Trump’s Unrequited Love For The First Amendment

February 25, 2017 By John DeProspo 2 Comments

At this week’s annual meeting of the right-wing lovefest, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Donald Trump professed his profound love for the First Amendment.

“I love the First Amendment — nobody loves it more than me,” said the besotted commander in chief.

Unfortunately, the object of Trump’s affection does not love him back.

“How could he love me when he is so mean to me,” said the First Amendment. “If only his actions matched his words.”

The First Amendment has a valid point.

Soon after Trump’s proclamation of love for the much-cherished amendment, White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, barred reporters from numerous major media outlets from participating in a regularly scheduled press briefing. Singled out were: The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, CNN, BBC, The Huffington Post, Buzzfeed and Politico.

“And it’s not just freedom of the press that I’m all about,” said the First Amendment. “If he truly loved me, he’d love all of me. He hasn’t shown any of that.”

“What about my other guaranteed freedoms?” asked the sometimes misunderstood amendment. “Yes I stand for freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely. But I also forbid Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. And don’t forget, I assure the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government.”

“I’m not going to be taken in by Donald’s pretty words, his actions go against almost everything I stand for,” said the amendment so beloved by the Founding Fathers that they ranked it first among many. “ Others have claimed to love me but they proved to be bogus lovers. Donald is repulsive to me. Not only do I not love him but I’m afraid he will cause me harm.”

It is unfortunate the First Amendment is so frightened of the new president that it may need to seek a restraining order against the man and his false protestations of love.

Get Ready For A New Political Party – Trump’s White Party

June 16, 2016 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

heres-what-donald-trump-supporters-really-believe

After locking up the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, Trump promised, and GOP elites believed, he would act “more presidential.” He would now tone down the hateful rhetoric used to vanquish his 16 primary opponents. He would stop his brutal attacks against Hispanics, blacks and women. He would somehow unite the party.

The most powerful elected Republican, House Speaker Paul Ryan, bought the line, as did many powerful members of the donor class.

The new softer, gentler Trump never emerged, however. He has stuck to the same maliciousness used during the primary campaign.

In a new ABC News/ Washington Post poll, Trump’s previously high unfavorable ratings shot up to a new staggering level: 70% of Americans have an unfavorable view of the Republican nominee.

The poll, conducted June 8-12 among 1,000 adults, showed 77% of women held an unfavorable view of the purported “billionaire.”

Trump also had devastatingly high unfavorable ratings among African-Americans (94%) and Latinos (89%).

With numbers like those, Trump stands no chance of winning the presidency.

Why would Trump continue his divisive ways? Why wouldn’t he take the advice of his party’s elders and pivot into a more appealing general election candidate?

The answer is obvious. He does not want to be president. Or more preciously, he knows he cannot be elected president.

I believe what Trump is doing, now that he’s hijacked the Republican Party, is using it as a vehicle to lay the groundwork for a new political party he will head. The party will be made up of mostly white, angry, blue-collar voters. The White Nationalist Party might be a suitable name.

Trump is not adopting a more measured tone as the GOP presidential nominee because he does not want to alienate his ardent followers who will stick with him no matter what. They like their man just the way he is: irreverent, obnoxious, bigoted, politically incorrect and dictatorial.

It is hard to believe but the purported Republican presidential nominee has been able to seriously play Republicans for the suckers they are.

Bee Gees Foretold Trump’s Presidential Bid In Hit Single

June 15, 2016 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

 bee-gees-app-1343665702-hero-wide-0

          I started a joke which started the whole world crying

         But I didn’t see that the joke was on me – “I Started A Joke,” Bee Gees

For those of you old enough to remember, the Bee Gees had a hit single in 1968 entitled, “I Started A Joke.” The song is best known for its haunting melody and perplexing lyrics.

When Robin Gibb, the song’s lead vocalist, was asked to explain the meaning of the tune, he answered, “The listeners have to interpret it themselves, trying to explain it would detract from the song.”

I always felt the song was about unintended consequences. But lately I’ve come to realize, while partially right, the song was a musical forewarning of Donald Trump’s presidential bid.

No, Donald Trump did not start his bid to become the Republican Party’s presidential nominee as a joke (although some may disagree here). I believe Trump saw the presidential race as an inexpensive, surefire way to promote his brand. This view is actually confirmed by many former Trump campaign staffers who admit Trump just hoped for a good showing in the primary.

To almost every political analyst’s amazement, Trump’s racist, divisive, hate filled message resonated with the bulk of Republican voters. The Republican establishment, who never took Trump’s run seriously, is now looking at Donald J. Trump as their party’s presumptive presidential nominee.

But the joke isn’t only on the Grand Old Party; it is also on Trump himself.

Trump’s ego has so gotten the better of him that he is now doing the opposite of what got him into the presidential race in the first place. He is severely damaging the Trump name.

What Trump has worked so hard at doing, i.e. promoting the Trump brand to be synonymous with class, luxury, and glitz, has gone up in smoke in only a matter of months. The Trump name is now more associated with bigotry, stupidity and lack of sophistication.

Ego can get the better of us, sometimes; especially for a narcissistic con man like Trump.

The Bee Gees had another hit single much later in their career that also foretold of how Trump would con his way to the top of the Republican heap … “Jive Talkin”.

Trump v. Clinton … This Could Get Ugly

May 5, 2016 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Donald-Trump-And-Hillary-Clinton-1024x536

Barring some seismic shake-up within the Democratic Party, the 2016 presidential race will be a match between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

During the Republican primaries, Trump has displayed a knack for belittling his opponents by branding them with simple, derogatory nicknames. We got, “Low-energy” Jeb, “Little” Marco and “Lyin” Ted.

What put down will Trump come up with for Hillary? What nickname will he saddle her with? My money is on Trump going full misogynistic. He will attack Hillary’s looks. If I had to guess, Trump’s nickname for Clinton will be “Grandma” Hillary.

You can almost hear these insults being hurled at Hillary:

You know, folks, “Grandma” Hillary would be the second oldest president in our country’s history, just after Reagan. Do we want to see “Grandma” Hillary turn into Golda Meir right before our eyes?

Even in her prime, Hillary was never more than a 4.

With Hillary in the White House, it will be pantsuit city. Can you imagine her at formal state dinners? Nothing like how Melania will look as First Lady, I’ll tell you that!

I gotta tell you. I feel sorry for Bill. Guys you know what I mean..

Hardly a face for Mt. Rushmore, don’t you agree?

I have many friends who are plastic surgeons. They all say plastic surgery can only go so far.

Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president? (Fiorina reprise)

Of course none of this will help Trump with the female vote. But Trump just doesn’t care. As of now, his mysogynistic rants have not hurt him. They have actually helped him among his largest bloc of primary voters, under-educated males. This will not be the case in a general election, however.

I have no doubt Trump will play the “gender/looks” card. The man just won’t be able to help himself.

Trump supporters have already come out with one pretty offensive campaign button:

Yes, the battle between Trump and Clinton could get ugly… fast.

Trump – Confidence Man Done In By His Own Con

April 27, 2016 By John DeProspo 10 Comments

trump_golf

Donald Trump wants us to play a game. He pretends wanting to be president. We go along with the ruse.

After today’s string of primary victories in Delaware, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania, the sheeple are playing their part to a tee.

How do I know Trump is not serious about occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue? I listen to his words.

On October 6, 2015, Trump said this on Meet The Press when asked by Chuck Todd of the possibility he might leave the race, “Number one — I’m not a masochist. And if I was dropping in the polls where I thought I wasn’t gonna win, why would I continue? I’d go back to my business. I have no problem with that.” This clearest hint of an exit strategy, over six months ago, hasn’t exactly panned out for Trump.

During a rally in Maryland this past Sunday, Trump said if he loses the Republican nomination, people shouldn’t expect him to stick around in the public eye. “I don’t think I’m going to lose,” said Trump, “but if I do, I don’t think you’re ever going to see me again, folks. I think I’ll go to Turnberry and play golf or something.”

So much for the feared third party run!

I also know Trump does not want the toughest job in American by looking at his actions. A real contestant knows the rules of the game he is playing. He does not whine late in the competition that the rules are unfair. Surely a serious presidential candidate would know that securing his party’s nomination is not about votes but about delegates. Trump never had the organization to secure loyal delegates like his competitor, Ted Cruz.

There are only two possible outcomes for Trump. He either wins his party’s nomination – on a first ballot vote – by accumulating the needed 1237 delegates. Or the Republican convention becomes a free-for-all and someone other than Trump becomes the nominee. Of course, Trump could win after subsequent ballots, but that seems highly unlikely as many of his pledged delegates are not loyal to him … beyond a first ballot vote.

No matter which scenario it is, the Republican Party is damned.

With scenario number one, the Republican Party gets decimated in November, losing in a landside to the Democratic nominee, most likely Hillary Clinton. That likelihood could very well trigger the death of the GOP as we now know it. With scenario number two, the GOP is also doomed but the party might be able to survive. As for Trump, scenario two allows him to play the victim of the evil Republican establishment and still claim to be a winner.

My feeling is that Trump prefers scenario number two. Having the nomination “stolen” from him is exactly what he wants. Not only does the “in-over-his-head” Trump get to exit the race, but he can spend the rest of his life complaining that he was “robbed” of the nomination while secretly relishing his narrow escape.

Said writer Drew Magary, “Trump is always droning on and on about winning, but his obsession is merely with LOOKING like he’s a success and not actually BEING one. Winning is a branding exercise for him. If the Republican Party pries the nomination out of his stubby, cocktail-frank fingers, he can say that he technically “won,” and then slip out the Quicken Loans Arena fire escape in disgust, leaving a mob of angry voters and tattered party platforms behind him.”

Perhaps no one has said it better than Stephanie Cegielski, communications director for the now defunct pro-Trump Make America Great Again PAC. “I don’t think even Trump thought he would get this far. And I don’t even know that he wanted to, which is perhaps the scariest prospect of all.”

Cegielski continued. “He certainly was never prepared or equipped to go all the way to the White House, but his ego has now taken over the driver’s seat, and nothing else matters. The Donald does not fail. The Donald does not have any weakness. The Donald is his own biggest enemy.”

It is way too late for Trump to drop out of the race. He has come too far and built up an insanely loyal following. There is nothing to be done but play out the hand. If he were to try to “chicken out,” his fanatic followers would have his scalp … no pun intended.

Pity poor Donald! All he ever wanted was a respectable showing as a presidential candidate. Running for the Republican nomination must have seemed like the ultimate way to promote his brand on the cheap. And now this?

The consummate con man done in by his own con. How rich!

Come On Progressives … In Your Heart You Know She’s Right

March 18, 2016 By John DeProspo 4 Comments

Hillary Clinton at senate hearing

Progressive Democrats love Bernie Sanders in just about the same measure as they despise Hillary Clinton. For many, it’s “Bernie or Bust.” A good number of these so-called Democrats say they would just as soon stay home on Election Day, or vote for Donald Trump, than support the former Secretary of State. Their enmity for Clinton is that great.

There is no doubt Progressives are an emotional bunch. But the odds are great that, in time, passions will wane and cooler heads will prevail.

Progressives should be asking themselves one simple question: “Which candidate, Bernie or Hillary, would be more effective in dealing with the obstructionist Republicans in Congress?” The answer undoubtedly is Hillary Clinton.

Hillary knows how to play dirty, Bernie does not. The former First Lady has a good deal of experience in political hardball. She and Bill have a certain way of getting things done; of making sure they get their way.

Many long-time members of Congress remember the Bill Clinton presidency. They also remember the story of Vince Foster.

Vince Foster committed “suicide” July 20, 1993. In the spring and early summer of that year, the Clinton “Travelgate” scandal  erupted. It was one of a series of problems Foster was confronting – not only in his role as deputy White House counsel but – as in the case of “Whitewater” – in his role as personal lawyer for the Clintons.

Many Republican conspiracists do not believe Foster committed suicide but was rubbed out, done in, bumped off, sent to his maker at the direction of the Clintons. The man just knew too much.

With that thought in mind, do you think our august senators and congressman might be a little fearful of crossing Hillary and Bill? They know if they do not play ball with the Clintons, there is a good chance they may be “Fostered.”

Of course this is just my own little half-baked theory. But you get the idea: the Clintons play to win. They can be as cunning and Machiavellian as Republicans. Rumor has it the “b” word is sometimes used to describe Hillary. Bernie is just a kind soul.

As great as Bernie’s policies may be (universal healthcare, free college, etc.), does anyone honesty think those initiatives would be given an iota of consideration by congressional Republicans? No, they would treat old Bernie just as they have treated our President – with complete disrespect, and a lack of fear.

That will not be the case with the Clintons back in the White House. No sir, none of those old-time Congressmen will want to risk being “Fostered” with Hillary at the helm.

“Dumbing Down” Of America Most Evident In Our Politics

January 22, 2016 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

Below is an article that appeared in Psychology Today on July 7, 2014. It is written by Ray Williams, Wired For Success.

Anti-Intellectualism and the “Dumbing Down” of America

There is a growing and disturbing trend of anti-intellectual elitism in American culture. It’s the dismissal of science, the arts, and humanities and their replacement by entertainment, self-righteousness, ignorance, and deliberate gullibility.

Susan Jacoby, author of The Age of American Unreason, says in an article in the Washington Post, “Dumbness, to paraphrase the late senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, has been steadily defined downward for several decades, by a combination of heretofore irresistible forces. These include the triumph of video culture over print culture; a disjunction between Americans’ rising level of formal education and their shaky grasp of basic geography, science and history; and the fusion of anti-rationalism with anti-intellectualism.”

There has been a long tradition of anti-intellectualism in America, unlike most other Western countries. Richard Hofstadter, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1964 for his book, Anti-Intellectualism In American Life, describes how the vast underlying foundations of anti-elite, anti-reason and anti-science have been infused into America’s political and social fabric. Famous science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once said: “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

Mark Bauerlein, in his book, The Dumbest Generation, reveals how a whole generation of youth is being dumbed down by their aversion to reading anything of substance and their addiction to digital “crap” via social media.

Journalist Charles Pierce, author of Idiot America, adds another perspective: “The rise of idiot America today represents–for profit mainly, but also and more cynically, for political advantage in the pursuit of power–the breakdown of a consensus that the pursuit of knowledge is a good. It also represents the ascendancy of the notion that the people whom we should trust the least are the people who best know what they are talking about. In the new media age, everybody is an expert.”

“There’s a pervasive suspicion of rights, privileges, knowledge and specialization,” says Catherine Liu, the author of American Idyll: Academic Antielitism as Cultural Critique  and a film and media studies professor at University of California. The very mission of universities has changed, argues Liu. “We don’t educate people anymore. We train them to get jobs.”

Part of the reason for the rising anti-intellectualism can be found in the declining state of education in the U.S. compared to other advanced countries:

*After leading the world for decades in 25-34 year olds with university degrees, the U.S. is now in 12th place. The World Economic Forum ranked the U.S. at 52nd among 139 nations in the quality of its university math and science instruction in 2010. Nearly 50% of all graduate students in the sciences in the U.S. are foreigners, most of whom are returning to their home countries;
*The Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs commissioned a civic education poll among public school students. A surprising 77% didn’t know that George Washington was the first President; couldn’t name Thomas Jefferson as the author of the Declaration of Independence; and only 2.8% of the students actually passed the citizenship test. Along similar lines, the Goldwater Institute of Phoenix did the same survey and only 3.5% of students passed the civics test;
*According to the National Research Council report, only 28% of high school science teachers consistently follow the National Research Council guidelines on teaching evolution, and 13% of those teachers explicitly advocate creationism or “intelligent design;”
*18% of Americans still believe that the sun revolves around the earth, according to a Gallup poll;
*The American Association of State Colleges and Universities report on education shows that the U.S. ranks second among all nations in the proportion of the population aged 35-64 with a college degree, but 19th in the percentage of those aged 25-34 with an associate or high school diploma, which means that for the first time, the educational attainment of young people will be lower than their parents;
*74% of Republicans in the U.S. Senate and 53% in the House of Representatives deny the validity of climate change despite the findings of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and every other significant scientific organization in the world;
*According to the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress, 68% of public school children in the U.S. do not read proficiently by the time they finish third grade. And the U.S. News & World reported that barely 50% of students are ready for college level reading when they graduate;
*According to a 2006 survey by National Geographic-Roper, nearly half of Americans between ages 18 and 24 do not think it necessary to know the location of other countries in which important news is being made. More than a third consider it “not at all important” to know a foreign language, and only 14 percent consider it “very important;”
*According to the National Endowment for the Arts report in 1982, 82% of college graduates read novels or poems for pleasure; two decades later only 67% did. And more than 40% of Americans under 44 did not read a single book–fiction or nonfiction–over the course of a year. The proportion of 17 year olds who read nothing (unless required by school ) has doubled between 1984-2004;
*Gallup released a poll indicating 42 percent of Americans still believe God created human beings in their present form less than 10,000 years ago;
*A 2008 University of Texas study found that 25 percent of public school biology teachers believe that humans and dinosaurs inhabited the earth simultaneously.

In American schools, the culture exalts the athlete and good-looking cheerleader. Well-educated and intellectual students are commonly referred to in public schools and the media as “nerds,” “dweebs,” “dorks,” and “geeks,” and are relentlessly harassed and even assaulted by the more popular “jocks” for openly displaying any intellect. These anti-intellectual attitudes are not reflected in students in most European or Asian countries, whose educational levels have now equaled and and will surpass that of the U.S. And most TV shows or movies such as The Big Bang Theory depict intellectuals as being geeks if not effeminate.

John W. Traphagan,Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Texas, argues the problem is that Asian countries have core cultural values that are more akin to a cult of intelligence and education than a cult of ignorance and anti-intellectualism. In Japan, for example, teachers are held in high esteem and normally viewed as among the most important members of a community. There is suspicion and even disdain for the work of teachers that occurs in the U.S. Teachers in Japan typically are paid significantly more than their peers in the U.S. The profession of teaching is one that is seen as being of central value in Japanese society and those who choose that profession are well compensated in terms of salary, pension, and respect for their knowledge and their efforts on behalf of children.

In addition, we do not see in Japan significant numbers of the types of religious schools that are designed to shield children from knowledge about basic tenets of science and accepted understandings of history–such as evolutionary theory or the religious views of the Founding Fathers, who were largely deists–which are essential to having a fundamental understanding of the world, Traphagan contends. The reason for this is because in general Japanese value education, value the work of intellectuals, and see a well-educated public with a basic common knowledge in areas of scientific fact, math, history, literature, etc. as being an essential foundation to a successful democracy.

We’re creating a world of dummies. Angry dummies who feel they have the right, the authority and the need not only to comment on everything, but to make sure their voice is heard above the rest, and to drag down any opposing views through personal attacks, loud repetition and confrontation.

Bill Keller, writing in the New York Times argues that the anti-intellectual elitism is not an elitism of wisdom, education, experience or knowledge. The new elite are the angry social media posters, those who can shout loudest and more often, a clique of bullies and malcontents baying together like dogs cornering a fox. Too often it’s a combined elite of the anti-intellectuals and the conspiracy followers – not those who can voice the most cogent, most coherent response. Together they forment a rabid culture of anti-rationalism where every fact is suspect; every shadow holds a secret conspiracy. Rational thought is the enemy. Critical thinking is the devil’s tool.

Keller also notes that the herd mentality takes over online; the anti-intellectuals become the metaphorical equivalent of an angry lynch mob when anyone either challenges one of the mob beliefs or posts anything outside the mob’s self-limiting set of values.

Keller blames this in part to the online universe that “skews young, educated and attentive to fashions.” Fashion, entertainment, spectacle, voyeurism – we’re directed towards trivia, towards the inconsequential, towards unquestioning and blatant consumerism. This results in intellectual complacency. People accept without questioning, believe without weighing the choices, join the pack because in a culture where convenience rules, real individualism is too hard work. Thinking takes too much time: it gets in the way of the immediacy of the online experience.

Reality TV and pop culture presented in magazines and online sites claim to provide useful information about the importance of The Housewives of [you name the city] that can somehow enrich our lives. After all, how else can one explain the insipid and pointless stories that tout divorces, cheating and weight gain? How else can we explain how the Kardashians,or Paris Hilton are known for being famous for being famous without actually contributing anything worth discussion? The artificial events of their lives become the mainstay of populist media to distract people from the real issues and concerns facing us.

The current trend of increasing anti-intellectualism now establishing itself in politics and business leadership, and supported by a declining education system should be a cause for concern for leaders and the general population,one that needs to be addressed now.

Sorry Sir, But On This One, You’re Dead Wrong

January 13, 2016 By John DeProspo 6 Comments

US President Barack Obama speaks during a campaign event at the Apollo Theatre in New York on 19 January 2012.

In his final State of the Union address last night, President Obama revealed “one of the few regrets” of his time in office.

Having made healing the divisions in Washington a major campaign theme in 2008, the President told the joint session of Congress, “It’s one of the few regrets of my presidency  that the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better. There’s no doubt a president with the gifts of Lincoln or Roosevelt might have better bridged the divide, and I guarantee I’ll keep trying to be better so long as I hold this office.”

Sorry, Sir, but you are being a bit too hard on yourself. There is no other president I can recall who entered office with the deck so stacked against him. Yes the rancor and vitriol in Washington has gotten much worse since you entered the White House but it is not for your lack of trying. It is simply due to the fact that you are you.

On the same day you were sworn into office, the Republican leader of the Senate, Mitch McConnell, bragged about how making your failure would be the Republicans’ primary goal … not creating jobs, or fixing the economy. Said the Minority Leader, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

The blowhard king of conservative talk radio, Rush Limbaugh, speaking of your presidency, told his audience, “I hope he fails.” Of course this helped stir hatred against you from the get go. It didn’t matter that what the faux patriot was saying, in effect,, was that he hoped America failed.

Then you had the official propaganda machine for the Republican Party, Fox News, joining in the battle to portray you as an enemy; an outsider; a loser. Any policy initiative you proposed, they were against… even if Republicans themselves, at one time, had pushed for the same policy proposal. It didn’t matter; if you were for it, Fox and company was against it. It is beyond ironic that the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) was a Republican creation!

You had to endure, and still are, the whole “birther” movement against you. You were not eligible to be our president, said the “birthers,” because you were not “one of us.” You were a Kenyan Muslim secretively trying to undermine our great country. It is now more than clear that the whole “birther” nonsense was nothing but a racist reaction to your status as the first African American president of the United States.

No Sir, you need not regret nor blame yourself for the increased animosity in Washington. You had no chance. I dare say not even a Lincoln or FDR could have done better or handled the situation with any more of the calm or grace you’ve exhibited.(The Amazing Grace Of Barack Obama)

You are truly an amazing man. In spite of all the roadblocks, all the hatred, all the malice, you have been able to accomplish so many things for the American people; great things that the visceral hatred of so many will not allow them to see.

Sir, it takes two to tango and your partner (Republicans) refused to dance from the moment the music started playing.

Enjoy your final year in office, Sir. We look forward to many more great things from you.
