple. You are either on the side of democracy and the Constitution or you are on the side of traitors and insurrectionists. You are either on the side of a party that believes in the rule of law or on the side of one that believes in taking the law into its own hands.

That wise old evil owl, Mitch McConnell, knows what the RNC did is not good for his party. He came out today saying what occurred on January 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol, was “a violent insurrection.” McConnell said the committee should not be “singling out members of our party who may have different views from the majority,” adding that it’s “not the job of the RNC.”

Sorry, Mitch, but it’s a bit too late for damage control. The bed’s been made. The Republican National Committee showed its hand. It will not retract the statement as it would not be the Trumpian thing to do.

Call me a silly optimist but I have to believe that if given a choice between a true functioning democracy or a Turkish-style “democracy”, most Americans, including independents and moderate Republicans (yes there are still some) will choose the former.

The Republicans have handed the Democrats a hammer and they need to pound the Party of Trump over the head with it every day.

To paraphrase a wise old political strategist … “It’s the democracy, stupid”

Ready For Some November Fireworks?

November 1, 2018 By John DeProspo 3 Comments

With all the excitement, and nervousness, surrounding the upcoming midterm elections, it’s easy to forget about Bobby Three Sticks. The consummate professional, Robert Mueller III has gone radio silent over the past few months.

Unlike former FBI Director James Comey, who weighed in on the Hillary Clinton email investigation days before the 2016 election, Mueller has honored the longstanding Justice Department policy that prosecutors should not take actions that might affect pending elections.

Rest assured, however, Mueller has not been idly passing time sipping a tropical drink under a shady palm tree somewhere in the Bahamas. The man has simply been quietly and methodically going about his business investigating possible Trump-Russia collusion during the 2016 presidential election and subsequent obstruction of justice by Trump.

Just last week Mueller interviewed the former White House Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon … for the third time. It is being reported by Politico that the Special Counsel’s office may have already issued a subpoena for Trump to testify in front of a grand jury.

No matter what happens after next Tuesday’s election, expect some fireworks  (indictments, reports?) out of the reserved and staid former Eagle Scout in the very near future.

If the Democrats, as predicted, take back control of the House, expect our “So-Called” President to become even more unhinged and erratic.

The final episodes of the best reality show on TV may finally be upon us.

Gloves Off, Obama Criticizes Trump, By Name, For First Time

September 7, 2018 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

During a speech at the University of Illinois today, Barack Obama, for the first time since leaving office, attacked Donald Trump by name.

Speaking of the current corrosive and corrupt political climate, Obama said, “It did not start with Donald Trump. He is a symptom, not the cause. He’s just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years.”

This is a departure from the deliberate way Obama has avoided direct criticism of his successor. During his much-celebrated speech at the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg earlier this year, Obama attacked the “politics of fear and resentment,” but never named Trump directly.

With only 60 days until the midterm elections, Obama appears to have made the calculation that this is no time to be timid.

“You need to vote because our democracy depends on it. … This moment really is different,” Obama told his audience. “The consequences of any of us sitting on the sidelines are more dire.”

Pointing out to his audience that only one in five young people voted in the 2014 midterm elections, Obama cautioned the students there is only one way to save our democracy … “Vote, vote, vote.”

Obama’s impassioned speech to the young audience reminded many of his breakthrough keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention that thrust him into the national spotlight.

It is only a matter of time before Donald Trump attacks Obama for what he will undoubtedly see as a challenge and breach in “presidential” etiquette.

From all indications, the new, energized Obama is not only ready for the fight but relishes the opportunity to be back in the political arena.

Government Shutdown All Part Of GOP Game Plan

January 20, 2018 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Headlines this morning seem to all be questioning how a party that controls both houses of Congress and the executive branch could not avert a government shutdown. There is much talk about legislative incompetence. Trump is being labeled an ineffective president.

But these storylines miss the point.

Donald Trump and the GOP got exactly what they wanted … a shutdown.

With Republican prospects for the 2018 midterms looking exceptionally bad, a new narrative needed to be concocted. And Trump and company got their wish … blame Democrats for the failure to keep the government open.

The bet is that Republicans can anger a majority of Americans by mounting a media blitz that blames Democrats for the shutdown … despite GOP control of Congress.

It is being reported that Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Shumer, met with Donald Trump yesterday morning to try and work out an agreement to avert the shutdown.

“I reluctantly put the border wall on the table for discussion — even that was not enough to entice the president to finish the deal,” Shumer said, adding: “What has transpired since that meeting in the Oval Office is indicative of the entire tumultuous and chaotic process Republicans have engaged in the negotiations thus far. Even though President Trump seemed to like an outline of a deal in the room, he did not press his party in Congress to accept it.”

Shumer, who seems to buy the bunk that Republicans wanted to avert a shutdown, has laughably accused the president of not “taking yes for an answer.”

Already the Trump TV Netowrk, Fox News, is putting the shutdown on the Democrats. The new Republican talking point is to brand this massive governmental failure the “Shumer Shutdown.”

That this gambit is all about the 2018 midterm elections was given away by Trump in one of his early morning tweets:

For those asking, the Republicans only have 51 votes in the Senate, and they need 60. That is why we need to win more Republicans in 2018 Election! We can then be even tougher on Crime (and Border), and even better to our Military & Veterans!

Will a majority of Americans buy this malarkey?

Right now, most Americans are blaming the GOP for the shutdown. But that is all subject to change once the Republican spin machine kicks into high gear.

That is the bet.

Don’t believe this is all part of the Republican game plan?

Here is a statement issued by the White House even before the official deadline for Congress to keep the government open passed at 12:01 am last night:

Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown. Tonight, they put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country’s ability to serve all Americans. We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands. This is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislators. When Democrats start paying our armed forces and first responders we will reopen negotiations on immigration reform. During this politically manufactured Schumer Shutdown, the President and his Administration will fight for and protect the American people.
