Republicans Sound The Alarm: Harris Administration Could Threaten to Pass Laws Most Americans Actually Want

August 13, 2024 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

Reprint from moronmajority.com

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Republican Party has entered full-blown panic mode amid growing fears that a Kamala Harris administration might attempt to pass legislation that aligns with the will of the majority of Americans.

“We’re facing an unprecedented threat,” said Senator Mitch McConnell, wiping sweat from his brow. “Imagine waking up one morning to find that the government has passed common-sense gun control measures that 80% of the country supports! It’s a nightmare scenario.”

Indeed, the thought of the U.S. Senate actually functioning as a body that reflects public opinion has sent shockwaves through conservative circles. Republican strategists warn that Harris, known for her disturbing habit of listening to experts and acknowledging facts, might push for policies that could actually improve the lives of everyday Americans.

“They’re talking about protecting a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body,” said Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, with a look of sheer horror. “Next thing you know, they’ll be trying to ensure that everyone has access to affordable healthcare. Where does it end?”

Worried that such popular measures might weaken their brand, the GOP has already begun preparing for the worst. Plans are reportedly in place to filibuster any legislation that smacks of progress or equity. “We’ve got to draw a line in the sand,” McConnell added. “If we don’t stand up now, the next thing you know, they’ll be enacting climate policies that could slow global warming. This could lead to a future where our grandchildren can still recognize the seasons. It’s terrifying.”

As the 2024 election looms, Republican leaders are urging their base to stay vigilant. “Remember, this is about stopping a radical, leftist, socialist agenda that includes the things most Americans say they want in poll after poll,” said Senator Ted Cruz. “We can’t let democracy get in the way of our vision for America.”

The GOP Is Stuck With Two Losers

July 24, 2024 By John DeProspo Leave a Comment

The Republican Party wrapped up its national convention on a high note. But just a few days later, it looks like Republicans shot themselves in the foot … twice. With Donald Trump and J.D. Vance leading the charge, the party’s chances are looking shakier by the day. And just when they thought they had everything figured out, Joe Biden pulls a fast one by bowing out, leaving Kamala Harris as the Democrats’ surprise nominee. Talk about a Shakespearean plot twist!

Bringing Trump back into the spotlight is like inviting a bull into a china shop and hoping for a happy ending. Sure, he’s got his die-hard fans, but that won’t be enough to get him back into office. That little kerfuffle otherwise known as the Capitol riot isn’t exactly the kind of highlight reel you want when courting moderate voters. And those indictments and convictions!

Then there’s J.D. Vance, the GOP’s great populist hope. But here’s the kicker: Vance is as green as they come, with a political résumé that’s thinner than a paper napkin. His appeal to the Trump base is clear, but can he actually run a national campaign? Can he bring in new voters to the cause? Those are the big questions, and betting on an untested rookie shows just how short-sighted the Republicans can be.

By going with Trump and Vance, it looks like the Republicans are now stuck with two losers.

Incredibly, the Republicans seem to have been blindsided by Biden’s exit and Harris’s rise. Now who would have thunk it? Well, anyone with half a brain! At least you plan for such a possibility.

Kamala Harris, with her broad appeal and seasoned political chops, has rallied the Democrats in a way the GOP didn’t see coming. She’s energizing key voter groups that the Republicans need to win. By ignoring the possibility of a Harris candidacy, the GOP is now scrambling like a chicken with its head chopped off!

In the end, the Republicans have set themselves up for a tough ride. They’re sticking with Trump’s divisive charm and rolling the dice on Vance’s rookie status, all while being caught off guard by Kamala Harris. It looks like the GOP’s arrogance, and incompetence, are the best things Democrats have going for them.

The “Party Of Stupid” Just Can’t Help Itself

December 12, 2022 By John DeProspo 1 Comment

Bobby, Bobby, oh Bobby.

You hit the nail on the head back in 2012 when you correctly diagnosed what was ailing your beloved GOP after some surprising election losses. But did anyone listen? Of course not!

Just to refresh our memories, here is what you said ten years ago when your party lost two winnable 2021 Senate races (Missouri, Indiana) after your candidates (Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock) made some really stupid comments about rape :

“We must stop being the stupid party. I’m serious. It’s time for a new Republican party that talks like adults. It’s time for us to articulate our plans and visions for America in real terms. We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. We’ve had enough of that.”

After having backed perhaps the worst, most unqualified candidate for the United States Senate in GOP history, Herschel Walker, this is what your National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman, Rick Scott, said recently:

“While Herschel came up short last night, I know he will continue to be a leader in our party for years to come.”

A smart party leader would never have said that!  A clear-headed politician, one in touch with reality, might have said that old Mitch McConnell was correct… Republicans need to focus more on candidate quality going forward … or, better yet, might have said nothing at all!

There undoubtedly is a GOP playbook somewhere which says “never admit error… just keep doubling down.” Bobby, I’m afraid yours is a party that hates admitting a mistake even more than having committed the mistake in the first place.

So, Bobby, what happened to you? You had such a promising political future!  You were young, diverse and sharp. Some were calling you the next best thing for the GOP. You won reelection for governor of Louisiana in 2011 by a landslide. And now you’re an advisor at some investment firm?

I’m guessing you eventually got tired of banging your head against the wall. You came to realize that while you can fix many things, you can’t fix stupid.

Still, Bobby, why haven’t you come out to say only a “stupid party” would even consider nominating a one-term, twice-impeached loser to run again for the presidency in 2024? Just asking.

Donald Trump … A RINO?

December 28, 2021 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

What’s going on with Donald Trump?

The man who not that long ago said he was unlikely to get his COVID-19 booster admitted, during an event in Dallas last week, that he indeed got his jab.

This did not sit well with some of the MAGA folks in attendance. In fact, a smattering of boos erupted after he told the event’s co-host, Bill O’Reilly, he got boosted.

Trump would later go on to laud the effectiveness of vaccines during an interview with The Daily Wires Candace Owens.

“Look, the results of the vaccine are very good, and if you do get (Covid), it’s a very minor form. People aren’t dying when they take the vaccine,” Trump said.

It didn’t take long from some factions of MAGA world to condemn Trump for going against one of the main tenets of hardcore Republicanism … vaccines bad!

Conspiracy theorist, Alex Jones, came out strongly against Trump’s new push for the efficacy of vaccines.

“This is an emergency Christmas Day warning to President Trump,” Jones said. “You are either completely ignorant about the so-called vaccine gene therapy that you helped ram through with Operation Warp Speed or you are one of the most evil men who ever lived, to push this toxic poison on the public and to attack your constituents when they simply try to save their lives and the lives of others.”

“Hell, we’re fighting Bill Gates and Fauci and Biden and the New World Order and Psaki and the Davos Group. And now we’ve got Trump on their team!” Jones added.

Some have suggested Trump’s touting the benefits of vaccines is all about helping his reelection bid. While he’s the clear favorite to win the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination, he needs to worry about the general election.

Even though Republicans are generally opposed to vaccine mandates, most are, themselves, at least partially vaccinated. A 65% majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents report having received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine, according to the most recent CNN polling.

Still, some have likened Trump’s recent public endorsement of Covid-19 vaccines and boosters to the “random foray of an unpredictable political figure.” (Rick Klein)

Then, of course, there is what some are calling the “Occam’s razor” answer to Trump’s new behavior … COVID-19 has significantly killed, and continues to kill, a disproportionate amount of the Republican base!

Is Trump turning into a Liz Cheney… who many Republicans call a RINO (Republican in name only)?

What’s next? Trump will admit that he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden fair and square? Will he condemn the January 6 Capitol mob as insurrectionists?

I don’t know but I do believe there is a Republican governor in Florida who isn’t too unhappy with the new anti-Trump rumblings going on in MAGA world (along with one in Texas, and one in South Dakota.)

Anti-Vaxxers Are Literally Dying To “Own The Libs”

August 25, 2021 By John DeProspo 8 Comments

Is there anything more enjoyable to Republicans than to “own the libs”? Oh, how they love to mock, infuriate or just get under the skin of those snooty liberals with their awesome, uncompromising conservatism!

To “own” someone is to dominate and humiliate them, and the “libs,” as described by Rolling Stone magazine, can loosely be defined as “anyone to the left of Sean Hannity.”

“Owning the libs” became a mantra of conservatism long before Trump came along. But since Trump’s ascension to the White House, to “own the libs” is less an identifiable act or set of policy goals than an ethos … a way of life; a civic religion, if you will.

Unfortunately for those who refuse to get vaccinated (predominantly Republicans of the red state variety), with the arrival of the coronavirus, “owning the libs” has taken a deadly turn.

I’m sure you’ve seen videos of those anti-vaxxers hooked up to respirators proudly claiming they do not regret not getting their vaccine shot. Heck it’s all about personal freedom, isn’t it, they tell you.

So now the “if liberals are for it, I’m against” line of thinking (I use the word loosely) has resulted in some Republicans actually accepting death over ever admitting they were wrong?

God help those poor, lost souls!

Interestingly, Urbandictionary.com defines “owning the libs” as: To inflict significant harm upon oneself, or significantly benefit the libs, out of a misguided attempt at spite.

Perhaps Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”

If Emerson were around in today’s Covid-19 world, he might have added, ”and it could kill you.”

The GOP Has Irredeemably Gone To POT

July 14, 2021 By John DeProspo 3 Comments

Funny, but there are still some pundits talking about the civil war within the Republican Party.

We read stories of how Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger (along with a few other so-called Republican “moderates”) are standing up for traditional conservative values against the Trump nihilists within their beloved party.

The truth is there is no longer a Republican Party. Whatever war there was is over. The GOP has become the POT (Party of Trump).

What’s that you say Mitt and Lisa … you are not members of the POT? You do not worship at the feet of the Orange Calf? You say now that Trump is no longer sitting in the White House his influence over your party will fade?

Please wake up and smell the insurrection. You cannot continue to call yourselves Republicans while remaining members of the POT.

You two sensible lawmakers need to immediately and dramatically renounce your party affiliation.

No, you do not have to go full Arlen Specter, the longtime Republican who switched to the Democratic Party in 2009 after saying he increasingly found himself “at odds with the Republican philosophy.”

All you have to do is declare as independents and caucus with the Democrats.

Surely you see what’s at stake?  Our very democracy is being threatened by an avalanche of voter suppression laws coming out of Republican-controlled states. You have been shown by our right-wing Supreme Court that it will not save the day.

But you can!

Your “Republican” colleagues are interested in only one thing … power. I honestly do not believe that applies to you. Show your fellow Americans, and the world, what true patriots you are by helping to pass federal voter protection legislation!

You will forever be revered for your acts of decency and bravery.  You will have separated yourselves from those POT asskissers who are hellbent on putting an end to our 250-year experiment with democracy.

As any good attorney would caution you … time is of the essence.

GOP’s Embrace Of Trump And “The Big Lie” Makes Perfect Sense

May 22, 2021 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

Politics can be a dirty business. For many officials, the number one priority once elected is to be re-elected, not policy or doing what’s best for the people who voted them in.  This especially holds true for today’s Republicans.

Following the January 6 insurrection, both Republican leaders, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, harshly condemned Donald Trump for his role in fomenting the violent attack on the Capitol. McConnell said Trump is “practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day, no question about it.” McCarthy joined in the condemnation by saying “The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.”

What both McConnell and McCarthy soon discovered after their very honest assessment of the situation was that such candor did not sit well with a very important group… their voting base!

So they did what any politician would do whose number one goal is to remain in power … they pulled a huey.

The calculus for today’s Republicans is very simple … do you embrace the truth and loss the support of your base, thereby surely being kicked out of office or do you embrace Trump and “The Big Lie” and have a chance at remaining in power? If your goal is to remain in office, a chance beats no chance every day.

So enough of this Republicans are too cowardly to stand up to Trump nonsense. They’ve made a political choice that makes the most sense at the moment … the country, the Constitution and our democracy be damned.

With a riled-up base and voter suppression tactics on steroids, along with electoral history being on their side, Republicans believe they have a good chance of retaking the House in 2022, making Kevin McCarthy Speaker of the House.

It is pathetic, and sad, that today’s Republicans believe hitching their fortunes to a twice impeached, pathological liar gives them their best chance of remaining in power rather than repudiating him and trying to deprogram their cultish base… but that is the dirty business of politics.

In a way, Republicans have simply chosen the “the lesser of two evils” when it comes to their best chance of remaining in power.

Personally, I think they are going to be losers no matter what. Republicans are really in an impossible situation. Yet we know the truth eventually wins out. So, putting all political calculations aside, for my money, it is better to go down as a patriot rather than as a traitor. But that’s just me!

After Cheney Ouster, House Reps Propose New Oath Of Office

May 12, 2021 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

Reprint from moronmajority.com

During colonial times, when the United States were colonies of Great Britain, officials swore allegiance to the king. Following the Revolution, the founders decided to require an oath for all federal and state officials … to the Constitution.

Since Liz Cheney’s ouster from her House leadership position due to her refusal to swear allegiance to the king of her party, a few House Republicans have proposed a new oath to be taken by all new members on the opening day of a new Congress.

A bill soon to be introduced by Texas Representative Louie Gohmert, co-sponsored by fellow Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan, contains the following oath:

“I, (name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend Donald J. Trump against all political enemies, foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to same; that I take this obligation without any mental hesitancy or self-reflection, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter as directed by Our Leader. So help me Trump.”

As Republican House members are in the minority, it is unlikely such a bill will pass. But it is interesting to note how American conservatives have gone full circle in just under 250 years!

What I Would Like To Hear From Joe During His First Address To Congress

April 25, 2021 By John DeProspo 3 Comments

Next Wednesday, April 28, Joe Biden will give, for all intents and purposes, his first State of the Union address. It is not officially called that since a president’s first address to a joint session of Congress is not considered a “State Of The Union.” The reasoning?  During a president’s first few months in office, he hasn’t been around long enough to get the lay of the land!

Jen Psaki, White House press secretary, has given us a preview of what the President will discuss:

“Certainly, you can expect that he will talk about all of the priorities and his commitment to building the economy back better, getting the pandemic under control, addressing the challenges we face around the world.”

That’s great, but I hope Biden addresses the 800-pound gorilla in the room as he speaks to Congress and the nation. Perhaps something like this:

On January 20th, I was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. I know some of you did not vote for me. But as I have said, I plan on being the president for all Americans. Look, folks, I know a good many of you do not believe the 2020 election was fair. That it was somehow rigged. That the other guy won. I understand why you think that way. But it is simply not true. There are some members in this very chamber who have fed you that lie and continue to do so. Many conservative news outlets have fed you that lie and continue to do so. Things have gotten so bad that many are referring to this whole situation as “The Big Lie.”

Folks, the 2020 election has been scrutinized six ways from Sunday and, for all that have looked into it, it’s the same conclusion … the election was fair and secure. Government officials, judges and elected leaders, mostly Republicans, have publicly acknowledged confidence in the election. In fact, William Barr, who many have said acted more like the former president’s personal lawyer instead of the lawyer for the United States, said he had “not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election.” Chris Krebs, the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said, “There was no indication or evidence that there was any evidence of hacking or compromise of election systems on, before, or after November 3.” He, like Barr, was appointed by the former president.

It is now six months after the election. We have seen what all the lying about election fraud has cost us … a violent attack on our nation’s Capitol. A country more divided than ever. This has got to stop and it has to stop now. There are just too many important things we need to do, right now, to help get us out of this pandemic and economic crisis.

I beg every Republican member of Congress to join me in moving forward with policies that will help the country thrive like never before. Put the political maneuvering and divisive politicking aside … put country over party … and let’s bring this country back, and together, again.

Yes, something along those lines would be great, don’t you think?

Maybe What Democrats Need Is A Mitch McConnell?

February 14, 2021 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

I can’t stand the guy. Yet, I’m in awe of his genius … his evil genius. Machiavelli has nothing on old Mitch McConnell.

There he was yesterday accusing Donald Trump of being guilty as sin just moments after voting to acquit him of what Liz Cheney called the greatest “betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.”

In a devastating takedown rivaling the closing arguments made by the House impeachment managers, McConnell tore into Trump for his “disgraceful dereliction of duty” saying, “There is no question — none — that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day.”

So how could McConnell not vote to convict Trump?

Here is where the evil mastermind’s cleverness comes in. Mitch voted to acquit Trump because he didn’t believe the Senate had the power to convict a president out of office. Of course, we all know that scenario came about only because McConnell refused to hold the Senate impeachment trial while Trump was still in office. Sheer brilliance!

McConnell knew that the only way his Republican colleagues could vote against convicting Trump was on technical grounds, no matter how phony, as the facts of the January 6 Capitol riot were never really in dispute. So, McConnell provided the cover … and 42 of his fellow Republican comrades, voting to give Trump a pass, wrapped themselves in the warm blanket of Mitch’s duplicity.

But McConnell’s speech after the Senate’s acquittal vote showed even more of his shrewdness.

It has been reported that McConnell wants Trump gone and out of the way. But he could not let his fellow Republicans do the job for fear of angering Trump’s loyal base.

“President Trump is still liable for everything he did while in office,” McConnell said. “He didn’t get away with anything yet. We have a criminal justice system in this country.”

There you have it. Let someone else (state attorneys general, the Justice Dept) do the dirty work!

While Trump might be the most corrupt president in U.S. history, can there be any doubt Mitch McConnell is among the more cunning, devious political leaders ever to hold public office?
