The GOP Has Irredeemably Gone To POT

July 14, 2021 By John DeProspo 3 Comments

Funny, but there are still some pundits talking about the civil war within the Republican Party.

We read stories of how Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger (along with a few other so-called Republican “moderates”) are standing up for traditional conservative values against the Trump nihilists within their beloved party.

The truth is there is no longer a Republican Party. Whatever war there was is over. The GOP has become the POT (Party of Trump).

What’s that you say Mitt and Lisa … you are not members of the POT? You do not worship at the feet of the Orange Calf? You say now that Trump is no longer sitting in the White House his influence over your party will fade?

Please wake up and smell the insurrection. You cannot continue to call yourselves Republicans while remaining members of the POT.

You two sensible lawmakers need to immediately and dramatically renounce your party affiliation.

No, you do not have to go full Arlen Specter, the longtime Republican who switched to the Democratic Party in 2009 after saying he increasingly found himself “at odds with the Republican philosophy.”

All you have to do is declare as independents and caucus with the Democrats.

Surely you see what’s at stake?  Our very democracy is being threatened by an avalanche of voter suppression laws coming out of Republican-controlled states. You have been shown by our right-wing Supreme Court that it will not save the day.

But you can!

Your “Republican” colleagues are interested in only one thing … power. I honestly do not believe that applies to you. Show your fellow Americans, and the world, what true patriots you are by helping to pass federal voter protection legislation!

You will forever be revered for your acts of decency and bravery.  You will have separated yourselves from those POT asskissers who are hellbent on putting an end to our 250-year experiment with democracy.

As any good attorney would caution you … time is of the essence.

Whether Bolton Testifies Or Not Really Doesn’t Matter

January 17, 2020 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

The Senate impeachment trial of Donald John Trump is scheduled to start next Tuesday under a cloud of uncertainty … will it be a real trial or a sham? Will there be witnesses? Will documents be produced?

Much is being made about the possibe testimony of John Bolton, Trump’s former national security advisor. Will he or won’t he testify? If he does, will he testify truthfully?

While it is still possible that NO witnesses will be called at Trump’s trial, a few Republican senators have expressed an interest in hearing from Bolton. Most notable among the reasonably-sounding senators is Utah’s Mitt Romney.

After Romney stated that he would be open to hearing from witnesses, in general, he was asked specifically if that included Bolton.

“Including John Bolton, yes,” said Romney. “He’s someone who I would like to hear from, and presumably I get the chance to vote for that.”

This intrigue over Bolton’s testimony is grossly puffed up, however.

It won’t matter one way or another!

Even if Bolton testifies he knew about Trump’s attempted shakedown of Ukrainian President Zelensky and tried to warn him against it, it will not sway enough Republican senators (67) to break ranks and vote to oust Trump.

Even if Bolton testifies he knew it was an illegal act, one that threatened our national security, Trump will be acquitted.

The “trial” is fixed and the outcome certain. Remember, Trump is the guy who boasted he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and not lose support. It turns out he wasn’t just talking about voters but also Republican politicians. Trump has made it abundantly clear over the past three years he is less of a president and more of a cult leader.

Oh yes, there may be a few Republicans who put country ahead of party but not enough to remove Trump from office.

The best Democrats can hope for is that Trump will be weakened and thrown out of office by the voters in November … and that all those vulnerable, spineless Republican senators up for reelection are similarly shown the door.

Mitt Romney … Mocked In 2012, Vindicated In 2017

July 19, 2017 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

It wasn’t that long ago the idea of Russia being our “number one” geopolitical foe was laughable. Literally.

In a 2012 presidential debate, GOP candidate Mitt Romney was roundly derided for saying Russia presented the “greatest geopolitical threat” to the country. To almost everyone watching the televised match, it appeared Romney had committed a major faux pas and had served up a big old softball for President Obama to hit out of the park.

And Obama did.

Reminding Romney of the threat presented to our country by Al Qaeda, Obama quipped, “The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because you know, the Cold War has been over for 20 years.”

The Democratic Party tweeted from their official account, “Romney, who calls Russia our ‘No. 1 geopolitical foe,’ doesn’t seem to realize it’s the 21st century. #RomneyNotReady.”

Boy how Obama and the Democrats are singing a different tune today!

With zero doubt from our intelligence agencies that Putin and his band of hackers meddled in our 2016 presidential election, perhaps enough to have handed the presidency to Donald Trump, Romney’s assessment was beyond spot-on.

A foreign adversary, Russia, launched a stealth attack against the heart of our democracy – its electoral integrity – by helping the candidate of their choice, Donald Trump, through sophisticated cyber warfare.

But as bad as this is, it doesn’t appear the party that benefited from such interference is all that concerned about it. The GOP has not only become the party of Trump, but the party of Putin.

Things have gotten so bad, so out of whack, that Republicans have been either silent or in agreement with Trump’s defense of obvious collusion between his son Don Jr. and Russian nationals: “Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don Jr. attended in order to get info on an opponent. That’s politics!”

Ronald Reagan must be rolling over in his grave wondering how his beloved GOP became sympathizers of what he often dubbed the “Evil Empire.”

What Romney understood at the time, and even a smart politician such as Obama did not, is that the Cold War never really ended … not with Russia being ruled by the former KGB spymaster, Vladimir Putin.
