What If Trump Had Not Accepted Biden’s Offer For An Early Debate?

August 27, 2024 By John DeProspo 1 Comment

Many political analysts love to talk about the two pivotal moments in the 2024 presidential race… Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection and his endorsement of Kamala Harris to become the Democratic Party’s nominee.

But these two milestone developments would never have happened but for a third, and I believe, more consequential, moment. After many wondered if there would even be any presidential debates, the Biden campaign asked for two debates, one in June and one in September.

The eventual June 27 debate date was highly unusual since presidential debates are typically held late in the election cycle, after the political parties have nominated their candidates.

Trump quickly agreed to the Biden proposed schedule.

Without the presidential debate on June 27, Joe Biden’s disastrous performance would never have taken place. He would have been the Democratic Party’s nominee, not Kamala Harris. The Democratic National convention most likely would not have been the raucous, joyful affair that it was. It’s safe to say Democrats would not be as invigorated and hopeful as they are now.

Now let’s think about this. Joe Biden is the Democratic nominee. A September debate takes place. Joe Biden gives the same deer-in-the-headlights performance that he gave in June.

The Democrats would be stuck with Biden just like the Republicans are stuck with Trump. If you’re a Democrat, just think back to that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach that June 27 night. Someone, please get me the Pepto!

If Kamala Harris goes on to win in November, Trump’s decision to participate in the June debate might go down in history as the worst debate decision ever made.

One might ask, “Why would Trump agree to an early debate?” Afterall he was leading in the polls; Democrats were divided, disheartened with their candidate. Usually, it’s the trailing candidate who wants debates to somehow shake up the status quo. The leading candidate rarely wants to give his opponent an opportunity. There was really nothing to gain for Trump.

I think I can answer my own question in one word, “arrogance.” Trump thought he could expose Biden for what he is… a low-energy, old man. Trump would wipe the floor, on the national stage, with Sleepy Joe.

Well, Trump got basically what he wanted, never thinking that such a desired outcome might drive Biden from the presidential race… and give us the more youthful, articulate, confident Kamala.

Funny, the doddering old man in the race now is Trump, who still thinks he’s running against Joe!

No More Debates … Even If They Help Biden

October 1, 2020 By John DeProspo 1 Comment

If you’re a Trump believer, your man won the first presidential debate against Vice President Joe Biden, hands down.

“I really enjoyed last night’s debate with Sleepy Joe … the verdict is in and they say that we, all of us, won big last night,” Trump told a crowd during a rally in Duluth, Minnesota yesterday.

Of course, if you look at the actual polling, it is the complete opposite.

According to a CNN poll of debate watchers conducted by SSRS, six in 10 debate watchers said former Vice President Joe Biden did the best job in Tuesday’s debate, and just 28% say Donald Trump did.

A CNBC/Change Research poll conducted Tuesday and Wednesday found 53% of likely voters nationwide said Biden did a better job in the debate, compared with 29% for Trump.

So, two more scheduled presidential debates should only help Biden, right? Yes.

But would two more exhibitions of what some have called a “national disgrace” and “an embarrassment,” be good for the country? No.

As conservative columnist, George Will, writes in the Washington Post, “The national interest — actually, national security — demands that the other two scheduled mortifications, fraudulently advertised as presidential debates, should be canceled: When a nation makes itself pathetic, the response of enemy nations is not sympathy.”

Yes, more of what we saw on display Tuesday would not only dishearten most Americans, it would also demoralize our friends and allies, while emboldening our enemies.

The bottom line is that the first presidential debate did nothing to change the hearts and minds of voters.

According to the previously mentioned CNBC/Change Research poll, just 2% of respondents said the debate changed their vote, versus 98% who said it didn’t.

So why would we need what would, no doubt, only be the continuation of a fiasco?

Some are suggesting we go ahead with the debates but that they will need to be “fine-tuned.”

Seriously? You cannot fine-tune the mind of a petulant man-child that is Donald Trump.

We’ve heard this phrase many times during the Trump MisAdministration … “enough is enough.”

Yes. No more useless “debates.” Period.

Why Bloomberg’s Pitiful Performance In Vegas Might Prove He Made The Wrong Bet

February 20, 2020 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

Mike Bloomberg, the former Republican, had a simple plan for becoming the Democratic presidential nominee … he’d just buy the nomination.

With his vast fortune, he would overwhelm his rivals with “saturation advertising.” He would not have to bother campaigning in the early primary and caucus states. The refined New York billionaire just isn’t another one of your Iowa corn-dog-eating politicians!

And for a while, the strategy was working. Bloomberg went from nowhere in the charts to second or third in some presidential polls.

But then came the moment he had to step out from behind his curtain of megabucks and onto the Las Vegas debate stage.

To say the billionaire was underwhelming, and showed major unpreparedness, would be putting it mildly.

Bloomberg was attacked from all sides with questions about his past that were so obvious you didn’t need to be a political strategist to predict them. He was hammered most effectively by Elizabeth Warren. She pounded him from the get-go with this classic burn, “I’d like to talk about who we’re running against: a billionaire who calls women fat broads and horse-faced lesbians. And no, I’m not talking about Donald Trump. I’m talking about Mayor Bloomberg.”

Bloomberg has staked his run for the presidency on his sincere, intense desire to beat Trump in November. “The stakes could not be higher, we must win this election,” said Bloomberg. He called Trump an “existential threat to our country.”

It does not appear, however, that his effort to do so by trying to win (buy) the Democratic nomination was the way to go.

A better bet for ousting Trump would have been for Bloomberg  to run as a Republican – the party affiliation he had as Mayor of New York City. While he probably would not have beaten Trump for the party’s nomination, history has shown that incumbent presidents who face strong primary challenges are severely weakened by them.

Did Bloomberg really think he could skate to the Democratic nomination by flooding the airwaves with ads bought by an unlimited reservoir of cash … what Democrats hate most about our post-Citizens United political landscape?

Okay, it’s only Bloomberg’s first debate and who watches them anyway? He might get better. His ad blitz is still effective.

But after his dreadful performance in Las Vegas, the belief that Bloomberg is the most likely Democrat to save us from another four years of Trump is seriously in doubt.

Hillary Was Right. We Just Didn’t Know How Right She Was

January 11, 2019 By John DeProspo 5 Comments

Occam’s razor is a problem-solving principle which basically states the simplest answer is usually the correct answer.

Why does Donald Trump consistently defend an autocrat like Vladimir Putin and disparage our friends and allies? Could it be that Donald Trump is in Putin’s pocket?

Without getting lost in the weeds of elaborate conjecture, the simplest answer is, yes, Trump is Putin’s puppet.

This clip, with Trump’s demented mind on full display, is agonizing to watch but still worth revisiting.

We were warned but, sadly, for many Americans, it just didn’t matter.
